The lighter disc's help me a lot, mainly because I have limited arm speed, finding the best weight for your arm speed is essential for control and distance potential, if your max distance is 250 embrace it & dial it in, accuracy always wins.

Thanks for the video! As a 48 year old, 25 year regular disc golfer, this is affirming and helpful! I spent 2023 lowering my average disc weight from 173g down to 168g. It's made a considerable difference in control, distance, and consistency. I also don't feel like I'm working as hard to move this weight class. Always an ongoing experiement.. Happy Throwing all!!

Been disc golfing a few months. I'm 65, but better late than never. Getting a lot of great online content to bring my game up. Starting to get better distance and accuracy. I probably need more experience with disc selection, based on the specific the requirements of the shots. After watching the video today, I should probably buy an understable disc. Thank for the video!

Not a problem Rick, glad you got something out of it! Honestly, pick up a Latitude 64 River or Innova Leopard3 in a weight between 160 to 165g. They are both great stable distance drivers that will help you learn the game a bit easier over time. And if you want something faster with your current skill level and experience, go with the Innova Mamba or Innova Mystere 👍 Just make sure they aren’t too heavy

As a returning (and much older) player, I really appreciate content on the ‘mental’ side of disc golf - applying the principles of specific characteristics (expected flight shape, effect of wind, altitude, humidity and temperature, etc.) to specific situations on the course. Some of that can be picked up by watching pros in various conditions and eventually you can discern the patterns, but a scientific or empirical review is extremely useful in figuring out how to apply those concepts to my game. Thanks for the content - subscribed!

Thanks for adding this experiment to the mix. I'm 60, and my average decent distance is 280' with a 158g understable driver, such as the Mamba or Ballista. When I throw, the heavier the weight, it slows my speed down too much to maintain distance or flight path (the higher the weight, the more it dumps left). One helpful video regarding arm speed and distance using the same disc was done by Simon Lizotte. For approach shots and putters, I use close to max weight midranges and putters, as you suggest. I would love to be able to throw heavier discs, but until then, my speed dictates a lighter disc to get the speed I need. Thanks a lot for your video!

Wow, so much great information. I’ve been eyeing the river for quite some time, and thought if I went lighter, based on the assumption that lighter is farther, it actually is too understable in my drives and my high speed turns seemed more like -2 or -3. I now understand why having heavier discs would be beneficial for me. I like your disk selections, and educationalist videos, and the videos on the types of discs one should have in their bag.

Great video and I think one of the most important factors you mentioned is supposed disc flight for each particular disc. I throw about 375ft on average and have 175g Trespasses that I can get a full S flight out of. However, I also have a 162g Star Wraith that I can’t get any turn out of. So to get the supposed flight I either need to go lighter or break the disc in more. I do throw some lightweight discs like the Sapphire, Jade, and Air Sheriff and.they bomb and get full flights. I think your distance results would have been different if you picked a more stable disc to test. Most of the guys I play with never get a full flight out of their fairway or distance drivers because they throw max weight discs that they can’t get up to speed. Love the channel and watch all your videos.

I just started playing disc golf earlier this year and this is the first channel I subscribed to. I would like to hear your thoughts on playing in tournaments - how you approach the tourney, strategy for different types of holes, a "typical" day at a tourney, etc. The videos I would like to see in the future are how to practice, how to progress from beginner to amateur tourney player and beyond and any instructional videos that help you get from point A to point B. Like Canada, I live in Chicago and getting time to play at a course is limited now as it is getting into winter and along with bad weather, it is dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home. So what can we do in the winter to stay sharp or get better? Thanks!

This video is great. Here's why. I am 72 years old and playing with three physical problems, fused back at several locations, fused cervical spine in two locations and a fused right wrist (I'm right handed). My thought process was that if could get more speed and turn on release I would gain more distance. I came to this conclusion because my wrist if fused. So, I purchased an Innova Valkerie beginner and child weight disc in 111grams. At first the lighter weight distance averaged 20' further than my 169 gram fairway driver. After I got used to throwing it. However it bacame evident that it is very difficult to control in a head wind. Knowing that, I started reverting back to the heavier disc when throwing into the wind. What happened next is that (as you noted) I noticed that I can "feel" the heavier disc better on release, which lead to greater confidence in throwing a heavier weight. After some form improvements I can match the lighter discs distance. For me, the difference was confidence in the feel of the disc. As for further content, I would very much like to see some content aimed at players with disabilities. At my home course there are a number of folks like me with back problems that limit flexibilty. Perhaps content that would optimize a standing throw vs. X step, The standard videos always are aimed at younger and more physically able throwers.

As a new disc golfer(started playing in May of 2021 and have been obsessed ever since) having videos just like this one have been extremely helpful. Being able to see some data behind the differences in characteristics for each disc(such as which weight to choose, speed ratings, over stable, under stable, etc.) and how they would be applicable in a general sense really help me wrap my head around how to make future purchases that can be best to fit my style of playing. I understand that there is no "one size fits all" in disc golf, which is part of what makes it so difficult interpreting all the variations that come along with different discs and their purposes. This video was extremely interesting and helpful! Thank you!

Very nice video and it is actually pretty well in line with my 10 years of experience throwing different weight discs. Over the years, I've actually gone up in disc weight and feel like it has helped me quite a bit. I do think there is a certain limit to how heavy you can go when you don't have much arm speed, but once you go beyond 350-400' the weight shouldn't be much of an issue. With the light weight discs I have two extra issues not mentioned in this video: 1. The blizzard / air discs with bubble rims tend to beat in super fast as the material is more porous. Even the somewhat overrstable molds tend to end up in a very flippy state before the wear saturates. 2. The heavier weights provide a straighter flight. When you throw a light weight discs, you throw it a touch faster which makes the disc turn more. However, they also slow down faster due to air resistance making them fade harder as well. This leads to much more pronounced S-curves which are harder to control and in most cases are not really needed (e.g. open holes or straight tunnels). So yeah, I'm throwing max weight on all putters and mids, while being in that 173g range for all the drivers.

Salut! Good job testing the impact of weights. By the way, I love the River's stability; however I believe the plastic of a disc has a surprising impact on its stability; you should try a comparative experiment about that. Also another reason to bag a light weight disc is to have a disc that can float on water, making it easier to retrieve; however I don't use my light-weight disc often as it is less predictable. Please continue covering all aspects of the game, as you are very informative and detailed. A good example of a video that I enjoyed is your coverage of the Berg; this is not a disc for me (however the Reko is excellent), but I learned its purpose; before that video, that disc was a big mystery to me... Merci beaucoup pour vos efforts et continuez votre beau travail!

As a much older disc golfer (59 - started at 19) these types of tests are helpful. However this subject of weight of disc is a very complicated subject. The factors for each person is vast. Are you primary back hand or fore hand? How much speed can you transfer to the disc? What type of plastic do you like to throw? (what gives you the best grip?) etc. The only way for you to know what works for you is to find discs that you like, go out to a field & throw them. When I started playing in 1981 we didn't have a lot of choices of discs, so we got better with the discs we had. I started with a Wham o 41 mold, moved to a Kitty Hawk, and then the Aero. My suggestion to beginners is to pick one driver, one midrange, and one putter. Learn those 3 discs for 6 months, then try other discs.

Thank you for doing some experimentation on this! Real science is badly needed in disc golf! I think another big reason distance throws are made with lightweight discs is because the max distance shot is to throw high in the air and being lightweight helps the disc go much higher without stalling and fading.

You seem to have good insight into the physics side of disc flight, so please, keep the descriptive and explanatory tips and tricks coming. That is something we all have to deal with and need to be aware of.

I really like the videos where you show us how to throw a certain type of shot. As a beginner when I hear shot shapes talked about on jomez sometimes I'm a little bit confused. But your flex shot video really helps explain it

Anything using the flight tracker is interesting to me. I also like comparing different discs, helps me know what disc I could add to my bag to improve my game.

I have really enjoyed the series about shaping shots like a hyzer flip and the videos about disc golf rules! I would like to see more videos like those and ones showing why pros use certain discs for different shape shots.

Hey! Another great video guys. You really help make understanding what is going to happen a lot easier. 1. Future Content: More of the same stuff. Your tutorials and reviews are just great... But I know that isnt what you want to hear. So I will add it would be fun to see you do course reviews where you play rounds with friends and family. You did one of these recently and I really enjoyed it. 2. My favorite videos? Disc weight(this one), Plastic Type Base VS. Premium, Disc stability, You had a great video(maybe it was just social media post) about wind and how it impacts discs... but I cant find it... oh and your terminology video. You really condense "What is disc golf" into easy and manageable bites. I love it.

I really enjoy the "how we play" videos. As someone still very new to the game, it's great to see different approaches to various shots from different players of different skill levels. Seeing their disc and shot selections along with their results is very educational and is helping me to think more critically about my own game and how i approach a given basket on the course. Thanks for the great content!

Nice to hear this Leo! Our episode 2 wasn't as big of a hit, but we aren't going to stock with those videos anytime soon. Glad you are getting something out of them :)

I thought the weight comparison was fascinating. Really helped me make sense of some of my inconsistencies. For future videos, more ideas like this that compares aspects of the game that advanced payers consider but amateurs like myself probably haven't considered.
