This was so fun! And I'm always happy when I get to beat Daniel at something :P I'm glad you love Lies of Locke Lamora, looks like it's time for Red Seas Under Red Skies 👀 Age of Madness is better than the first series for me as well! That trilogy blew me away last year I don't go back and watch my old videos often so it's crazy to see how much this list has changed over the last 4 years!

Haha I definitely think my taste aligns more with you than Daniel albeit he has given me some fantastic recommendations! Red Seas Under Red Skies will definitely happen in 2024! Age of Madness is in my top 3 series of all-time. Masterpiece! I don't blame you for not going back to your old videos. I have only been on this platform for 2 years and I cringe at my old videos haha!

@@libraryofaviking I know there was no chance of it, but since you asked the question "Are Merphy Napier's Favourite Series Worth Reading?" I kept wondering if you'd just end this with "No! Don't listen to her!" Viking stirring up drama per usual. 🙃

Yeah do a reaction to mike's favorite fantasy series to complete the video reaction trilogy. Booktubers like Merphy, Daniel, & you inspire me to push reading more books. That said i'm still not at that level, and im just reading one book at a time, instead of multitasking with two books. Not to mention I'm a slow reader.

Abercrombie is the greatest. I like the other series you touched on, but that's the only one on my top 3. Then again my tastes line up with Daniel more than Murphy. My TBR is currently finishing Malazan, all of Sun Eater, the two sequels to Gunmetal Gods, and all of Gentlemen Bastards.

If you love beautiful writing, it's worth reading rothfuss just for that. the story itself is interesting and of course it's annoying the 3rd book might not ever come out, but I still feel I am a more enriched person for having read what there is, so just do it!

I kind of hate that LOTR is expected to be on best/top fantasy series list. I absolutely love fantasy but I'm that rare person who didn't enjoy LOTR, so it would never ever make a top list for me and people would hate me for that. I love watching you compare other booktubers favorites to yours and how they influenced your reading.

You're definitely not alone in this thinking. I didn't enjoy LOTR all that much either. I do think it deserves respect for its influence and longevity but it would never be in a top list for me either.

This is one of the highest compliments a booktuber can get! Unfortunately, I rarely enjoy humorous books but glad you do! You should check out Discworld, The Blacktongue Thief, Kings of the Wyld, Murderbot and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy if you enjoy humour!

So glad you mentioned Mike because so many BookTubers I'm reluctant to consider the book opinions of because I disagree with them on real-life opinions which become apparent in what they read. I like Merphy for being fairly neutral in this regard (though many of her followers strike me as quite extreme), but I stopped following Daniel due to his WoT TV series shilling, which was really egregious in my opinion. Mike, on the other hand, is a BookTuber who seems very fair and rational and a great influence for books that have opened up new interests for me. Also, I'd like to mention PetrikLeo as well. I love how he words his reviews, and his real-life opinions don't seem to influence his reading choices too much. I've discovered some real gems through him.

Great vid and you along with the mentioned booktubers have introduced me to soooo many awesome fantasy books, so thanks man. Please read Kingkiller, its the exception of the rule for reading unfinished series. Its too good not to read. I think I am the only person who loves The First Law more even though I believe Age of Madness is better written. I will die on the hill that San Dan Glockta is in the top 3 fantasy characters ever written.

I don't think that The Lord of the Rings should necessarily be recommended to everyone for their first fantasy series, but there's also no reason not to start with it, especially for fans of the films or for somebody who just has a particular interest in Tolkien's world. Middle Earth was my first dive into epic fantasy, and that's probably the case for countless fantasy fans.

I'll take some heat on your behalf. The Fellowship of the Ring is shit. Its opening chapters are boring as cheddar. It tells instead of shows. The movie is far better. The Two Towers and Return of the King are only interesting when it's Frodo, Sam & Gollum on screen. Everything else is dull as marsh mud. Never read the books. Never got past Fellowship.
@MagusMarquillin

It tells many things rather then show, but it tells really damn well as befits a book, still evoking powerful imagery. Show don't tell is more of a film maxim, and even then it's not always a hard rule. And I'm not sure why the heat is on his behalf when he said he loved it. Cheddar cheese is also far from boring. 🤤

@MagusMarquillin . Just my opinion. Not shared by the vast majority of Fantasy readers I now and therefore is more than likely misguided. I tried 3 times to get through the book, and I realised the only reason I was persevering was it's reputation. When I saw the great Andy Serkis read the Fellowship on Audible I thought this was it. Andy 'bloody Precious' Serkis. But even he couldn't help me through. I fell asleep during Gandalf's rendition of his visit to the white tower to visit Saruman. I'm obviously wrong. Obviously. But I stand by the cheddar thing.

I would say that most of the series she does mention are great except for two. 1 Harry Potter(for me worst series ever) 2. Anything by Brandon Sanderson. Simply do not care for his writing style.
