I feel like I kind of grew out of them at a certain point. As a teen and young 20-something I loved them. But as I got older the idea of group content got less appealing and in-game achievements got less rewarding. I mostly enjoy single player games that either focus on story, strategy or exploration. That and what first really pushed me away was the feeling of having to play at scheduled intervals after having to work, cook, clean, etc, the last thing I wanted to do was sit down for a set 3 hours to raid.

This video hits home with me, I used to play games easily for 14 hours a day on weekends and for 8-10 hours on weekdays through my middle and high school years. I loved every second of it but it absolutely destroyed me mentally as I got older, I had no drive for the real world l, I had crippling social anxiety and after finishing high school with no ambitions it just put me into a deep deep depression- that depression resulted in me trying to take my own life....after that I woke up and decided things needed to change I got out and socialized, I got a job l, I worked out and in doing this I felt so much happier.- fast forward 4 years I'm married, I have 2 beautiful daughters, my own house and a great job. I still play games but we're talking 2 hours on the weekends now and I joke about being a video game boomer now since I just get smacked around by the kids in my lobby. many of us have been there and to an extent, moving away from MMOs doesn't just magically solve this, but it does help a lot, it's just something you have to be aware that you can fall back into because of how you conditioned yourself into this position too and from what you've been saying, you've been both thinking about where you stand and taking action to change some of that, which is good.. This is what a lot of people could also do even if it seems very hard at first. I can say this much, moving over to single player games has been one of the best decisions I've made because it took me out of that trap of the MMOs time sink, but it didn't magically solve all my problems and made me sink into some single player games, because this is constant, you don't just get better and move on and that's it, if only life were so simple, but the thing I've realized is that there's a lot of truth to the notion of getting out of your comfort zone and this is a tricky piece of advice as I've found it, because I genuinely think that you can throw this one on someone at the worst time and make them think you're throwing them some workaholism bs their way, implying to them that it's wrong to be comfortable, without getting them to understand of some more important parts of that quote that don't get said, like backsliding into bad habits, something that can only get worse with time and result even in isolation and feeling withdrawn.

And real life is what matters at the end of the day. I am married and have 3 kids and i get stressed when i cant play games and i get stressed when i cant provide for my family. Wow, this actually really helped me put something I was confused about into perspective. Tekken... I jumped onto the Tekken band waggon with Tekken 7 when it was released on PC (I'd played Tekken as a kid back on the PS1 but was just button mashing) It took me 3 years to "git gud" and I did. Very good, I became Raijin with Kazuya, argubly the hardest character to play well with in Tekken at a decent enough level. Remember, this is coming from no prior Tekken experience (of merit). I put so much time and effort into learning Tekken, it just... Clicked with me. I tried many characters but there was something about Kazuya I loved and I wanted to use him and main him, though everyone on the internet and friends who were into Tekken said don't pick Kazuya when you're new to Tekken. Fast forward to around 4 months ago. I had uninstalled the game probably 10 times. I began rage quitting a lot of matches, winning wasn't fun, losing obviously wasn't fun. Something was very different with my relationship with this game I used to have so much fun with, I recognized that I didn't like the game anymore, (it was mostly due to changes they made to the game and OP characters they started releasing which just felt so pay to win, this started my downward spiral I believe) yet I was unable to stop playing it. Everytime I would stop playing I was in a terrible mood, angry mostly. I wasn't enjoying myself AT ALL. And still, I couldn't stop. I had literal talks with myself about stopping playing it. I uninstalled it and said right that's it. No more Tekken 7, forever. 2 weeks later, the game is reinstalled and I'm back at it. Hating myself. I didn't actually know this was an option till 4 months ago but I removed the game from my steam account, I no longer own the game. (amazing that Valve give you the option to do this) I haven't played Tekken 7 since, I still boot up emulated Tekken 5 or 6 to get those fingers twitching (Oh boy is Kazuya so much fun when you know what you're doing) and though I technically lost money by giving up ownership of the game, it was the best decision I've made in gaming. I still didn't really know what it was, I've been addicted to TONS of games in my life, but I've NEVER been addicted to a game I hate. That's was so bizarre to me, till now. Glad I finally have some insight into what the actual heck happened lol Will I play Tekken 8? Yes. Will I become addicted? Probably. Will it get to the stage of hating the game yet still playing it? Maybe. But atleast I know what to do if that happens, just accept it and stop it. It is honestly the best decision.

The notion that you spend your time gaming to me is fully normal. To me its more about personality on how it will impact you. For example, I dont see how being addicted to workout or working is better. I had a boss, she had 3 kids, all of them hated her cause she was pushing for "achiving career goals" and while doing so she got constantly relocated. From Asia, to US to EU then back to EU. The kids had no saying in it. Then she started to complain that she hates how nobody in her family loves her. And she spent the best of her youth overtime working... also, I have a friend who we went to kung-fu classes together, they were there 4 hours a day and now their joints are fucked and they are not 30 yet... its fucking sad. This is the thing, if you are a person that is keen to being "addicted" to things, it does not really matter what you do in life, you will do it to an obsessive level. And at the end, everyone can do what they want to do. Some things are just more socially accepted. Thats all.

I'm 33 yo, work as a technician but have a masters degree in biology with great distinction. I've always been able to put in tons of effort in things both RL as in-game ... if ... I know for sure that putting in the effort gets me decent results. I was great at school; you put in the effort and you'll be guaranteed the excellent grade. My classmates would argue about who'd get to be my partner(s) for projects ... since I often did all the work myself because I hate lackluster stuff. Back then I was always 'work before play'. At university my professor and his assistant stole my extra work that I did in hope of getting a doctorate position, I couldn't find a job without already having prior experience in said job, I went to teach but got stuck with a "mentor" who's selfmade course was completely wrong and when I tried to correct it she got mad and sabotaged my "training" so I didn't get the teaching degree. As a scientist I would have had a job in a laboratory, publish or perish, have limited exercise throughout the day, little free time if I went for a true career, ... . Never had any luck with dating at all. I've always been single. So in the end I went for a technician's job. I do the 8 hours a day in less than 6 AND because I get to make my own planning and hours, that's all I work AND I earn more than I would at a basic bachelor job. I also have my company technician's van that I use throughout the week for personal stuff so I don't need to use my personal car a lot. I have zero stress, run circles around even my bosses and solve even the hardest things with my eyes closed. My past negative experiences with the RL world took away the ambition I once had and nowadays I just pour that into my hobbies. I bought my own penthouse appartement, made a gym room and work out every other day ... getting really into shape after this past year. And for the rest I mostly play games, read books, watch anime and series, go ride my bike, walk in nature reserves, go swim, ... . The only thing I truly mis is a girlfriend with whom I could share my passions ... but ... in the end that type of girl is rather rare and probably already taken. Years of being on payed dating sites taught me that I'm not a top 20% man hence women don't see me as a first pick AND I myself don't want to be someone's consolation prize. So I quit dating after a lot of disappointing experiences. As an INTJ I have a hard time opening up to people in RL until I get used to them; rather the opposite from when I'm online. I often wonder: "instead of leveling my in-game characters and gaming accounts ... maybe I should put that effort into leveling my RL character". It was the main reason why, as soon as I bought my own place, I got my gym room and started working out consistently. Indeed ... with only an hour to hour and half of efficient workouts and a few supplements to take daily, you will get great results within 6 months ... I can fully recommend anyone to start weight lifting. After only a year of watching what I eat, but not needing to totally stop enjoying anything, and doing those weight lifting workouts ... I'm close to my athletic optimum and went from XXL to L. I never imagined being able to achieve that. I like the achievements I can see in the amount of weight I lift, my overall condition, size of cloths, shape in the mirror ... but ... to me I never felt that supposed dopamine hit from working out. I wouldn't do any of it if it wasn't giving me results. I do use that time to listen to new music on Spotify and add it to my lists. As it stands ... I don't need nor want a harder job, since it would mean more money but less time to enjoy said money. My friends who now have careers and families of their own, rarely have time left for their own hobbies. We also rarely come together anymore; especially after covid the routine get togethers have stopped happening. I do mis that time when my university peers and I had lots of activities together; after graduating we kept going on weekends a few times a year. Used to... . I guess it's all about finding the right balance in life THAT YOU YOURSELF ARE ... happy ... OR RATHER ... CONTENT WITH. I think to me the only thing I truly lack in life is a female companion. We only live once, we should aim to do what we like to with the limited time we've got. It that means mostly enjoying MMO's go for it ;-)

I've realized that online gaming for most people is a bad thing, and it sure was for me. I used to play PoE 16 hours a day, because it gave me a sense of status for being on the top of the game, but once I closed the game I felt like a total loser, a worthless pile of garbage, which made me think "is this really what my life is gonna be forever?". Once I finally quit online gaming for good as each online game made my real life obsolete for the status I was gaining ingame, I finally started making progress in real life and not feeling depressed and worthless. It's easy for streamers/youtubers to say that "It's a good thing that a loser can play on an even playing field online." when they already have so much money that they don't need to do a day of work ever again unlike normal people.

Definitely grew out of them as I got older. Comes a point in life where you have to decide whether you want to live a productive life, or a degenerate goblin life playing MMOs. To me a productive life was more satisfying, so I stopped playing them seriously maybe 7 or 8 years ago. Too hard now to find the time with work, gym, family, miscellaneous commitments, etc. That's why I love these videos - I still get a slice of the MMO life without actually having to put in the hours. Not to mention Asmongold is a legend too.

@@JohnSmith-sl6uq Personally, I have that rule for myself that I always do important stuff like paperwork or cleaning house/go to the gym before I game when I'm off. Gives me peace of mind when I inevitably collapse on my sofa later. lol And it works quite well. And when I get a call from friends I make it a point to always socialise first as to not get into that cycle where you put off everything indefinitely. It's really simple and some days I fail (I had night shift recently and spent the last three days holed up as I was tired lol) but once you get into that routine it's actually quite nice. A few of my friends have a similar problem as you described and to me they always seem very phlegmatic. Like no drive other than get up and game. When some come over they always comment on how nice my apartment looks even though all I do is clean one room after the other ever two days so I'm done faster. As with everything it's about how you pace yourself as to not get overwhelmed. lol

As much psychology and science I've studied, you are absolutely correct that being void of "want" allows you discover more of what you're capable of wanting. That's actually an ancient perspective. A Coptic text from Egypt that speaks about being "void of want" is the "Prayer of Thanksgiving" found in the Coptic Gnostic Library. This text, which is believed to date back to the 4th century CE, contains the following passage: "I give thanks to you, O Father, because you have made me perfect in your truth and have granted me to be void of want in all things, having received from you the fullness that is yours."

Then I moved to the States and I am having a good time (I have to socalize a lot though) Achievement Unlocked. -Girl/boyfriend expansion: Got married for 2 years and shit went downhill, now I wanna be single forever. Achievement unlocked. -I don't like sports or physical activities so I am not gonna pretend I am gonna be all fitness. Sometimes I go jogging with my friends lol. Achievement unlocked. I did pretty much all he said, left everything behind to pursue that lifestyle and to be honest not all that made me happy; some of those things actually gave me a massive headache and mental issues. Most of those achievements he mentioned backfired in my case and made me feel more miserable because there's a damn finish line that I am not able to cross yet and IDK if it is related to the sexuality/race factors. 4 years after leaving my homecountry sometimes I would like to be in my early 20's when I ordered pizza and played with my guild till late. People have to find out what it is that actually makes them happy. But saying that once you get a girlfriend, get a high paying job, buy a house, socialize, etc... you will feel more rewarded is not very accurate. IDK but I watching Asmongold's video "Why I live a simple life" helped me out a lot more to understand what I want than watching this video of a person with a perfect lifestyle.

The issue with addiction - Asmon said that "I was 5-6 years old and I was the same, it isn't the games it's just the person" - but we're literally talking about children who have no self control and a medium that causes a specific addictive reaction to happen. If you play sports you don't get addicted to it, if you play D&D you don't get addicted to it, there's something about the gaming medium that can cause a dopamine hit to happen with a clear frequency which is also low effort (The more you have to work towards the dopamine, the better your willpower). I was similar to Asmongold in terms of the age I started gaming, and now I've been gaming for the last 24 years - in the end I don't think that children should play games, at the very least not before they're 14 years old and their personality/character has developed enough so that PC games wouldn't be a prevalent part of their lives. Would you like your children to be similar to Asmongold (but just without the money/fame cuz Asmon is the exception in terms of his situation rather than the rule)?

I've quit MMO's several times in my life 🤣 Being married, with kids, and my spouse does not play or like video games, makes it tough. I admit that MMO's are conducive to sucking major hours of one's life. Are you an adult, do you still live with your parents and play MMO's? Do you feel like a hamster on that wheel? Fun is part of it, but it can also be "chasing that carrot." Perhaps it's time to rethink things over... perhaps have a better "balance."

Completely agree, best way to stop an addiction is to never start it. You are not special you are not going to beat it, it will kill you. Any smoker knows it will kill them, they still can't quit, not even 5% of smokers manage to quit for any significant amount of time, and given enough time even those will start again, because there will always be something missing.

Tho now since classic got re released I've had so much fun again. I'm playing wrath actively and leveling every class just because I WANT to. Im playing with people that I met in the first week of the re release. Ofcourse I'm taking breaks now playing other games (like Valorant, Elden Ring, Stardew Valley etc.) and it's one so much good. BUT In November last year I got Kicked out from my parents (I'm 19) and had to get myself a home myself. I've never been more stressed and playing didn't make it better. So people. If you don't enjoy a game. Just take a break. It's not gonna kill you. Play something else or go do stuff IRL. If yiu enjoy it. Monitor it. Yes it's a lot of work but it's necessary. When you are NOT gaming, I find that your thoughts constantly go to those places where you have problems in your life. As an balanced adult, you are supposed to process your problems in a way where you turn those challenges in to hope, or a plan or acceptance. When you ARE gaming you are not doing that work, and when all that processing of your problems accumulate, as your brain has been preoccupied, all your challenges hits you at once, whenever you exit the game. I think the biggest problem with computer games in general, is that you don't process life, and you need to do that constantly to function and have a grasp on life.

I've done nothing but think about the last 20 or so years since we had grown more apart and how much time I have wasted in front of a computer playing mainly RuneScape, but also Guildwars. That is time I can never get back, I know it's well over 10,000 hours (more than a nonstop 365 day year). Ive spent most of my life playing alone instead of being around those who mattered and really cared about me. I've lost an entire summer, maybe two not even stepping outside. I have decided to stop playing games and try to spend as much time with those I care about from now on. I can't say it's the best choice for everyone, but I wish I never picked up my first mmo.
