I’m a Japanese living in Tokyo. Although I’m glad to see how Japanese people are active in cleaning in international events, we still have littering problems in Japan. Events like Halloween in Shibuya is becomes a huge mess, and local volunteers are the one’s cleaning other people’s mess. We even have littering problems at beautiful tourist spots like Kyoto as well. So, I just hope that Japanese fans at international sport events become a good influence to people back home and contribute from within as well….

Shintoism and Zen Buddhism are probably the main reasons, even back in Samurai times, even the poorest Japanese people bathed regularly. I remember reading about the arrival first Europeans (the Dutch If I remember correctly) arriving in Japan and confused the Japanese, on one hand the Dutch had bigger ships than the Japanese ever saw, armed with cannons, on the other hand the Dutch sailors stank, so the Japanese couldn't decide if these strangers were more advanced or not :D

As a Japanese, in my opinion, playing a match in a foreign location means being taken care of by someone else's house. That's why Japanese people show respect to others and keep the place clean. If cleaning itself is the goal, it is clear that the cleaners clean.

I went to elementary school in Japan. Yes, we are taught to clean. We get down on our knees to wipe down the classroom floors, no mops. To clean the restrooms we had mops I think. At lunchtime, we took turns becoming the servers filling up bowls and plates and such, at least from my distant memory. I attribute that kind of discipline to the reason why public restrooms and public places are so clean in Japan. Oh yeah, and there are classes that teach morals as a part of the curriculum. Aren't Koreans and Chinese like that?

What’s amazing is this sort of order carries over even among the poorest Japanese and Chinese. The Chinese came to Indonesia as planation workers, and now, despite being only 2% of the population, control over 70% of the nation’s industry. Funny how that ALWAYS seems to happen huh? Even in adopted Asian kids. A very talented set of nations and people.

As a Taiwanese, we have the same system in elementary all the way to middle school and at most high schools. However i believe we aren't as clean due to culture, we have a "cheap" mentality(投機取巧)if it doesn’t benefit me directly, i won't spend any of my time on it. We are selfish and don't want to do things for the greater good and only do things that will have direct benefit to us.

The Japanese really love orderliness and punctuality. They will serve passengers with late slips if the subway system happens to run a few minutes late. You could lend the same courtesy to Singapore as well. They even legislated the banning of chewing gum because of the mess it creates once disposed. Littering is not something that is tolerated and people can be fined if caught. Some of these policies can go a little too far, but it is conducive to maintaining a well orchestrated society.

I’m Japanese and a slob. I keep my work place spotless but my house is a mess ( thanks to my American husband). Americans always say they have freedom and they can do whatever they want to. Japanese don’t want to do whatever we want because we almost always want to respect other people first. Being quiet in public transportations, keeping clean in public spaces, not rooting in a time of crisis and such are for other people and keep peace and harmony with them, which is called “wa 和 “. It means also Japan itself. We enjoy our freedom within 和 because it’s disrespectful to disrupt 和 and when we disrupt other people’s peace we can’t enjoy our freedom. We have problems like any other countries but we are happy to hear when good sides of our culture is appreciated.

It's culture and upbringing here. It's not a matter of superiority. In the gym for example: people wipe down the benches and exercise stations used. I practice martial arts at a community gym. Once we finish training we do our part to sweep up the area we used. The wu shu group next to us is does their part in cleaning after use along with the judo and volleyball groups. When you go to a restaurant/izakaya (local bar restaurant) your given a hot towel to clean your hands before eating or drinking. Kids in school do many of the janitorial duties. To quote you guys, it's a cycle of life. It's been like this since the Edo period. Maybe before. Japanese society is not perfect. It has it's issues like everywhere else. People are people. Forgot your high school history book lessons didya? Bubonic plague(s), pestilence and continously warring between neighboring countries. @@magellankillerMany parts of Europe like Scandinavia owned relatively little colonial holdings or in the case of the Baltics none, and yet these places did and do far better off in the long run than those with colonies. Evidently the colonial overlords didn’t steal a ton if the Finnish, themselves a former colony, have more resources per capita. Also Africans divided themselves even when Europeans weren’t there, Ethiopia was scarcely occupied, for less than a decade in total, but the Tigray ethnic war there is in its historical lands of Axum. Literally everyone in that era destroyed and took whatever they could, the Europeans were just more successful at it. Look at the Qing holdings in the west in what is now Xinjiang. The same process of displacing the Uyghurs with Han has been going on for hundreds of years. Or what Japan did to Korea. The Aztecs brutalized the tribes around them so much they sided with the Europeans when they came. Or the Zulu or the slave kingdoms of Africa which sold their own and conquered other tribes to sell to the Europeans. It’s all a matter of perspective.

@keemstarkreamstar7069 Yes, most of what you stated was a part of the syllabus studied way back when. The Ethiopians of the MODERN era had been in wars with the Eritreans for that access to the Red Sea I do believe. Finland, now that's a land of mystery to me but that social strata is one of a kind from the little that I know about it. Yes, it was the Western Europeans that had wreaked the most havoc on the planet I do as others will concur. But when one mentions the continent of Africa and in accordance to its area is it difficult to comprehend the importance of the borders between lands that were essentially kingdoms? In addition I have come to expect without any additional context other than the accompanying terms of " The slave catching/selling of their own-enter the tribal African people here-as its the browbeat point of late. Yes, we understand that point as well 'because everyone had slavery in there history '......got it. African tribes warred with and had to conquer other peoples to either bolster there own numbers or in the case of trading or selling the captured as slaves to the Europeans hasn't the notion of the element of coercion ever entered the conversation as of yet or will this "Well Africans sold Africans as slaves and there were Africans in America that were as egregious in slavery as the white American slavers were..." conversation will ever be about?

There are signs posted on the road with fine for littering yet I see people tossing fast food bags and cups out the window. Also I think Japanese shame others and they seem to care about shaming vs the US "WTF you looking at". Shaming doesn't work in the US, so they should implement caning. Bare ass being whacked on public TV will probably be enough of deterrent for littering or destruction of public property Why is drugs prevalent in the US, because cops will not bother with it saying they got more important things to do...unless you're certain minority.

You sound very naive tbh. Japan, alongside South Korea, has the highest suicide rate from all first world nations, and is barely doing anything to tackle that problem. A (mostly) clean and technological advanced nation is no good, when people are socially stunted, cold and ignorant towards mental health. Japan has its own word for working yourself to death and despite the crazy working hours, the output is much lower than of countries like Germany for example, who work much less (and yes its a bigger nation but still...some comes down to how problems are faced and how direct the communication is). Japan is also dying out cause there is not enough support for people who want to have kids, not enough room to live and no work life balance. Also, they dont really like migrants. Its a very struggling nation actually but people who only go to visit shortly, who live there with alot of money or who just read mangas and watch animes, think its some kind of Lala-Land.

By the way, Japanese never leave 5 stars out of five on AirBnb reviews. The highest they will give is 3, just to show they have " higher standard " and again to "save their face." Also Japanese are only polite when they know they're getting direct and immediate benefits. That's why people enjoy visiting Japan, but not living in Japan. Japanese are rude as hell among Japanese.
