I set it on my dirtbike and it got stolen at track practice, I found it parked in a guys garage and showed the cops the title I have

Good test results. As a radio engineer I can explain some of your results. Placing the tracker ‘plastic side down’ on the metal tank would be the worst possible scenario which is confirmed by your range test results. The plastic top radiates the most signal whereas the metal battery cover should produce a ‘dead’ area so placing the plastic ‘radiation’ side onto the metal tank would significantly distort the trackers radiation pattern and detune the trackers antennae resulting in your poor signal result. Placing the plastic-side up on the tank or plastic-side up on the seat or the cowl away from any metal would have provided a better result. So far I haven’t read anything that recommends a preferred orientation for permanent mounting so most people wouldn’t be aware of this important point. As for the side-mounting test, your results also confirm the plastic side provides the best radiation. When you taped the tag to the side covers you had the metal side against the cover. This produced the lowest radiation on that side of the bike and significantly better radiation ‘through’ the bike into the opposite direction. You didn’t mention the results of your rear seat mounting but taping the tag with the plastic side facing upwards should have produced a better result to facing it downwards.

Great video, I feel like with over a billion iPhones out there that the stolen bike has a very good chance of being near an iPhone to ping a location. Most crooks aren’t intelligent either so they could very well be riding with their own iPhone or go to a buddies and never know they are broadcasting their own location. For 30 bucks? I say it’s worth it

25 bucks. I bought 4 of them for 99. Think I'll toss one on the bike somewhere, maybe not just in the tail because that's going to be obvious when they're tearing it apart. Dangle it off a cable behind a fairing, maybe.

I have 5 airtags not. Bike keys seem to disappear with greater ease than car keys or even corn chips in a house full of teenage boys. Oddly, once I did hang an airtag on my fob, I haven’t been able to lose the keys, even on purpose. I also put one in my backpack and one on my bike. It’s great for finding my bike in a crowded parking lot, if nothing else.

I lost my bike keys for a week in my house and started losing my mind. Did I drop them outside? Did the landscapers find them? Oh shit, do racoons like keys? They fell into an area of my couch I didn't know was there, between the back and the wood base that holds the cushions. I found them after my remote fell between the cushions and I had some inspiration (had already removed the cushions). Got an Airtag on the bike key now. Confirmed I can hear the ping if it falls in there 😂

So I use the samsung equivalent of an airtag in my bike, one thing you missed on, iphones will actually alert you if an airtag thats not yours is near you for a while(to stop people from using them for people stealing) so if the thief has an iphone yes youll get solid updates on your tracking, but eventually mr thief is gonna know that the airtag is on the bike

Super helpful. I keep putting off getting one. It’s a bummer you need to kinda put it where it’s visible for your phone to connect to it, because then it means more likely to be found and then removed. Either way, this is kinda what I expected. Cheap and not super reliable. Ultimately, tho, wouldn’t it still be useful no matter where you are? Even if you live in the country, as long as the thief or someone in his group (let’s say he stashed the bike with a friend(s), has an iPhone, they just have to be near it, right? I think the lack of fast/reliable real time tracking isn’t so bad. Even if the thief has a 10 minute head start, once they arrive at the destination, that’s all you need, anyway. I think if you can hide it well enough, it might be a solid alternative. Even if you have an expensive anti-theft system, a thief will know where to look for it and disable it. The airtag may not be as powerful, but you can almost hide it anywhere.

I think that as common as iPhone are, people who steal bikes to make money are less likely to be people who spend the money on one, and more commonly have shitty flip phones. I think it’s a bit closer to a dice roll than a coin flip. Whether it’s a D4 or a D20 I couldn’t say.

@@SquidTipsthat’s true. However since apple releases a new iPhone every year they’ve almost become disposable. Most phone companies just basically straight up give you an iPhone. I think they just charge you an extra $20-$30 a month if you want the newer model. So it’s within the realm of possibilities that a bike thief could have an iPhone. Or people in his crew or whatever. Also, I’m looking at the friends and family factor. Maybe the guy who stole your bike is a scumbag with a cheap flip phone. But if he takes it home and a neighbor or family member/friend is close enough, it’ll ping their phone and alert you, right? My understanding is if the airtag is in a remote location, someone with an iPhone just has to walk near it and it’ll connect to their phone which puts the airtag on the grid again. I suppose a real in-depth test would be have a buddy try to actually “steal” the bike and take it to a location and hide it for a day or so. The idea is the bike is still likely to be recovered and intact, unless they were taking it straight to some chop shop and it’s immediately scrapped. I figure a thief would steal the bike and stash it somewhere for a long enough time that it’s still recoverable. Which means the airtag isn’t so great for immediately finding your bike in real time, when it’s most crucial. But it might be useful at finding it once the thief comes to a stop somewhere. Assuming someone nearby has an iPhone.

I didn't mention this in the review, but the AirTag will start to make sounds after a period of time near an iPhone that is not synced to the iCloud account that it is registered to. I unintentionally tested this because I left the AirTag sync'd to Tysons account when I took it home and forgot about it until it started beeping on my desk. It adds to the ticking-clock aspect of motorcycle theft, which is that your odds of recovery diminish significantly over time. The iPhone connection variability is why we both ultimately agreed that in denser areas an AirTag would be way more reliable as a Theft-Recovery tool, and outside of that probobly a lot less reliable.

@@SquidTips that’s a good point. I read it does it after like 3 days? I wonder if, for people like myself who don’t ride every day, it would constantly be going off if it’s stored far enough away that your phone doesn’t ping it. In winter months, I might have it stored for a month. I guess you could just.. take the airtag with you.
