Love the rant, I think a lot of Hot Wheels collecting is just people chasing hype and resellers. Once people see brands like Mini GT, Tarmac, TLVN, etc, it's so clear where the real value is for people who like collecting diecast cars.. and it's not with Hot Wheels at the moment. Having said that.. spend money on what makes you happy, but I seem to run into a lot of grumpy Hot Wheels collectors 🤔

Here's a thing, people was actually voting Hot Wheels because it's cheaper and affordable but the problem of the current generation was too many scalpers and these "so called" collectors are just jumping into the hype because someone said they make money easily which was not true! P.S: I saw someone in the Marketplace selling a Honda Civic mainline or R34 for $10-15USD which was INSANE!!!

As a veteran on collecting hotwheels, I just like them for being cheaper than other brands regardless of not being 1:64 accurate. Mainlines are for both young and old alike while Premiums are for full-on collectors out there, but some nowadays are on repeats (*coughs* Fast and Furious Premium) or struggling to be released due to licensing issues.

As a 1:64 collector, I try to acquire models from various brands as much as possible. However, the majority of cars in my collection are from Hot Wheels due to their accessibility and playability. I prefer cars that roll smoothly and effectively. While I could invest in a single, more expensive car, I haven't reached a level of financial comfort that allows me to casually play with such a model. So overall, it wouldn't be as enjoyable as Hot Wheels yet.

What makes HW annoying is when the mainlines are sold for cheap price but resellers sell it for a premium price. Better to spend money to other detailed brands than an overrated hotwheels scalper price release. 😭
@oliverjones6687

I think HW are way more popular because of the price (£1.50-2 here in the UK) and accessibility- you can pick them up in most toy shops and supermarkets. Premium brands however are pretty much only available online so there’s never that “I’ll have a browse while I’m here in the shop” scenario. I’m the same as you though, started on HW and now pretty much don’t touch them unless it’s something nostalgic or unique. The resale prices on them is what I really don’t understand 😕

I'm planning to do this with the Ford Mustang S197-II. However, Felix Kwong (founder, owner and director of Tarmac Works) said that dealing with an American manufacturer like Ford is a little tricky as a number of their models are domestic to the U.S, like the Mustang generation I mentioned, which may mean they're more open towards models that are more global (ie. available in more than just the U.S).

With how hotwheels has been becoming worse and worse, i've started to realize i'm collecting more Matchbox cars than Hotwheels now. Hotwheels doesn't make many unique castings anymore, and aren't taking big risks with what they are making, while matchbox, which is owned by the same people, makes unique castings and touches on the more obscure (For example, the subaru sambar, renault twizy, and citroen ami, all cars that hotwheels would be too afraid to touch, in case the castings fail), and they do all of this (usually at higher detail) for the same exact price as hotwheels. Also for my local supermarkets, it might not be an issue that is directly caused by hotwheels, but there are only fantasy castings for hotwheels left on the pegs every time I check, which just leads me further and further away from hotwheels. Great video!
@komrei7015

Hot Wheels supposed advantage against other competitiors is avaliability but, that isn't even the case anymore. There's some guy that hoards a particular model or set just to resell and can't find one for you own collection. It's to a point where it isn't even worth going out and seeing the pegs because they always are gone 9 out of the 10 times. Like c'mon man. I just want 1 RX8 from that FnF series and the S15 from the Boulevard series and I can't even find one in my city so far. Also, the reselling market sometimes is actually ridiculous especially the premium market. There has been a point where the Mini GT, Auto World, Inno 64, or even the Tarmac Work version of a particular model is cheaper and higher quality than the Hot Wheels version. All because of the hype... For example, any R34s whether it is mainline or premium. The car itself from Hot Wheels is more expensive than the Mini GT version and there's better quality ones from Inno 64 or Tarmac compared to overpriced R34s from Fast and Furious. Oh don't even get me started with Stance Hunters, Street Weapon, and Time Micro. They make good casting not going to lie but, the problem with them is that they are unlicensed. I got into Mini GT, Tarmac, and Inno 64 more due to this and only collect certain models from Hot Wheels more specifically the newer castings like the Altezza and I am completing the whole R32 model from Hot Wheels that has been released so far specifically the Nissan Skyline GT-R (BNR32). The old R32 is way too expensive for me to start collecting. After that, I am leaning into other brands more.

Hot wheels is cheaper if you get it on the pegs which you won’t. In my country after scalpers gets their hands on it, it usually ends up more expensive than other brands with higher quality. After i started collecting mini gt, tlv, inno64, and tarmac, i looked at my hot wheels collection and thought they look fugly and stopped collecting hot wheels ever since. Hot wheels are for resellers and not collectors.

I witnessed a 1:64 car meet recently and people get to vote which cars look the best. In a field of various brands with proper licensing (Hot Wheels, Mini GT, Tarmac Works, Inno64, Majorette, etc.) and various cars (911s, FIA GT3 racecars, LBWK builds, your typical performance vehicles, etc.), the winner, is a HW Premium RWB-bodied 911 in matte black. I thought a collector-grade scale model would take the top spot.

How about the price point and availability between the 2? I collect HW, MiniGT, autoart, tomica, majorette, muscle machines, Jada, etc. The primary reason is HW is affordable, and market are flooded with it (Including MAMA shops & 7 elevens). From a marketing point of view, their marketing strategies are definitely superior as well. Of course, Mattel have big budget, huge distribution channels, brand recognition that smaller companies can't compete with. In short, most collectors can easily find and afford HW compared to most other brands.

Hotwheels is an established brand since late 1960's, it is tested over the years. Of course there are other die cast brand which is way better on details. But considering the price(srp), hot wheels will always be a lot cheaper, more durable and playable. We cant help compare hotwheels mainlines to mini gt, tarmac etc etc., because of the hype price. But in reality it is still way cheaper if you found them on the pegs. Hotwheels are diecast toys that are meant to be collected and played, and not to be watched carded on your walls.

A lot of people these days chase HWs for resell and/or to stash 20 of the same cars just to show they're better than you. It's a huge issue, some HW cars are just too expensive. For instance, MK4 Supra. HW usually goes for $15-20, not even counting Premium ones. I'd much rather buy Auto World Supra that doesn't have a body kit, does have rubber tyres, is to scale with HW, and has actually opening hood, something HW only does on RLC these days. And don't get me wrong, I love collecting Hot Wheels, but for some cars, I'd much rather pay the same price for a non-HW with better quality.
