Has anyone actually done a look at whether it actually helps “preserve” books any better than other methods? Also if this preservation was such a significant reason why is there not a larger market for slab style cases and just put the comic in there with some micro chamber paper? It would do all the protecting while still allowing you to access the book.
@holyharlot5222

@@robertt9342 100% there are better ways to preserve expensive paper. CGC Slab cases have no UV protection and the comic often bounces inside the case absorbing damage. Displaying on a wall is like the worst possible way to preserve a comic book. You can sit in your chair and watch it deteriorate

#PreScreen - The answer is actually quite simple, when you send your books in to CGC, CBCS, or PGX to get graded, select the prescreen option and set it to 9.8 - That way you’re only out $5 (+ shipping costs) for the books that don’t make the grade you want. These “rejects” come back raw and you can decide then to keep for your PC or sell.

This just tells me that raw books are overvalued. People buy them in hopes of hitting the 9.8 lottery. (Especially if you just buy on eBay without physically inspecting). I would be not comfortable cracking open an 8 and selling it as a “high grade” raw with out disclosing the grade and giving the buyer an opportunity to inspect. Im thinking of sending in some of my old bronze and silver keys just to see what grade they get and for the cleaning and pressing. It gets expensive ( $90 range ) per once you factor in all the fees fast pass (I can’t wait a year plus) and shipping. Still debating but pretty close to pulling the trigger. I like your attitude. It’s a hobby not an investment business.

#raw all the way. I do like to read them. Just very carefully! Sure a slabbed book will retain value and probably always be in high grade and be protected. But with grading, pressing and cleaning fees, you run a risk of losing your shirt if you submit a large amount of books. I submitted 4 total books since 2010. 3 came back 3.0/4.0 (1959 books) and Batman Dark Knight 1 came back 9.8 (I was hoping for a 9.2/9.4!) Luckily once I sell the Batman I'll make mad profit. But the other 3 books I lost on.

I've returned to comics after a 30 year hiatus and found that some of my goodies are worth something and discovered "slabbing" is the new thing (new to me). Very interesting stuff considering I've now bought my own pressing/cleaning setup and have a new renewed interest into comics again (mid 50's). I find satisfaction out of bringing old dirty, bent, dented comics back to life and slabbing them for longevity. My compliments on this topic. Far more collectors need to understand the pros and cons of "slabbing". I have been collecting comic for over 40 years and I stopped slabbing about 5 years ago because of the overall diminishing returns. The obsession with 9.8's in the modern era obviously guarantees that in the future there will always be a relatively moderate number of 9.8's of all modern comics.... but it will inevitably lead to a corollary market where those 9.6's and lower will get some love.... but it will only occur over time. How many have the time to wait another 10 years to get more value out of an 9.6 or lower? I'm 52 years old. I don't have time to "play the waiting game". It is far more intelligent for my circumstances to maintain "high grade" RAW comics and sell them than to waste money 'slabbing' them. [There are, of course some notable exceptions to this, but as you rightly suggest, the present market does not think in perfectly symmetrical terms]. The disparities between a 9.8 and a 9.6 can be as little as a slight crinkle along the spine. Also, it is worth pointing out that (in my estimation and experience) at least 20% (or more) of modern comic books are as low as 9.2 at the date of purchase. Thus, at least 20% of modern comics are less than a 9.8 right off the press! [Again, we can disagree on the 20%, but I do believe that between the time of the printing and god forbid 'diamond shipping' and the retailer handling and the placement in a customer's 'pull-box'--- the likelihood of a comic being a 9.8 once it is in your hands.... is diminished. At the end of the day, it is, as you indicate.... about RISK. How much are all of us willing to gamble on a grade? Great video.

I just don't trust slabbing books. I dont mean the hard to tell books either, like the naked eye looks perfect. A gentleman brought in a cgc graded ASM 252 and it had a 9.6 grade. But the book looked awful. Rusted staples, the spine was dinged up and down and you could even see where someone used the book to trace it or wrote on top of it and the back looked awful.. I can't imagine that the inside of that book was so good that it negated the awfulness of the cover. I definitely don't dismiss or look down on slabbing like a lot of my customers do, in fact I always have my silver age books stabbed before selling the especially on ebay. My personal preference #raw. For me personally it takes too much time and money for books, out of my personal collection, that I would never sell anyway. #slab - At the end of the day, slabbed comics are the only way to guarantee an industry wide excepted grading system standard. Raw books will always be questioned as to what grade the state of a comic is in. The only time I purchase raw comics is when I am getting a deal and that particular comic can be cleaned/pressed to a high grade (for me that is 9.0 or better). To save on the cost of cleaning and pressing I do all this myself. However, that is a whole subject in itself.

#Raw As a reader and collector I’d rather have raw books in my personal collection. This is a good discussion. As a seller, you definitely need to know what you’re getting in to and not go in blind or with unrealistic expectations of easy money. As a buyer, if you’re buying a graded book you’re paying for someone else having done the work of determining the condition for you. In a sense, the price you pay is a truer representation of the books value. If you buy raw, the grade is more subjective and you have to rely on yourself to determine condition. The book may be over or under priced. You could overpay or get an amazing deal. So, buying graded gives the buyer a level of confidence because the grading risk has been taken on by the seller. Buying raw keeps the grading determination on the buyer.

I mean I definitely get where you're coming from with these examples. I'd say the important thing to really take into account is get good at grading. Because I totally understand the throwing out of numbers as you're doing, but it's no different then buying a car right? A book has an MSRP based off the grade, and the onus of responsibility is on the buyer to get a comic at an appropriate price that will garner you money after sending it to CGC, if not solid profit with the best possible grade. I mean with the Jimmy Olsen 134 example, like I'm sorry to the guy who in a not smart move over pays for the raw copy lol. So once again, I'd say the comparison make less sense to me with raw vs graded and it's simply important to buy at the right price. It's the buyer's job to make sure the book as a whole is graded appropriately before sending to CGC based off what you need back.

The plastic is oil based and will leech into the book over time, some people have gotten a rainbow effect on the inner sleeve. #Raw. The deeper I get into this hobby, the less I like slabbed books. It makes total sense if I were ino hockey and baseball cards. But with comics, it's just eye candy. That book can never be enjoyed in the same way again. Again, your collection is your collection, enjoy it anyway you wish.

@@MintHunterComics I started getting some books graded about a year into when CGC started. My first con with them having a table to accept books was about a year later. The big thing they promoted was the fact that people working there were not collectors. They were professionally trained bipartisan employees. Which I loved. But then I met and spoke to those people at the table. A couple of them were graders. I found out they were collectors as well. They both very nicely told me that their copies of Hulk 180, 181 and 182 that I was submitting that day weren’t as nice as their copies. Completely turned me off of grading for a very long time. One of the reasons I submit books to CBCS only, and I haven’t sent that many so far. So #raw for me.

Super late to the party here... my 2cents... I like my raws for the mysterious potential of the grade they could bring. Sometimes I probably have a 9.0 but, blinded by my adoration for the cover, think it to be a 9.8. And I'm happy with that. I like my slabs for that hard/nonsense 9.8 on the top left. However these days... that 9.8 label is meaning a lot less to me when the book physically looks like a 9.4 :(

The big problem with grading if high grades aren't scarce. Like with the deadpool new mutants. There are 1000s of 9.8s so anything less is bad. Where a 100 total graded copies of a popular book still really valuable.

What is it, Detective 880 Jock right? That’s one where the raw price for a high grade really hurts if it’s not a 9.8 too. Like potentially losing $ on a 9.6

Absolutely, but what do you do when you find out your old comics could be worth a fortune to speculators. I guess if it comes back lower than you wanted, you still only paid the cover price and the storage costs for lugging them around, in my case, for 40 years.

#Slabs As a collector there's no question for me. Slab them up. There's no way if I ever got my grubby hands on an Amazing Fantasy 15 (even very low grade) would I keep it raw so that I could go back and read it one day. I would chop off hands of anyone that tried to touch it lol Also, there is a reason museums don't let you go touching stuff to experience the history of that painting, document, whatever. If comics could stay mint while raw then sure go for it, but since that's not the case then at the very least I want my keys slabbed. For an example like the New Mutants 98 anyone paying that for raw is gambling they are going to get a 9.8 when they send it off (and they will indeed send it off to be graded), and not that the raw's FMV is actually more than a 9.4. I'd still rather have that 9.4 than the raw. I know what I'm getting with it. No hidden surprises like that ripped page in the middle the seller doesn't show you and that no one would inspect except the grader because who the heck is going to risk damaging the book flipping through it when they spent that kind of money. Even getting back a lower grade, if the price of the higher grades go up it brings up the value of the lower grades (just not as proportionally). I want my collection/investments protected. I'll read a digital or reprint version if I want to read a specific storyline again.

I appreciate the well rounded reply and answer and I am in agreement with you. I still think its odd that so many people harbour anti-slabbing ideas - it's extremely beneficial to the comics. Thanks again man! Ironically I'm submitting my New Mutants 98 newsstand in soon - wish me luck!

@@MintHunterComics . It is extremely beneficial… Right until SCS. I can’t speak on this fully, but based on the comments I have read I think the anti slab is sometimes about the resentment the grading services have done to accelerate pricing and transform the market from almost entirely collectors to investors and speculators. That combined with that many of these collectors value the tangibility of their collection, they can touch, smell and even look at the interiors. A suppose a slab to many of these people is nothing more than a trading card, where a double sided print of the cover incased is nearly as good, minus the actual monetary value. Personally I am not a fan of slabbing, but that just my viewpoint and don’t really expect others to share the same one. I do see the value in grading higher end items to make sure you get what you pay for, resto checks for example. I am not a fan of how the community views the CGC grading as absolute. A book graded 20 years ago may have deteriorated or have been damaged over time through various processes including fading and SCS. The grade then isn’t representative as the grade now. That’s one (not only) reason why they tell you to “buy the book and not the grade”.

Question matey. I have a very high grade copper and modern collection upto 2000. I bought everything printed. Except tmnt 1 1st print and such. But have it in 3rd print. If it was in previews it got ordered. So heres the question. Id like to liquidate, because it was all acquired at cover price. Is my best option to slab?
@MintHunterComics

Save up and submit a large batch of your best books to CGC. Pre screen for a 9.8. That means they'll only slab the cream of the crop. You will make you money back on the 9.8s and sell what else you have with it!
