We decided to answer the question: Are Cheap Coilovers Worth it?!
After a few months of driving the Supra around with a complete no-sus (no suspension) setup for maximum low on the cheap, we decided the logical next step would be to install more of the parts from the Rudeboy Specials catalogue.
As we've mentioned on the channel before, Rudeboy's parts are the perfect solution to most issues you will encounter when building an old, low-style, Toyota. His engine risers, which were installed in the car before Summer Touring, have saved the oil pan on this 5M countless times already.
The plan was to use more parts from his catalogue to start improving the overall driving quality and offer greater peace of mind, for the Supra. The first step was to install the differential riser kit. This kit was made to get the diff out of the way of any future impacts with the ground, as well as to straighten out the CV angles, especially now that the car is sitting so much lower than stock.
The last piece of the puzzle was to use the Rudeboy Prosus coilover adapter, which allows you to run an S13/S14 coilover in a wide variety of older Toyotas (and even some Datsuns). Once the plan was set, we needed to find ourselves a pair of S13 front coilovers. Luckily enough, it just so happened that a representative from Maxpeedingrods reached out to us on IG and offered us a brand collaboration.
We went back and forth on this offer a handful of times because we know that Maxpeedingrods is a low-cost provider for suspension solutions; we wanted to make sure that we were not sacrificing quality where it mattered. After some conversations with other vintage Toyota owners who were running Rudeboy's Prosus kit with Maxpeedingrods S13 coilovers, we decided that there was no way that this was going to ride worse than the no-sus setup. We also figured that a huge part of building a Kaido Racer is employing the resources that you have available to you and that, if things went well with the Maxpeeding rods, we would be able to provide you with a low-cost coilover that you could get brand-new to pair with your Rudeboy Specials Prosus kit.
The installation went smoothly and everything went together with precision. Once on the road for a test, we immediately realized that the ride quality of the Supra had improved substantially. Bumps that would have sent the car bouncing down the road or flying up into the air were no longer unmanageable, the car cornered with stability and precision.
We would not recommend these coilovers to somebody who is building a performance-orientated car, but for a Kaido Racer where the main objective is to be as low to the ground as possible, the combination of the Maxpeedingrods and the Rudeboy Prosus seems close to perfection.
We've got you covered if you want a setup like this for your low-style Toyota.
