+1 for bike computers, they're designed for the job, they usually come with pretty robust mounts, they don't usually go smash when they hit the floor, I don't even care about colour screens or touch screens.

If you are just recording your ride a watch is fine, however, if you want to do training (pyramids, sprints, endurance), where keeping a cadence, power, or hr is needed, or you want to navigate with gps, a bike computer (or a watch on the handlebars) is a must. Even an Edge 130 will work perfectly. If you are putting your watch on the bars, don't forget to get a hr monitor (with most watches you can broadcast their hr reading to your bike computer, but for training a hr monitor is recommended always, because it's more accurate with quick changes in hr than an optical sensor on a watch).

On paper CFRP forks are great; saving mass and damping high-frequency vibrations. In practice the quiet but steady trickle of reports about catastrophic failure of these parts and the often dire consequences that result, along with the material's additional complexity of manufacture, difficulty of inspection and relative unpredictability make me very wary to the point where I now only ride steel. It's a fantastic material in the correct application and with an appropriate inspection regime... less-so in entirely uncontrolled, safety-critical consumer goods IMO. PS - congratulations Francis on your new haircut - makes you look really different 👍

He's joking about "riding really fast" but most people ride faster than a walking pace. Falling down at anything faster than a walking pace is pretty damaging. My rides I tend to average around 15mph (25kph) and coming off at that speed would probably put me off riding for a while.

Tend to think carbon forks and/or bikes are overrated. Maybe for racing they're not but I don't race, and the ride quality & performance of my more budgety alu bike/alu fork is comparable to my higher end carbon endurance and steel road bikes. I think the wheels & tires, and drive trains make the biggest difference.

Just from personal experience with two alloy bikes, one with carbon forks and carbon seatpost, one with alloy forks and seatpost. Noticeable difference running 28's with tubes, no difference running 32's tubeless (at roughly 28 psi less pressure). Are Carbon Forks on Alloy Bikes worth it? It depends...

Disagree with the watch/computer question for a different reason. Watch as bike computer, and then do mirror it to your phone on the handlebars. That way you’re collecting all your fitness data all the time, including cycling, and can monitor on data driven rides, or go natural for enjoyment.

I get the same anxiety riding a carbon fork. I get paranoid that it's just going to explode while I am going fast. I love the feel and weight, but it's hard to get past the anxiety. I have had a cromo (or regular steel, not sure) fork fail while riding, it just bent where the curve was after a curb jump. Didn't completely break, and I was able to safely stop.
