One thing that’s always puzzled me since they came out they tell you that you need a special charger for them, but yet the stock stater and rectifier is OK. It just don’t make sense.🤷🏻 I will stick with my AMG for my Harley.

I was under the impression that Lithium batteries can last between 5 to 10 years, compared to 3 to 5 for a lead-acid, making them far better value for money.

I like lithium batteries. I own four motorcycles and no battery tenders. Even in the winter I can start them after a month when the temps are down in the single digits.

Another great video, thank you! I’m a fan of lithium batteries, but only for certain uses. Like you said, for my Harley Lowrider ST (and any other big torquey bike I’d own) I would only go AGM. The weight savings doesn’t really matter on a big bike, and I like the winter and overall charging reliability. But for my Triumph Speed Twin 1200 and Scrambler 400x, lithium has given me excellent performance year round, and the weight savings is a nice plus. I oversized the lithium battery a little for each bike for cold weather confidence, and still save about 6-7 pounds each. I have only used Antigravity brand lithium batteries. I’m not saying they’re the best, but I’ve used them for 2+ years with no problems and 100% perfect starting.

I have seen a few lithium batteries swell up and one catch fire. Lithium batteries are not environmentally friendly. Lithium batteries are very difficult to recycle and require huge amounts of water and energy to produce. "It takes 682 times more water to extract one tonne of lithium versus one tonne of sodium. "Recycling a lithium-ion battery consumes more energy and resources than producing a new battery, explaining why only a small amount of lithium-ion batteries are recycled. Lithium extraction using evaporation ponds, as is done in countries such as Chile, comes with a high water footprint. Studies show that contaminants may be released into the environment during the evaporation process, potentially affecting nearby communities. Water scarcity caused by mining could also threaten the livelihoods of indigenous communities. The overlap of mining sites with indigenous living areas has also led to forced migration and the abandonment of ancestral villages. For every tonne of lithium mined during hard rock mining, approximately 15 tonnes of CO2 is emitted into the atmosphere. There are pictures of masses of dead fish on the surface of the stream. Some eyewitnesses reported seeing cow and yak carcasses floating downstream, dead from drinking contaminated water. It was the third such incident in the space of seven years in an area which has seen a sharp rise in mining activity, including operations run by BYD, the world’ biggest supplier of lithium-ion batteries for smartphones and electric cars. After the second incident, in 2013, officials closed the mine, but when it reopened in April 2016, the fish started dying again. Lithium extraction inevitably harms the soil and causes air contamination.

Modern vehicles have computers that drain your battery all of the time. I have a Master Disconnect Switch on several of my Trucks , Loaders and Cranes. It keeps the batteries from getting ruined by a draw down can prevent a fire .. Or can stop a short our fire by cutting the power from the batteries.. Battery Type Self-Discharge Rate Per Month Lithium-Ion 2-3% Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) 25-30% Low-Discharge Nickel-Metal Hydride 0.25-0.50% Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cad) 15-20% Lead-Acid 4-6%

I did look in to them some years back when they became available, but like you, I found that not only do they cost 5x as much as a normal gel batterie, but the charger also cost a lot and I don`t care about the weight, a few kg less don`t make a big different for me, the possibillity of catching fire also made me stick to the gel batteries and just install a new one every 3-4 years (I live in Denmark and ride most of the year and it do get cold, so it is important that it starts in the morning)

Don't put a Lithium Battery in the Newest Harley Davidsons. The HD Computer is not compatible with them and they will fail. My Buell 1203 CC 10.5 to 1 Compression Ratio needs a strong battery. The Spec battery for my Buell is 200 cold cranking Amps. The starter stalls on compression stroke, this will kill a starter. I found a Hybrid batter that is small and Lighter but not as light as a Lithium batter though it is partly Lithium. It has 350 CC amps and really cranks my motor over even when heat soaked. I will add a link to this brand of battery in my own reply. You tube likes to Censor links

I only ever use good old fashioned lead/acid batteries in my Road King & my Moto Guzzi but my MV Agusta has a Lithium battery & always will. The battery itself sits at a slight lean & I would be worried the acid would leak. Horses for courses...

On one of my bikes After 2 yrs of not charging I just did a touch up trickle charge on my lithium Shorai in my 1K Repsol and in minutes it was at 80% only lost 20% after 2 yrs. And it only weighs 2.1 pounds..

One of the factors to consider is if the battery incorporates a BMS or not, which causes the charging issues with some bikes. Some applications use them as standard nowadays (motocross for exemple). The main advantages are huge weight reduction and less space requirement, which for cruiser motorcycles are usually not a problem. On the other hand, they cost a lot more.

I tried a lithium battery in a Honda Shadow 1100. Wasn't impressed. It didn't seem to have enough juice to reliably start the bike and then with it being cold blooded and all it just wasn't the best choice for me.

Since people started installing Lithium batteries in their motorcycle I have asked about the safety. But I have never gotten an answer. I have seen everything from electric public busses to electric scooters burning like a miniature volcano. Those use Lithium batteries. So what is the difference between an electric vehicle which uses Lithium batteries and putting a Lithium battery in a gasoline motorcycle? I have read heat can be a factor in a lithium battery catching fire so what if you are using one in a hot climate?

My question is, if you have to have a higher voltage to charge them, thus the special charger, then how does a stock charging system keep them charged. Obviously it works since I have not heard of any issues with all the batteries out there. I’ve had 3 lithium battery cars so I’m comfortable with the safety risks and I would love the weight loss. I’m on the fence leaning to putting one in my ultra.

Well, most motorcycle charging systems put out 13.8V to 14.8V, which is perfect for lithium batteries that need 13.8V to 14.6V. The special chargers are mainly for charging off the bike to keep everything balanced and extend its life. Also, *most* lithium batteries come with a built-in battery management system (bms) that helps regulate the charging and protect against overcharging. So, your stock system should work fine, but just make sure the voltage doesn't go over 14.6V, as that could shorten the battery's life. ive heard about changing ones voltage regulator to one that is more made for lithium batteries in mind, some say that seems to help the "just in case" of over charging. some use stock regulators and stator and have no issues at all, especially newer bikes. older bikes and their regulators however are said to have issues with controlling the overcharging aspect so lithium batteries are not compatible with older bikes for the most part.

I feel as if lithium would be more idea just due to the drainage being not as strong as lead acid batteries BUT with that said, I'm very biased about them and do not like them so I wouldn't recommend them but as for agm batteries, assuming you have a harley, the oem harley batteries are my favorite so far on how long they can stay working and plus they can be revived if they drain a bit, better then the lithium ones at least. But maybe someone else will comment on a brand they prefer to lead you in a better direction.

Both batteries will work well. I have a Road Glide with 2 LED kits and an upgraded stereo, and I haven't had any issues with the HD Lithium battery. I chose it for the 5-year warranty and battery hibernation feature, which is helpful when I can't use a trickle charger. In Colorado, the battery needs to warm up (leave your accessory on for about 20 seconds, then turn the bike off, and it will start up). It's important to note that LiPo and Li Ion batteries pose different risks. I have a bike with each type of battery, there isn't enough difference either way performance-wise. I agree with Dasha, unless you're aiming for weight savings, stick with AGM batteries because they cost twice as much as standard batteries. Not worth the added risk for the "cool points.",
