However, funny thing...if you live in the center of one of the Special Economic Zones - you're most likely safe from these. They don't want bad publicity on the global news networks from a building falling down in Beijing or Shanghai. Also if you are government official- most likely also fine. Government buildings are probably the best constructed in China. In America...politicians lick rich people's asses in order to get campaign funding. In China- exact opposite - rich people lick the government's ass to keep their business, money, head, family...you don't see many billionaires successfully speaking out about the government in China. DogeCoin can do whatever he wants....along with the rest of the billionaires who literally have most of the power in the USA.

Not just in construction. When I was a mechanic in RAEME, we built more solid temporary structures out of heavy canvas and cinder blocks for our theatre workshop to assist in the then UNAMET transition in East Timor than some of the shonky arse buildings I've seen in China. You have high rises where the cement and facia has the consistency and structural integrity of wet sand. It just crumbled in your hand. Temporary structures, mind you. Designed to be thrown up and taken down with an hour and a platoon of soldiers like us working on it. One of my friends bought real estate in Shenzhen and she ending up in hospital with an eye injury because a 'brick' and plaster load bearing strut just blew out and sprayed her face with debris. Required 16 stitches and she had to wear an eye patch for 2 months. She had a patio on her 12th floor, but she refused to go out on it and lean on the railings because she just couldn't trust it. In America a common horror trope was accepting a dare, winning a contest etc.. The person or persons had to stay the entire night and survive in a haunted house. Having been a cement finisher and a form setter I can make a few observations. I started as a laborer, and worked my way up. Eventually I was running about three Crews. Here in Southern California when we have work we have standards. Depending on where your job is it's either going to be City county state or federal standards and guidelines. First of all your concrete a good mix for a slab would be 5 and 1/2 SACK 3/4 in Rock. That means five and a half sacks of concrete PER YARD MIXED WITH SAND AND 3/4 INCH ROCK. If I were to pour the slabs for my home I would want it to be at least 6 SAC. The concrete being used there appears to be a very poor mix. Possibly 3to 4 sack mix or less!!!; What I've seen for the moldings and homes they use basically styrofoam covered with the black paper and chicken wire that they use for plastering. I'm not sure what the technical name is but that's what it looks like. Concrete will not stick to Wood it may appear to but it will fall off. I would definitely not consider it as a bond worthy of structural integrity. Rebar should not be used when it's Rusty as the oxidation will keep it from bonding with the concrete. If you built a pillar with Rusty rebar it's just a matter of time before it works its way out and repels the concrete in chunks.

My observations are much the same from fairly extensive travel through China. Also the process starts with the client finance (top-dollar), which goes to a middle-man (spiv in a suit who sticks his pork-snout in and grabs a big slice for 'fuck all effort') who deals it out to a (cronie) builder (another big profit slice), who then sources 'rock-bottom trades to build it with whatever funds are left. This forces the working-man to cut corners in order to just make a living wage. They then ship the same formula to Australia, with shipping container loads of shit products that don't meet the NCC, bribe their way through construction, use 745 visa workers and advertise the accomodation straight back to China as 'Sold off Plan'. And there's my Rant, Willie :)

Is it wise to build in this manner? I don't think so, but this is not a true capitalistic economy. If it were you wouldn't see this occurring because the amount of money wasted is beyond staggering. But I wouldn't not attribute this to greed and corruption. It's not that at all.

When I was around 18 I went on a trip with my parents to England (I am from the US). At one point we were on a tour bus driving through an area with fields and in the distance we're sheep and I thought it was beautiful and it must be great living around here. But then I realized people in the area are used to it and probably don't even notice it. They would be thinking about what groceries to buy or that meeting at work that was going to be at least one hour longer than needed. That is the difference between the people new to China and those who have been there a while. The ones who have been there a while are not dazzled by the beauty and "newness" and see everything else that is going on.

To be more precise this is more clearly an indication of ''Socialism for Big Business'' the same way the banks in America were saved from financial ruin and bankruptcy with citizen tax dollar income when pure capitalist ideology dictates that they should have went bankrupt and made space for new potential market growth and development. The USA provided socialism and free welfare for the big banks but fails to even provide true free universal healthcare that is free from money grubbing corporate influence. This has nothing to do with actual pure capitalist or Communist ideology and this is simply welfare for big business or the powerful. This happens everywhere in the world although probably not in the same fashion as we see here with this housing bubble or the financial markets. Seriously people are far too easy to blame communism or capitalism for x reason but the truth is it is more easily explained by the exploitative nature of power dynamics. There is almost no difference between the far right capitalist argument and the far left communist argument. A coin has two sides, if you think it should always be heads (capitalist) then you're an idiot and if you believe it should always be tails (communist) then you're an equally big idiot. A balanced society rolls on both sides and the best society actually knows how to balance a coin on its delicate side which makes it roll like crazy down the path of least resistance creating a boom and golden age but you'll never get that roll if you believe it has to be heads or tails all the time and force it into that position because some powerful elite has placed his bet on that side. Imho thus the best society is one that knows how to balance communism with capitalism (or vica versa) but that would mean you'd focus on the middle class and not on the powerful and elite when it is they who are entrenched in their positions and will not yield to any productive chance that might threaten it. Peace

+BrutusAlbion Eh the only right thing you pointed out was the "socialism for big business". This is an indicator of the lack of a free market, and thus true capitalism. The first problem I see with your post is that you are trying to make an equivalency between communism and capitalism, even in the extremes... to which there really is none as the extreme refers to a complete form rather than a watered down one. This brings us to the situation with China. I get the impression your use of "communism" in your argument comes from mentioning the communist party or China itself as it was mentioned above... but there is something very important to realize about China. It is not communist. Communism requires the complete state control of not only production, but consumption. The moment they privatized business, even when its filtered through their party, it stopped being real communism. In fact labor was never truly "liberated", the rule of labor over capital never happened. Communism also had a different name in the past, it was simply called international socialism. Communism as a name was used because many felt "socialism" as a name was losing its appeal. So is China then international socialist? In practice, as it relates to what communist ideals are? Not so much. China is then closer to what NAZI Germany is. They are national socialist. The state or rather single "political party" in this case controls everything, and privatized business, or at least the big ones, are closely linked to those loyal to the party if not the party members themselves. So what you would be saying is that the half way point between national socialism and capitalism is ideal. I don't necessarily agree with that, but an argument can be made for it... as opposed to saying communism and capitalism which there isnt. Going back to capitalism. Capitalism is great, however its meant to work well with a free market. If you have no free market, then all you get is cronyism or some form of "business based socialism" which you accurately called out. Free trade and the free market were also intended to work on an intra-national or pan-national scale, not on a global scale. Intra-national means within a nation, and pan-national implies working within a set of similar nations. International free trade cannot actually work long term, as the nations that play by different rules can always cause a massive imbalance in how trade works. China is a great example of this. Near slave labor in some parts of the nation, government subsidizing industry, no environmental controls...ect a nation that doesnt have slave labor, has heavy environmental and safety regulations, little to no subsidies for big business will not be able to compete. This is why you need capitalism and a free market but ONLY within the confines of an intra-national or pan-national structure. Globalism, be it from communist international socialism or faux capitalism, simply cannot work long term.

I don't think you understand my argument at all. You seem to be a one side coin man from my current perspective and I think you don't understand the true necessity and existence of communism since you only focus on capitalism. The fact is, you cannot get rid of communism entirely the same way you cannot get rid of capitalism entirely either. Let me point out that even in a pure capitalist society you'd be bringing home the bacon to your children and spouse and you'd be diverting resources to unproductive members who are in need of food, clothing and shelter without any ''material or often emotional reward'' mechanism to compensate that expenditure other than your belief that it is the ''right'' thing to do. Going up in the communist scale simply means you shift the burden of communalism from the nuclear family higher up in organisational superstructure. From nuclear family to extended family to tribal societal level to even national level. We often call communism when this communalism is extended towards the national level and international communism when it extends to an international level however communism still exists everywhere and at all times in one form or another. It is not something that you can eradicate with some form of ''pure capitalism'' since they are two sides of the same coin as I mentioned earlier. The only difference lies where you apply each principle up the socio-economic organisational super-structure. The same goes for capitalism, the purer forms of capitalism simply refer to how resources are gathered in the hierarchical superstructure of socio-economics where the more purest form of capitalism focuses on the individuals earning potential proportional to its productivity however this is often not the actual case in capitalism where the owner of the productive means will try to squeeze the maximum amount of profit out of every individual regardless of their actual effective input and profitable wealth generated. If they can get away with appropiating a larger share of profit from their productive input they will always try to get away with it. The only safety mechanism in such a case are Unions which seek to protect the individuals earning capacity to more fairly distribute the production. However Unions are often seen as socialist in nature. One could easily argue that they are actually capitalist in nature since they seek to protect the individuals earning capacity proportional to its wealth generation. I hope you can see from my argumentation that it is not as simple as to simply claim that a ''more pure capitalism is needed'' to be the solve all fix all problems. A proper balance which benefits the population is necessary and not one that caters only to big business. We are in dire need of a more pure form of capitalism, with this I agree with you on. The way the situation was handled with the financial crisis is a good representative on how pure capitalism is no longer in effect, however the same can be said for communism or communalism where individuals of the same society look after another persons misfortune. I'm not advocating to needlessly support the lazy but I am advocating for adequate health, education and living standards for all individuals who partake in our society. Some call this socialism, I simply call it decency. It is our great moral decay in modern society that focuses on the misgiving of people and tells them that it is their personal fault for falling away. Another good way that communism actually works can be seen in the general practice of fire fighters, police, the army, and other general services such as road infrastructure or watermanagement which are not handled by private companies since they will often and quickly lead to massive corruptive and power imbalances which can be exploited. Pure capitalism would work perfectly fine if people weren't motivated by trivial things such as power and greed however the same can be said for communism. Both systems will fail if pushed to far to one extreme side. One cannot underestimate the hunger of the human soul for power and influence. Both systems work in ''theory'' but both systems fail in ''practice'' because neither system takes into account the neccessity of ''humanity'' properly. I totally agree with your final comment ''International free trade cannot actually work long term, as the nations that play by different rules can always cause a massive imbalance in how trade works. China is a great example of this. Near slave labor in some parts of the nation, government subsidizing industry, no environmental controls...ect a nation that doesnt have slave labor, has heavy environmental and safety regulations, little to no subsidies for big business will not be able to compete.'' It's a very good example of how free trade can be easily undermined by a few annoying git players who are out to game the system. This is why moral decency and appropriate sanctions are necessary to combat such indecent practices. However you cannot effectively combat such practices without some effective form of ''socialism'' or ''communism'' in which a group determines the appropriate laws, sanctions and punishments for the trespassers of such morals that uphold effective free trade. In a completely pure capitalist state there are no restrictions on trade at all and it would lead to a massive amount of mini-china's all over the place trying to game the system until the very system is completely corrupted and destroyed. Just my 2c Peace. P.S Don't get me wrong, I'm not a communist, but I'm neither a capitalist, I believe in the appropriate application of both systems. A balanced approach that focuses on the needs of the people and effective markets is what I aim and aspire for.

Not directly related, but a few years ago I was vacationing in the Bahamas. There was a massive new resort under construction, and the native Bahamians told me that it was all Chinese--construction, financing, ownership. The thing was, the construction crew were kept locked behind heavy barbed fencing, living in shipping containers right on the worksite, and never allowed to leave or to interact with the local population. I kept thinking about the oddity of that, until it occurred to me that those workers were probably North Koreans rented out as slave labor by the Chinese. I wonder if that resort is crumbling into ruins now.

My house was built some time before 1885 so I always tease friends when they call a house built 60 or 70 years ago an "old" house. Looking at this video I get the impression that they are doing a rush job mixing and pouring their concrete on these new houses. I think at some point once the boom slows down or busts they'll start having contractors do better more long term construction. At least I hope so. Personally I'm glad my house is wood rather than concrete. The trees used to build it were all old growth forest and each was several centuries old, so it's quite sturdy wood and hopefully it will still be standing 100 years from now. Sad to see houses in this video falling apart after only 3 years or so.

Your guys channel has helped me to get a better understanding of what it is like inside China, You show the good and bad without being disrespectful towards anyone. Every Country has good and bad areas and citizens. Most all of the people are good and your videos exposes that to the world. Thanks for giving us a real insight and keep going at it.

Darrin Rentruc well first of all, they go overboard to address people's feelings. Which is the flaw in the base comment thread we're talking in now

KZitemUsername Going overboard about peoples feelings is not being disingenuous, What these two guys are doing will only help China. Just seeing these guys walking around in open public eliminates many of the misconceptions people have about China.

Darrin Rentruc it's being disingenuous because no one could possibly care that much about worthless feefees. Idk, I don't like it. Seems dishonest

Well, the reason for the poor quality is very easy to understand. If you would like to read this comment(takes about 5 minutes). Quality is tightly associated with cost and price, it is a universal thing, it holds true for China. Most Chinese recently built houses/apartments are extremely expensive compared to the relatively low local income. In my city, a classic 2nd tier city. The apartment in the edge of the city cost around 2000 USD, while on average people earn around 700 USD. And you may wonder why the hell this market hasn't crashed as they price is insane. Well, the answer is also very easy: controlled and limited residential land supply + traditional culture influence + one-child policy. For most of the cases, lands in China are almost entirely owned by the Government. As an individual citizen, you can't buy land and build a house on it yourself. All the land property have to be transferred by the government from industrial/agricultural to residential. It works like this: the previous owner of the land sells it to the local government at an unbelievable low price while the government selling it to a real-estate company at an unreasonable high level through bidding. So the price per m2 increase from maybe 20USD all the way up to 2000 USD. In this process, tons of money being 'invented', so the local government is able to build all sorts of new infrastructures. You may still be confused who the hell are these people buying these units? In traditional Chinese culture, there is an idiom "成家立业" which means to go get married and start a career. And why this becomes an issue even? In almost all new money country, there is quite an amount of population still lives in poor condition, as a result, parents want their daughter to marry a better/wealthier guy to sustain or reach a good physical life. However, the unique thing about China is that due to the one-child policy, many families choose to give birth to a boy instead of a girl. This created a huge imbalance in terms of gender ratio, according to all sources of statistics, it ranges from 110 to 130 (male: female). Research conducted by a famous university in Shanghai - Tongji Unversity, claims that there are 30m more males than females. And like 99% of the world, marriage is "free market", which means the fewer side is always in favor. Okay, let's get back to our topic why the quality is so poor. Because of the limited supply, lands are expensive. These lands are still bought by real-estate companies because they knew their units will sell. A Chinese man will buy because this is standard for marriage, his girl still leaves if her parents disagree most of the time, despite how much she loves you. However, people's income limited their consumption powers even if every family members helps them. What to do to maximize profit without breakthrough the upper limit? Let's use cheap materials, it cut down costs, and after a few years, the warranty is expired, anything happened (if it is not a big crash or something), a buyer has only the choice to complain but normally nothing bad will happen to the company. In this model, GDP rise, jobs created, money being 'invented' and circulated to boost the emerging markets. I can't tell who wins, but sure its not the normal people!

@@peepopalaber I've no idea how this gonna play, I even don;t know if how long this can sustain. Honestly, I do believe government will order central bank to issue more loans into the market and slowly take the situation under control by stimulating inflation. Or simply issue new currency to wipe out all existing debts like what happened in the 40s-50s.
