There's a German brand called Imotana. They make custom football boots by taking your exact foot measurements not sure if you've checked them out. Another point the professional players have every boot of theirs custom made according to their foot using casts. So if anything it's the non pro players who get affected by this.

So much to say, I play semi-pro and college soccer and wear vivobarefoots for pretty much everything else. As much as I love the idea of a barefoot cleats, I wear the tightest cleats possible because any spare space means my foot’s gonna slide inside the shoe when I’m cutting or pushing off. It’s like comparing racing bucket seats in a car to a slightly bolstered seat, a bolstered seat will feel good in a straight line but turning at high speeds needs way more support from a bucket seat to keep you in place. I also only wear cleats for 2-3 hours a day, my feet have plenty of time to strengthen and recover the rest of the day.
@thebarefootsprinter
Жыл бұрын
No cleat is inherently healthy. My argument is that the last of the shoe is misshapen and that impacts the boney structure of the foot. Additionally, the sliding of the foot is what alleviates the torque in rotation and allows the foot to stabilize. It's a tradeoff for increased safety by lowering some performance. I'm not saying that foot shaped cleats don't come without a cost, it's just a lowered risk of blowing your ankle or knee out. At the end of the day, it's a personal preference on what shoes you wear. The bucket seat is a great analogy but breaks down when we look at rotational and lateral movement. The seat of a car is only intended to keep the driver still in a rigid metal structure. The driver doesn't need to make any movement in the car (especially with flappy panel gear shifters). The shoe is supporting a foot that is meant to bend, flex, and shift. Also, at the highest levels they're making sure the bucket actually fits the hips of the driver. I really do appreciate your response - I know this isn't particularly a popular position haha
@josea1707
Жыл бұрын
@@thebarefootsprinter Actually the bucket seat analogy is great because in performance motorsport, while they do shape the bucket of the seat to your hips they also try to make it out of the thinnest, strongest material possible to withstand impact while cutting down on weight. This means that any heavy impact felt thru a bucket racing seat is transferred directly through the material and to the body of the driver rather than acting as a cushion of structure and support for the driver's body like a normally upholstered custom fit seat would, making it the same trade-off as using traditional cleats vs foot-forming ones.

I have something to say ,, do you think going to the opposite “extremes” of (narrow) from football to (wide) from barefoot, is healthy? Specifically for preventing bunions… An answer in my mind is ( barefoot is the natural state, and the healthiest, but for specific sports we need a specific shoe to increase performance, and after that we get back to normal for the rest of the day…

To counter your thoughts on having a bit of movement in the cleat to take away from the torque on the foot, I would say that that actually can be dangerous for metatarsal stress fractures. I was running in Luna, barefoot sandals for seven years, and as I started to rack up the kilometres into 15 and 20 km and 30 km, the movement in the sandals, actually led to reoccurring stress fractures, which wasn’t from the surfaces I was running on, but rather the movement of my feet in the sandal.

Interesting points, but I personally could not use the special minimalist shoes highlighted here. The extra space in those shoes will make your foot slip around in the shoe which will cause blisters, and injuries too. Also picking shoes that are a few sizes too big is usually a recipe for accidentally kicking the floor when you mean to strike the ball. The added length and extra space in the shoe also decreases the feedback your feet get when you make contact with the ball. Perhaps getting the really wide shoes with toe spacers and the metatarsal insert could help with performance, but I do not think that would be very comfortable to have all those things in your shoe. Like why would I want to have a shoe with extra things smushed in to decrease space, when I could just get a normal shoe that does fit me, but doesn't have all that extra space? I also cannot fit into the mercurials, but I could fit into the Mizuno Alpha, Nike phantom GX, the predators, or any decent leather boot. I might have to check out the New Balance, but maybe my foot isn't as wide to need that.
@prevolve_

Aaron, if your feet are fitting fine in the cleats you mentioned, make sure your toes aren't getting deformed (if wearing them for prolonged periods of time, they will). Most notably those tight toe boxes jam your big toe and pinky toe inwards. Which has a net effect of many other issues around weakening your arch and other factors up the kinetic chain. You lose stability when your feet aren't grounded in the most optimal position. Imagine trying to do a handstand, and then "walk" with your hands. Your natural strength is to splay those fingers out and give yourself a wide base as opposed to your fingers all smashed together while trying to move. Same applies with our feet. Not trying to persuade you to buy our cleats, but did want to clarify a point. We can take your foot scans, and if don't want toe spacers, we would just build the exact shape of your toes as is. But if your toes are smashed together, we draw up a mock sample that shows what your cleat would like with a bit more space added to begin thee process of wearing a shoe while getting your toe splay back. Always down to chat more.

Thank you so much for your video!!! It confirms my suspicions! We had 2 extreme injuries on my team of 15 players this year (Achilles tear, Calf Sprain). 19:07 needs a giant highlighter placed on it. Case and point... Adidas predators have changed their cleat pattern, so the pinky-toe side portion of the shoe now only has 3 cleats (old was 4). They also changed from straight blade cleats to triangular spikes. The new cleats are substantially worse than the old ones because slipping risk increases when turning direction. It's just unfortunate from a consumer perspective - my only voice is to "not buy" but that does not improve the situation. Thanks again, hope the big manufacturers will do something within 15 years.

Ahh man, this more in depth one really got me thinkin... if you wanted a shoe that still gripped well, but allowed for that rotation so you don't injure your ankle, do you think a long, skinny spike, right in between the "knuckles" of the big and, I guess, second toe, do you think that might work? I think you'd probably need some stiffness right around the fore of the sneaker to do such a thing, so the spike didn't just drive into your foot and cause injuries, but I wonder if that might work, and just leave a bunch of holes in the field, totally nightmarish to the groundskeeper. I also wonder whether or not just a toe cleat might solve a lot of this, like a toe cleat that's flexible with little blades on the ends of the toes or something to that effect. Man, I just wish the major cleat makers, the sport booters, even just the regular mainstream shoe makers that just make sneakers, they all pretend as though shoes are just a totally solved market, a totally solved issue, and the only real innovations anyone could make are all around whatever the new yearly fashion trend is, like everything just exists in a vacuum. The actual product doesn't matter, just the packaging. Reminds me of some derrida type stuff.

yeah there are some cleats with conical studs placed around the ball of the foot to allow for rotation and pivoting. I'm not saying that this is the perfect way to stop getting injured but I believe injury prevention exercises are a more important type of conversation than whether or not cleats help or negatively affect athletes. I think that injury prevention workouts are quintessential especially in the early development of athletes while their bodies are still growing. I feel like we all know the type who are most likely to end up injured for example neymar gets injured in football almost like clockwork each season and the majority of the time its the same area his ankles, I'm not saying that he hasn't done much to try prevent it but I'm certain he wouldn't have done much when he was back in Brasil as a youngster he was more focused on his new found stardom being one of the most hyped up youngsters since Pele at the time

A few years back I played some indoor basketball in Altra Superiors, a trail runner. For me, at the time, they were the best feeling shoe I’d ever played basketball in, previously only ever having worn conventional basketball shoes to play in. The foot shape, splay of the toes and the slight lugs for the grip were, for me, the best non-slip grip I’d experienced on the pickup basketball court. For me, now, if I were to play again (have not played for a few years), not sure if the cushioning of those Altras would be to my liking on the court, after almost exclusively wearing non-cushioned “barefoot” shoes in recent years. I still have those Altra’s, and for me, they feel okay on dirt off road, but walking on hard smooth surfaces the cushioning does not feel that great to me. Prefer the basically no cushion of my Splay brand shoes, but I’d never play a sport in them, just don’t have that sort of build for it. Off the top of my head, I might try Realfoot’s Natural Runner 2, or some Tolos, if I were to play on a court again and decided the Altra’s weren’t to my liking. Never tried either of those shoes, yet, but have recently been looking at something athletic and not cushioned and those caught my eye as possibly working. They lean toward more in looks like a casual shoe, but maybe have enough athletic shoe durability in them. Maybe.

kneesovertoesguy, I just discovered, has a basketball shoe line. Uncivilized Athletics. While I wish them luck, because they are moving in the right direction, to my eye now trained on what a foot shaped, splayable shoe looks like, they look too narrow for my preference (as do vivobarefoot and a lot of other "barefoot" brands). Better than the torpedo shape of traditional shoes, yes, but, well, hopefully the photos don't convey the actual width and are actually wider. That's not yet been my experience, though. Narrow in the photo has been narrow in fit in my limited experience-compared to photos of Altra Superior's, they definitely look more narrow. They also have "support" and are cushioned, and while cushion may be of value in a basketball shoe, maybe, at least for one transitioning to non-cushioned shoes, I definitely question the support they advertise. What does that mean?

I appreciate the attention to detail and research in your video. However, the reason behind the seemingly "stupid shape" of football boots (or soccer cleats) nowadays actually has a significant impact on performance. Firstly, most of us don't play soccer for more than two hours a day, so all-day comfort is not a priority like it is for sneakers or long-distance running shoes. Secondly, the football boots you used as an example in the video are Mercurial, which are known for their narrow or tight fit and aggressive traction. This is why the stud pattern is so aggressive. There are still plenty of football boots that provide many different characteristics for the outsole, such as TF, AG, SG, and Turf, each with their own unique uses. However, the most important thing that you forgot to mention in your video is "the touch" or responsiveness while playing football. I've played with many football boots that gave me comfort and a natural shape, but they lacked the responsiveness and ball feeling that's necessary for a 90-minute game. That's why even after many years, the shape and breaking-in phase of football boots still exist. It's all about the touch and feeling of the ball during the game, not for all-day wear.

Good points. Although I'm curious which pairs you are referring to that have had a "natural" shape. We are trying to change the norm of that break-in phase. What that's really doing is, breaking your toes inwards. Its nice to have that touch/control on the ball, 100% agree. But imagine having a cleat that fits like a glove right out of the box. We're not able to compete at their price points (yet) but someday we hope to have more options.

Thanks for the feedback and I agree that the "touch" factor is important. However, it's also highly individual and variable. My argument is that since the modern cleat was introduced a century ago, studies consistently show high correlation to injury (ankle and knee) and there has been little to no effort made to alter the underlying last. When the plastic sole is narrower than your foot, there is a loss of function in the toes, a compounding of forces at the ankle, and a loss of control at the knee. It's not pretty. At the end of the day, your shoe choice is your preference. But intensity in use case matters. Those two hours a day are also where you experience the highest forces. That's like saying car tire fit doesn't matter because I'm only hitting the race track for a few laps. If something will break, it's gonna happen then! It's not about comfort, per se. it's about function. Touch is one aspect of that, yes, but off ball movement is essential since most of the game is spent in that mode. There are so many things we can explore with shoes and boots that aren't even on the table right now. Just because the norm has been narrow/tight shoes doesn't mean that's best or even closet to what's possible. When it comes to your feet, you're right. I'm just sharing what I hope will be a new chapter in footwear and sport technology!

Depends on your sport. I like the Rush the best, but the freeze v4 Low is good. However, it'd be your preference on which of the soccer cleat models you'd like. You just choose the wide toe box option.

Been going through this whole scenario the last two years. All of the cleats shapes narrow into the midfoot which is the widest part of my feet. The squeezing creates a really intense ache on the outside of my feet after running for 15 minutes (depending on the shoe), and you wouldn't feel it trying them for the first time in a store. Nothing wide or foot shaped exists from my research. My most comfortable boot was one I wore 9 years ago that I left in my closet with a shoe stretcher inside the whole time. It had basically been reshaped into an oval. So my only thought is get something moldable and break it in thoroughly.

The manual stretching can get you more options but it doesn't work super well on all shoe models depending on construction. Fortunately there are more options now, but it can be rough out there if you're in touch with your feet!

Mizuno, Asics, and some other Japanese brands. These Japanese brands make wider fitting cleats to accommodate Japanese feet which are typically wider at the forefoot. I personally wear Mizuno Morelia Neo 3 MIJ for soccer and love them

new balance wide versions aren't actually "wider" there's just more material near the laces. You just stretch the shoe out more and wind up getting a muffin top effect as ur foot hangs over th soleplate which is identical to regular width versions
@thebarefootsprinter

I've bought a regular (D) width and a wide (2E) width and there is a substantial difference in that half inch width increase. I know what you mean though regarding manually stretching out the shoes without adjusting for a wider base/last. The plastic/rubber bottom cuts up into your foot

My cousin always ask why I don't want to play football in our adult years now. I enjoy the game but will not go back to wearing football shoes which make my toes smash into each other. I already have a bunion on one of my feet when I got when I was younger. All the information I know about "baresfoot shoes" (shoes that have enough room for my toes to spread ) and actually being able to wiggle all my toes everyday is something that really makes me happy and won't be planning on going back. I even went out of my way to purchase barefoot "safety shoes" after a rule was placed at my employer about having to wear composite safety shoes everyday that have composite toe protection in case a heavy item were to fall on them my toes wouldn't get hurt. The composite toe barefoot shoes I'm talking about is the "Birkenstock QS 700" if anyone also was wondering.

Good information. What about the stability bar under arch on soccer boots? You had the one brand that was in production that was able to twist . Wouldn’t this damage the arch or plantar fasciitis.
@thebarefootsprinter
Жыл бұрын
The stiff midsole and any stability bar that runs the length of the arch is designed to give more resistance and spring to translational movement (movement going straight forward). Like, more bounce in each step when you load the plastic plate and pop off of it. Some of this material is also designed to keep the plastic bottom from snapping underneath - there's a certain load tolerance that shoes have to manage or else they break, so companies shoot far north of that which can make an overly stiff shoe (given the limitations on the material they use to construct). A healthy arch/plantar fascia is incredibly resilient. We just forget the context that humans played sports and moved around the world either barefoot or in leather moccasins/sandals for millennia before we invented the modern cleat and foam shoe in the last century. You'll lose some performance with the super flexible cleat but gain a lot of safety.

Bro, go out run against a professional EPL player and see if your custom football boot and they use their football maybe even an amateur, player there's no way you win. These boots have been modeled and tested for years these companies know what they're doing. There's boots know as speed boots they're supposed act like springs and give you a push when running. Even in shooting at a goal, your custom football boot is not gonna compare fairly to a boot like a the Nike Phantom GX or a Predator Accuracy. Also these so called "gimmicks" as you say actually make a difference on a pitch. (except for the tungsten toe weight)
