Pretty much, a Black person from say London won't be used to climbing or hiking. So if they're not used to it, why bother doing it. In fact this isn't even a Black person issue, I'd say most urbanites won't be able to do it. Hiking and camping is difficult. It is different world compared to city life. No need to print anything off the internet with some QR code etc. It couldn’t be easier and although not a national park I was in a nature reserve a few months ago and once you got away from the M40 it was lovely and the parking relied on an honesty system, the way it should be. I have walked in Dartmoor, Exmoor, Lake District, New Forest etc. When I was in the North York Moors National Park I got asked where I was from a number of times probably as it’s so far away from me which was fine by me. It’s the same when I am on a local walk and meet people far away from the north etc just down for a few days. I have even met people from overseas on walking holidays and amazed me that not everywhere has such free access as the UK does where you can can walk from Lands End to John o’ Groats and coast to coast.

I was recently walking in the beacons and met a solo walker at the summit of Fan y Big, he was attempting to photograph himself on the pinnacle, with Pen y Fan in the background. Not easy on a windy summit. I offered to take a few photos, with his phone, for him to which he was grateful. I could tell at once that he wasn't a local man, not Welsh and not even British. I was interested to know where he originated from, where his accent was from and, despite the best efforts of some in our society now to frustrate such enquiry, I am determined to ask the land mine question "where are you from?". His reply was "well, currently Swansea, but originally Poland". We then engaged in a conversation about what had brought him to Wales and his keenness for walking in the hills and how lucky we both were to have such beautiful areas to freely explore. We wished each other well on the rest of our walks that day and I left him drinking his coffee and taking in the windswept views. Hopefully my photography was up to standard. I am determined to continue to do this as I am always interested in where people come from and how they have come to be in my little corner of the world. One thing I would say about the mountains of Wales and the wider UK, however, is that at no point have I feared being stabbed or shot to death in them and to that end, I'm happy to have less town and city dwellers forced in to them, against their will, thank you very much.

Honestly it was a dreadful sight to see it was like something out of the Ganges this beautiful nature spot will undoubtedly be destroyed sooner or later. The park / country keepers dont do a thing about it . But then a bunch of white kids with a bottle of gin and mixer turned up being rowdy and drinking - rightly so they needed to be told its a family spot - the park/ land keeper went straight to them and told them to move on or he’d call the police . As he walked past me I asked him if he could tell those families to stop using the disposable barbecues which are actually illegal- he just frowned , raised an eye brow and moved on.

My wife has abandoned a walk she has done for twenty years because of the appearance of colourful men on the route. And before someone says anything, I just happened to come across an end of year news item about who were jailed in my county for 2022. The mug shots of the rapists and drug dealers (90% of those jailed) were 70% colourful with un-pronounceable names. I walk with her on the same route and there are some very odd characters. The exact same "problem" apparently exists here in the United States. Several years ago there were some articles written about the lack of black people visiting places like Yellowstone or Grand Teton National Park, both of which are mostly in Wyoming. I saw some evidence for a possible explanation when I was in visiting the South about a dozen years ago. We had been walking along a river bank when some younger members of our family saw a small snake swimming close to the bank, and fished it out of the water with a stick of some sort. They knew is wasn't poisonous, so there was no concern, but a black woman who was nearby started screaming at the sight of a snake being handled by people. She was terrified. "How can you stand to do that?" she asked the kids. For most white people, wildlife is fascinating. For many black people, wildlife is terrifying. Is there a law that says black people and white people have to be alike in every way?

Similar thing for Yosemite National Park in California. Black people are 13% of California's population but only 2% of the park's visitors. It was pointed out that no one is stopping black people from visiting Yosemite, and that it's a NATIONAL park that attracts people from all over the country (and the world--one meets many Europeans and Asians there). But of course there had to be a diversity commission to find out why so few black people visited Yosemite. It turns out the answer was that most black folks prefer to spend money being pampered on a holiday (nice hotel room, fancy restaurants, etc) rather than roughing it in the great outdoors. But of course the "official" reason black people have this preference is because so many white people at Yosemite make them feel uncomfortable just by being so numerous--sounds as if black people need to get past their racist attitudes towards whites and enjoy the natural splendor of California. I don't know what black people think we're going to do to them. Microaggressions aplenty, perhaps? As an aside, if any of you are traveling to the US and truly enjoy natural beauty, I highly recommend Yosemite National Park. You will not regret visiting and you'll always remember it. The US doesn't have the history, art, and architecture of the Old World, but we compensate with some jaw-dropping natural beauty that is well-preserved thanks to the foresight of men like Teddy Roosevelt (yes, a heterosexual dead white male, and therefore the devil). Cheers.

I cannot remember when I last saw a black person up a mountain, even on Snowdon's peak where you have the option of taking the train to the summit as the majority do. Over the summer there is often a queue to get to the summit cairn from the top station. To even push this is surely a manifestation of despicable 'white cultural imperialism'?

We have seen videos by Simon on this topic before and he speaks logically, as always. In fairness, I believe these organisations (National Trust, museums, holiday and theme parks, open spaces, etc.), are trying to put across the message that these locations are open to anyone and there is no restriction or bias in their offering. I do think it is conveyed in a rather ham-fisted way, but as we live in the time we live, everyone has come to take care with the words they choose and the message is always (again, due to the vagaries of our time), laced with "correct speak". Simply put - and as Simon correctly points out - there is absolutely nothing preventing anyone of any colour or race, enjoying what this country has to offer in terms of leisure, relaxation, pastime or hobby. It is just that different people and cultures have different preferences. Once again, we have a phrase to cover that: "you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink". My feeling is that many indigenous ("white") people in the UK become irritated when the messages and publicity is prhased in such a way as to make it look as if some kind of "gate-keeping" operation is being carried out to deny black* people the opportunity of this or that..... (Note: *I wrote 'black' because we rarely hear of complaints from other minority communities, or more accurately, those who lament on their behalf).

I’ve never had this problem myself. I have entered community centres, Somali cafes and other ‘minority ethnic group spaces’ here in Bristol and have not once been met with violence - quite the opposite in fact. Kindness and warmth. I’m not here to start fights in the comment section. Just wanted to share my experience. I’ve never felt afraid or concerned by any of this.

I think it’s because it’s an alien environment, due to the fact that not many black people live around there. The underlying question is, why do ethnic minorities always seem to gravitate towards towns and cities, particularly the densely populated ones, and avoid rural areas? It’s all about the desire to associate with people you identify with. As the urban areas are already home to sizeable multi ethnic populations, it creates a self perpetuating “pull” factor for others who arrive, or who are born there and choose to stay, especially close to family etc. This has never taken hold in rural areas, which are by their nature less populous anyway, because rural communities tend to be relatively static over generations. Farming often forms the core of economic activity, and farms are usually held by multiple generations of the same family which is mirrored to some extent by the wider community. New arrivals into small rural communities are very noticeable, and become the topic of conversation and conjecture, which can make some people feel self conscious. This would be further accentuated if your appearance as well as your accent and lifestyle was also markedly different. These communities are not accustomed to sudden changes. Where I live in rural Herefordshire, you are not considered a local unless your family has been here for at least 3 generations. Ours arrived 36 years ago from Cheshire (not exactly the other side of the universe) and yet my young daughter is the first of us who would be considered truly local!

The appeal of British cities to emigrate to for Africans and Asians is because everything is all there, ready made and built, waiting for them. Small flats, schools, hospitals, shops, and welfare to make it all free. Conversely, there was nothing for European pioneers in America, Australia and parts of Africa/Asia.

@dicksmall7976 True. It is hard work. This is why when I see people saying how these same Asians and Africans will overrun Europe. I just don't buy it. In my hometown, any African here would struggle because of the climate. They'd quite literally get sick. They wouldn't be used to the temperature.

When I was teacher training in Battersea, the first time I had encountered black children, I was told none of them had ever seen a cow in a field and that their parents rarely moved away from the tower blocks they lived in which was a tight knit community where they felt safe. That was in the very early 1970s. Not much has changed then. Going on holiday to Bermuda, a tiny island in the Atlantic, I got talking to a black guy who was descended from slaves and was astonished to discover that he had no interest in exploring the rest of the island (22 miles by I mile at its widest) and had stayed in his village for the entirety of his 73 years.

I live in Battersea. The incredible thing is the area had many new tower blocks built in the 60s and 70s as older housing was demolished but those that were displaced were the white residents that had lived in the area for generations. Almost all the new housing was given to black people who had been here for a short time, but had plenty of children. Now most of it goes to Muslims.

A few years ago I worked in an office in Bristol with a mix of mostly white and some black colleagues. Everyone got on. One day one of the black office workers was going on a business trip to Brecon. Another of the black colleagues joked, 'say, hi to all the black people while you're there.' Nobody said anything. I understand it was meant as a light-hearted joke. However, if she had been going to Brixton for the day and I as a white person said, 'say, hi to all the white people while you're there.' that wouldn't have gone unnoticed.

A friend of mine was brought up on a remote farm in west ireland. As a child, she and her b& s had to walk 3 miles each way to school. Her family ( in the 1950s ) were too poor to own a vehicle, so the only transport was a pony trap. Which meant the children had to use ‘shanks’ pony’ to visit the local village ( the real pony being reserved for necessary trips). As a result, as an adult, she wouldn’t walk ANYWHERE. She regarded it as a backward step to the life of poverty she left behind.

My classmates wanted to touch my hair all the time and would tell me I was adopted because my mum was white. My mother also faced terrible exclusion. People slammed doors in her face and spat at her. Funnily enough, it's the same with tabletop wargaming(both sci/fi as well as more serious historical). I have collected, assembled, painted and played with metal and plastic miniatures for 35+ years and go to competitions and events all around the country. I can count on one hand the collective amount of black people who I have seen attend these over the years. The figure is slightly higher but not much for asians. I find this remarkable. I can understand if a convention was held in Wales due to population demographs, but plenty of others I have been to were situated in the Midlands or London.

Years ago in the UK, when in the Scouts, and sat close to the top of some mountain or other eating the obligatory Kendal Mint Cake, we noted an oriental feller in combat uniform running rapidly up one side, and then somewhat faster down the other. Someone remarked that we don't see that every day. Then, almost exactly a minute later, another one appeared, and then one every minute or so. We gave up counting. They seemed fit and handy looking chaps. We later worked out they were Gurkhas, on a training exercise. So, plenty of Gurkhas then, no idea about the b1ack fellers, never saw any of them, ever.

I was sure black people were not banned from celebrating the Queens Platinum Jubilee , yet as a Londoner who attended over the days, you had more black faces in the parades than you did in the crowds. Same went for QE2 on the state funeral. The TV news showed more black people being interviewed than you could actually count in the main crowds.....And anyone thinking I am just being a dick, needs only to check the footage on both occasions. I still remember my Uncles outlook on what he thought of certain people when he lost his home in Rhodesia and came to live with us....."
