Well, since becoming almost totally disabled due to an autoimmune disease...I have gone completely as organic and natural as possible...no micas, etc. my soaps sell well, because my customers are looking for that. But this is what I love about the soap making world...there is something for everyone. We are not necessarily in competition with each other because we do things differently - both with ingredients and with artistry.

Love this comment. I keep hearing I need to sell my soaps. Been making them years now and giving away for free. Well that's way too expensive for me to continue doing anymore. However I've been extremely to scared to due to so many other soapers that actually are selling saying that there's soooooo much competition out there in soaping world. So it's completely scared me. I can't keep giving away for free. But scared to sell as well. I'm glad you said that everyone makes them different. I have totally noticed that as well. It's really cool.

I made my first soap last weekend and it is SOLID. Like I can defend my house w/ it as a blunt object. But it is snow white, just soy oil and coconut oil in a 50/50 ratio. Basically I just wanted to make a soap regardless of the end product; just take that step. My plastic mold was destroyed...forgot to line it...doah. But it is an awesome soap and does its job which is to cut the axle grease from my hands. Anyway, long way to say thank you for the inspiration to do it, and try it out and see if I like it.

I think it just depends on what you're going for, the natural colours being more muted can be an advantage, I wanted a peach colour, so I mixed a red clay with a yellow clay, in theory would be orange, but because of that more subtle colouring of the clays, I got the peach colour that I was expecting.

I have only changed 1 thing about the way I make soap from Grandma's method, 2 if you count I use molds and she didn't. I use fresh lard. She save burned bacon grease not fit for seasoning beans and if she boiled a piece of beef and there was a thick layer of fat, she put that in her soap fat bucket. Her soap fat wasn't even good enough to grease a cow's sore hoof. She poured her lye water over fat just melted enough that the trashy stuff stayed in the bottom of the can when she poured it in the granite dish pan she used to make it in. She cut it when it set up and next day warped the pan gently to pop it loose. It set on the back porch covered with an old day until needed.

I don't use a lot of colors in mine. I use the plain recipe I learned from Grandma over 60 years ago. A lard, lye and water basic soap. I do add things at trace sometimes. A little lemon essential oil and sprinkle a little dried lemon rind on top or grind up some oats real fine and mix them in; the last one is my favorite grubby hands farm soap. If I get distracted and mess it up, it goes in my homemade laundry detergent bucket; no biggie.

Thank you for another straight up video Most soap I make has no color added. I have used micas (sent free to me as a sample) and one time used a bit a a green Crayola crayon. That was a conundrum on how to label it. I have also used various spices to be "natural" but most feel a bit scratchy. Most of my customers really don't care if it is colored or don't want colorants used. They want a great bar of soap for a decent price. That's what I provide.

I only use natural colorants and I Iove it! And even if it does fade over time, it just goes to show that there are no preservatives on the soap and a lot of people are now aware of that, surprisingly! Also, between natural colorants (and essential oils), those that are chemically produced in a lab, natural colorants poses a far lesser possibility of skin irritations and allergies, that the FDA does not even require it labeled on the ingredient list, how about that? But I like being transparent to my customers so I do add whatever natural colorant was used on the soap. I see it as a plus and not a disadvantage at all. Thanks for this video! :-)
@unclejonssoap

Thanks for your response Jon! I advocate for "if it is not safe to be consumed, don't put it on your skin." I think transparency in labeling is also a must in every product even natural ones, but the funny thing is, hand made, natural soaps do not actually require labeling by the FDA. Every individual has the right to be informed of any possible irritants for them to decide if it is good or bad for them. But I digress. :-) Looking forward to more of your videos, I learn a lot of practical, business tips from you! Thank you!

I did find you get a pretty good color from clay if you add your clay to the lye water. My best result was using matcha green tea powder, that gets a nice dark forest green. Gatta do your research on that one though, what I've found is that maintaining colors in naturals has more to do with when and how you add it.... atleast as far as I've learned....

Honestly, I don't really think that anyone is saying that Natural Colorants are "better" than Mica's, etc... It really all falls down to what your Market is, and what your Customer is looking for. I have sensitive skin. I always had to be careful when buying certain store products, and make sure that they were Dye Free and Fragrance Free or I would break out in a rash. After starting with making my own Homemade Soaps, my skin has felt better than it has for years. That is why I chose to go Natural. But I'm not opposed to Mica's and Fragrance Oils, because there are people out there who want that, just as there are people out there who only want Natural Ingredients (whether it be due to a similar situation to mine, or just personal preference). Neither is "better" than the other, and they both have their own place and market.
@unclejonssoap

There's actually a certain crowd who does say that anything "natural" is better just because it's natural...lol. Colors, essential oils, etc... Many also claim those things are safer as well. My only point was for that crowd.. basically letting them (and people who aren't sure) know that it just isn't true. I'll be doing a video soon that sort of explains in more detail with an example 😁 But in most cases, it's all about preference like you said.

Uncle Jon's i use it all- Ground veggies, Mineral Micas... and sometimes add lakes for density. B/c you’re right.... Most of the dried ground veggie colors are very thin and pastel-like. , Micas too. But then again- I love the prep-work of soap making. I make cosmetics also- so the coloring part is one of my favorite parts/ so I personally LOVE getting the colors all mixed up. But to your point it’s just preference. One or the other isn’t necessarily BETTER in any way. It really is just preference. I’m allergic to yellow #5 & 6... so I’m cognizant others may be too. Great videos! Fun subject! "Natural" is a fun subject. Nobody would be healthy from eating a wild "natural" carrot, same as cold process soap is made using NaOH, many fancy oils are "laboratory" made, most oils are industrially processed. I'd argue that "homemade natural" should mean "I've grown everything and made every ingredient in my home, using tools I've made myself and nothing is store bought". ie. almost no marketed "natural" product is really natural. "Natural" is almost always a marketing point and nothing else if it's really investigated. But I'd say anyone doing their first soap batch do it for the reason "do it my self is 'better' or more fun" or simply "will the end product be better than what I can buy form the local store", while still using "non natural" ingredients. There is no actual need to claim "natural" if you don't want to use "natural" for marketing. It's not impossible to make a cold process soap with all ingredients home made, growing your own oil source, cold pressing it and creating NaOH at home, it would take some serious education and time, ignoring time spent it would be really cheap, including time spent it's super expensive. Everyone to their own, do what you want and if adding a certain ingredient mixture makes you feel or "measure" a better result is fine, but in this subject there is only one truth. Generally mixing lipids and lye makes soap, generally the rest is subjective feeling which is important too since that is the main commercial part of all commercially viable products in this and bordering subjects. Personally I'm currently totally sold on making my first batch, waiting for mail delivery of ingredients takes forever. :-D Great channel and "sober" thinking!

I sell my products on a local scale. Last year, I had several requests to make both an all organic soap as well as vegan friendly soap. Considering the amount of requests Ireceived, I figured it would be worth it to make a small production run. So I make 4 batches of each. I figure up the costs and the organic I end up having to raise the price by 75% and the vegan soap I had to triple the price. This had me very worried as I didn't see a good return coming. The next time I went to market, I almost could not move these soaps. Even people I distinctly remember making these requests weren't willing to pay the extra price for them. One lady went so far as to make a scene about it was ridiculous that I actually wanted to make some kind of profit and that I was fleecing everyone. I offered to show this woman my cost analysis for each and every product I made, but she refused. So anyway, now I'm sitting on several batches of all natural vegan soap and all organic ingredients soap that 8 cannot sell. Oh sure, I might sell one bar every time I go to market (once a month) if I'm lucky, but usually, nada. It's been 14 months since I made them, 12 months since I released them, and I haven't sold a single bar 9f it in the past 7 months. Needless to say, I will not be making these again. When I go back to market in July, I'll be discounting them to below cost because all they're doing is taking up space.

Vegan, considering the hoops I have to go through to source vegan friendly supplies, I originally priced at $20 a bar, but have reduced them to $12 a bar just so I can get rid of them. I'll actually be losing 50 cents a bar at that price. Here soon, i may just cut my losses and give them away as promotional items (with a label change of course) or using them myself. I don't recommend the vegan soap as you may be able to sell them to 2 or 3 individuals every few months, but take my advice, it's not worth it. Everyone I've ever had wanting to buy my vegan soaps have wanted detailed information on WHERE I sourced my products. One even went so far as to berate me for not making my own lye.

@@bloombyfaith40 $12 per handmade soap bar seems reasonable. If they don't like the price you can always point them in the direction of your local Walmart.

@@os2841 I've since gotten away from soap making. This channel has even changed from what it was when I was doing that. 2 years ago, I was making a decent profit off of $5 a bar soap. A lot has changed since then. I lost everything to yet another hurricane (Laura in 2020) and I haven't been able to get my equipment again. I would love to get back into it, but right now it's just not in the works.
