Spec the truck with gears so that when you are at highway speeds you are in the torque band. Torque comes on around 920 rpm and starts dying off right around 1400 rpm.

My next truck will be a Peterbilt 579 with X15 Performance Series engine 13 or 18 speed transmission 3.25 or 3.08 finals and low profile tires. I don't believe that you need 3.36 finals with a Performance Series engine to pull tanks and vans at or lower than 36287 kg.

There’s a lot of simple things that would really improve the reliability and serviceability of the DD engines like doing away with plastic coolant lines and plastic oil pickup tubes. Those are big problems. Lots of plastic quick connects that leak and break. Putting the air compressor anywhere’s but where it’s at would be nice along with the quantity control valve that’s a pain in the ass on those short hood cascadia trucks. Our dd deleted trucks really do great.

Love my DD15 (2019) 650k the only thing that's gone wrong with it is the high pressure fuel pump imploded and it cost $7k to fix but it's up and running good again. My Volvo (2015) with the D13 was the biggest POS almost caused me to go bankrupt. And I put .20¢ a mile into my maintenance account.

@@dell7054 Since your buying a used truck definitely immediately start with .15¢ a mile in a separate account you only touch for big breakdowns. Pull all your normal services out of your own pocket, make sure you got a good accounting service that dedicates it's business totruck Drivers I use ATBS. you need to learn how to service your own truck (grease, change oil and fuel filters, prime fuel system) you'll save tons of money doing it yourself and it's your truck so you'll make sure to do it right. Make sure you have at least $5k after you buy your truck. To many drivers out here buy a truck have a couple of simple breakdowns and they're up shits creek. By a nice socket/wrench set like a $200-400 one but a heavy duty plug kit buy an air hose to fill up your tires with a glad hand attachment. Learn how to blow dual tires back on the rim. Knowledge is power. The more you can do by yourself the more time and money you'll save.

The DD-15 has less Torque at Higher RPM's because the ECM fuel curve is written that way .. to force drivers to keep the RPM's down for better fuel Economy .. A simple Flash on the computer and give it more fuel at higher RPM's and a DD-15 can make more power at Higher RPM's too ..

To me it seems the only thing Detroit on the DD engines is the name. It is a Mercedes engine to the core. They bought into Detroit for the name and dealer network. The DDs We have give good service as long as the plastic oil pickup tubes don’t break or the o rings suck air and ruin them. We have 2 nice trucks with low mileage blown engines now from broken plastic oil pickup tube. My picks in order would be c15 cat ,12.7 Detroit ,14L Detroit Cummins n14,DD 13-15.

The DD13 block is cast in Germany at the Mercedes Benz engine casting plant. The outside of the block ha a waffle texture to it. Here in North America these engines get caked with clay, mud, and other debris. This causes the engines to become a heat sink and tend lead to engine failures that at a higher rate than the DD15 or DD16. The DD15 and DD16 engines are built on the same block. The DD16 is a stroker version of the DD15.

@@isaacrecord6162 the DD13 engine block is cast in Mannheim Germany. The block is cast with waffling texture on the outside of the block for the purpose of allowing for a thinner block wall. DD13 engines in North America tend to catch clay, mud and other debris in the waffling and turn the engine into a heat sink which in turn reduces the life of the engine considerably. I used to build diesel engines at MCLB Barstow and 8th Motor Transportation Maintenance Battalion at MCB Lejeune. My personal opinion is that CAT 3406E, and C15 single turbo engines, Cummins N14, IXS15 (with a EGR delete), X15, Detroit Diesel Series 60 14 liter (with EGR delete), or DD15 and DD16 engines are the only engines to look at.
