It's not humility. We are telling the truth because we know the truth. Memorizing cubes and roots and tables seriously doesnt mean you're good at math. Now if you'll compare yourself with even lower standards like American math education, you'll of course feel great. Compare yourself to Russia and China where people actually are good at math. Russians win almost all international coding competitions, math Olympiads, etc. They have math circles in schools. Most Red coders on Topcoder are Russians. Only 1-2 Indians have been red in many years that too from IIT Bombay. Same with China. Memorizing 9 cubed is 729 isn't called math. Solve theoretical maths. That shows your aptitude. Most IITs teach like this in the first year.

Let's not just leave it at culture, being good at maths is what gives Indians good jobs in the country and abroad. Indians can't afford being mediocre and hope high in career, as compared to developed nations. In an environment where good opportunities are scarce, you've to be competitive. The scenario is changing though, with the increase in wide variety of "good" career options.

The reason why maths is so important in India, is because of the education system we have, the one designed by the British, it was designed to kill all the creativity and innovation from kids mind, to make them into employees who would just follow orders without asking any questions, that's why they focus SOOOOO much on grades.

There are two ways to think about it. I remember scoring 98 out of 100 in my 10th board, and getting very disappointed when I found out later that I made a silly mistake for a 2-marker. So although we do learn a lot of cool tricks and calculation gets really fun with Vedic math tricks, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves for marks in maths and sci. And for people who aren't good at these, they themselves feel like they are stupid and sometimes the society also makes them feel that way. I believe kids need to be empowered to pursue whatever they are good at and not just get forced into being good at maths.

There is something called as "cognitive offloading". Like when you rely on an external environment say machine for some calculations or remembering something you are not using your brain and it will reduce your capability to that extent. Say after mobile phones, very few people remember phone numbers. Same goes with calculators. "Offloading our cognitive intelligence" :)
