I’ve used a number of brewers but have settled on the TechniVorm Moccamaster for my morning cup and the Bonavita when needing more than 4 cups. I use the 8 “cup” version of the Moccamaster with the adjustable flow rate basket half open. This gives proper extraction time and the correct percentage of TDS for light to fully city roasts. Taste wise, this has consistently brewed the best cup out of the 6-7 brewers I’ve tried. Key to a good cup is great water, correctly, freshly roasted beans, and often overlooked, correct grind size with little fines or boulders. You’d be astounded how much simply changing burrs will effect the taste.

Believe me, I am not. I just changed my burrs and instantly noticed a difference. I want to swap out the motor on my grinder with a variable speed as I have heard that slower motors make sweeter brews. Thank you for sharing!

I've used my Technivorm for over 10 years. Daily. Home roasting for over 15 years. Leave the brew lid off the brew basket. My model allows me to bloom the roast. I turn it on, let it bloom, give it a stir, then let it drip. May or may not stir again. Usually not. I brew 8-10 cups daily. I love the simplicity of the Technivorm. An automated pour over.

I’ve had my Technivorm for I don’t even know how many years. I got used to the workflow. About filling the basket with grounds: there’s a cut out in the reservoir lid that allows you to push the brew wand to the side, which makes pouring the grinds into the basket as a last step easy. Thankfully mine can sit in a space in my kitchen where I don’t have to pull it out to fill with water.

I immediately drink the coffee I brew and do not like metal carafes. So ease of use for the Moccamaster is just that, easy. I am not the type of person who drinks a couple of pots of coffee a day , I have one tall mug, ( line 4 on the Moccamaster carafe ) so I do not have a carafe sitting on a hot plate. Regarding cheaper coffee makers including Cuisinart, they genearlly last a couple of years for me, with a variety of problems. This includes the popular german coffee machines as well. And speaking of Breville, I have had some issues with overheating and also that it stops the Gold brewing with water still in the basket. Try using 5 tablespoons of baking soda mixed with a half cup of Hydrogen Peroxide in your carafe. Close the carafe with the screw on cap, then shake it vigorously for a minute or less and leave it overnight. Then open the lid, shake it for a momnet and then rinse with water. The Carafe should be shiny clean inside. This also works well with stainless steel Thermoses.

These are some fancy pants machines. I typically brew just one cup of coffee. For this reason, I have adopted a simple #2 Melitta pour over technique. I buy roasted beans at the grocery store and grind them at the store in batches. I boil the water in a pot on the stove, then let it cool for 30 seconds (for temperature control). KISS. Surprisingly, I have found that not all paper filters flow at the same rate. Melitta kraft paper filters flow far faster than other brands. I prefer them for this reason.

I usually brew an Aeropress or V60 for a single cup of coffee. When I’m lazy or wanna brew more cups, I use my KBTS. It’s small enough to not be obnoxious on my counter while still brewing a large enough amount. I like the manual brew basket that eliminates some of the annoyances you had with the automatic brew basket. I use a Wyze smart plug when I want to setup my brew at night and have fresh coffee in the morning. I just setup the brewer and turn the switch on. The Wyze plug will turn on after the timer finishes.

REALLY well made video! Nice work. I’m commenting only 10 minutes in but it’s because I’ve been dialing in our Technivorm Moccamaster. I have been drinking Chemex and Hario V60 coffee for 20 years. My wife has always loved the Moccamaster her and her roommate from college had but I never got a good cup out of it. A couple things i’ve noticed about this particular brewer that are different from my brewing style are that it starts at 195°F, hangs around 200°F and then ends around 205°F. When I do a pour over, I brew exactly the opposite; hot bloom and let the kettle cool naturally. I’ve also found that medium roasts do much better in the Mochamaster. It doesn’t get hot enough for light roasts and is much too hot for dark roasts even when adjust grind size to account for excessive extraction. I’ve also found that grinding a little courser than what the manufacturer recommends does better in the final cup.

There are many "Expired" SCA certified models. The manufacturers let their cert expire after 3 years, rather than paying SCA another $5000 per model to "stay on the list". So there are LOTS of great coffee makers out there, other than "current SCA list". Like a Ninja or Bunn or Zojirushi for $70. Bonavita makes a great machine too. Also, Zojirushi (Japanese) makes top notch gear and brewers for only $70 -150.

Hey, if you're trying to get into specialty coffee, roasting uour own beans is the last thing you should look into. Roasting is its own hobby as you'll never really roast better coffee than actual roasters, even with the most expensive home equipment. I'd focus on getting a great grinder and on perfecting your brewing technique. You absolutely need a great grinder as coffee needs to be ground fresh and can't be gotten preground.

To me, the best Moccamaster is the Club Line classic with the glass carafe. I use a silicon trivet between the hot plate and the carafe because the hot plate does get too hot too fast. During brewing the hot plate will overheat the first few ounces of the brew, so a cheap silicon trivet will save your pot of brew. The hot plate is great for keeping the coffee warm after brewing though. Overall, it is easier to use than the square bottomed funnel version. The parts supply for Techinvorm is flat out light years ahead of its competitors. Parts availability is so comprehensive that you could build an entire Moccamaster from the ground up if you wanted.

A better budget set up is a manual pour over system. This is what I use. If you watch the coffee geek channels, you'll think pour overs are an arcane art, with weird precise pour amounts and timing. If you have a coffee expert's palate, you can get deep into the weeds, but you don't have to. A simple Melitta cone, a coffee scoop, and a more or less accurate water amount will produce good, if not amazing coffee. You can even get away with a cheap blade grinder, or fresh store-ground coffee. This is how I made coffee for years, and it was good. I only got geeky in 2020 - and I'm still nowhere near the pros. I weigh my beans, use a modest burr grinder (Baratza Encore) a temperature controlled kettle, and weigh my water. I bloom for 30-60 seconds, then pour the rest of the water, no fuss. With this setup I make better coffee at home than most cafes, even the fancy ones. I urge anyone looking for a better cup than their current machine makes to try pour over. A Melitta cone is not expensive; if it doesn't work for you you're not out much money. My entire setup, without the electric kettle and grinder, cost less than $30. [Aeropress is also good, but it's a different style of coffee.] George, please *do not* enter me in the contest. I have no interest in any drip machines.

Customer support said: "The borosilicate glass lining can be easily damaged when it comes into contact with anything abrasive. The carafe is not covered under warranty. I have to disagree on build quality. You were discussing usability features, which we all have an opinion on, and I respect yours. For build quality however, the MoccaMaster has a 5 year warranty, and offers replacement parts for every component. Personally I love the MoccaMaster's coffee, but to be fair, I do agitate the basket during the brew, so it's not a straight out of the box brew. I believe that the MoccaMaster was designed for european power which means a faster brew. That would force the water through the brewhead faster and result in better distribution.
@campagnollo

I think you made the Moccamaster more complicated than needed. You don’t need to swap the lids on the carafe unless you are traveling. When you want to put the basket in, you can swing the spray arm away; there’s a slot in the tank lid for this reason. As for the basket lid, I find it superfluous and just leave it off.

I was looking for an upgrade from my black and decker of 7 years and did a lot of research. I wanted something under $100 but then I started looking into SCA. Well the Zwilling was cheapest certified. I looked online and right now the brewer is %25 off. If you sign up for email or look up coupon codes you get an additional 15% off. Therefore I bought it because I got 40% off for a total of $127.49 compared to normal price of about $200. I think this is a great deal for the price of an SCA certified brewer. But just note I bought the glass version. I don't need nor want coffee sitting in a carafe for hours. I would prefer to just make a new batch as necessary. We will see it's reliability and functionality but I am super excited!

Nice review. For those of us that like the simple approach my go to coffee is 1 teaspoon of instant and 1 teaspoon of Greek coffee with honey to taste. Just add hot water and cream. The times I want it a little stronger I add an additional 1/4 teaspoon of instant expresso. Basic I know but does the trick.

I preferred the coffee from my Breville but after about eight months or so, I gave it to my sons who had got an apartment together. It just brews a harsh, muddy cup of coffee. They agreed and gave it away. I’m not affiliated with Breville or Moccamaster. I just didn’t like it. I want to like moccmaster because it has such rave reviews.

I bought a Capresso CoffeeTEC Model #471 w Stainless Steel Carafe for $149 in 2003. Great coffeemaker! I cleaned and descaled regularly. I never got into the milk frother, just made good coffee. Yes, I am still using this today (20+ years). I just broke the drip stop (yep, dropped the drip basket on the floor), called the Jura 800 number and, to my chagrin, they have no more parts for this. I'm about ready for a new brewer with a stainless steel carafe. 😎

I purchased a Breville Smart Grind Machine almost a year ago from Amazon. It has been inconsistent at its best. It produces a great cup of coffee but the problem is that 9 times out of 10 it fails to produce the correct amount of coffee (8oz, 10 oz or 12) unless the tank is full. I can use either whole bean or ground coffee with this machine but once again the machine fails to live up to its reputation. When switching brands of coffee I have noticed that for some reason or another this machine will go thru beans like a hot knife slicing thru butter and find myself going thru an entire bag of coffee beans in not time at all. Classic example of a machine being over engineered. I have sent one machine back for replacement and am on the verge of sending the second unit back.

Best coffee (espresso) investment I've made is a Capresso Burr Grinder. I've had it for years now and gonna cry if it ever breaks. The 3speesso makers I've bought (all under $250) all break in less than three years. The other item I've been loyal to for over 10 years is Dancing Goats beans in Olympia WA. Fast shipping, always within a couple days of roast and a variety of sources beans. The best beans for my tastes, although rarely available, are the Sierra Mixteca beans out of Oaxaca Mexico. Heaven.

I figured out a way to avoid buying expensive coffee brewers. The secret is to mix so much crap in the coffee that no matter how you brew the admixture, it tastes the same. My recipe: 1/2 cap organic Colombian coffee beans 1/2 cap of organic espresso coffee beans 3 or 4 chocolate-covered pecans spritzed with a small amount of distilled water. 1/2 teaspoon Vietnamese cinnamon Grind the mixture as long as you can stand it. The coffee will be in a clump, all stuck together, and the pecans probably won’t break up. Pick out the pecans and eat them. Take the coffee and put on top of 3 layers of wet paper towel, Crunch up and sprinkle 3 fresh eggshells over the coffee. (I have been crunching eggshells in my coffee basket for years and can’t remember the reason, but it’s become a tradition.) Set the brewer to “rich.” If you want to add something to it, use almond coconut milk, or if after 10:00 AM, Kahlúa or Bailey’s. Enjoy!

Thanks for the honest and great in-depth review. I'm about to switch back from my bean-to-cup to a regular drip coffee maker for my morning coffee (I just don't really like "regular" black coffee from a bean-to-cup machine, no matter the beans). Seems like the Zwilling might be a good choice. Any chance you have tested it with smaller amounts than 4 cups (I only need 2 in the morning)? My other alternative would be a wilfa machine that lets me manually adjust the flow rate in the brewing basket for smaller amounts of coffee, but I somehow like the Zwilling more.

Thank you for your kindness. The breville is hard to beat. If you drink 4 cups of coffee a day or a 16oz mug, the breville will be fine. I love mine and use it every day. If you are just making two cups, it might be best to go with a clever dripper. A lot less money. I would also invest in a scale and a hot water kettle as well. I hope that helps. All the best!

For those with the Cuisinart, I turn the coffee maker on with the bold setting and leave the lid up and when the water is nice and hot, I'll lower it down to start my brew. Was looking of "upgrading" my cuisinart, but not sure if it's required now, may check again later if I need to get a replacement if my coffee maker dies on me.

Thanks for the informative video. Have you tried a gold filter vs. paper? Sounds like may result in deeper richer flavor, maybe not good for city roast style though. A prior brewer we had would result in bitter brew, adding a small pinch of salt before brewing to the grounds or carafe helped reduce bitterness. Tried Bunn as well, one that kept the water hot all day so would brew really fast, machine didn't last and was an electricity hog. Currently have a Calphalon, the design makes it a little difficult to use but tastes decent.

So my biggest problem with the gold filter is that the sediments that are so fine are in the cup and it makes for a very concentrated cup. I find that to be the case for light and darker roasts. I prefer not to use those filters. Thank you for letting me know what you use. I appreciate you reaching out all the best!
