Since the first of the year, a pair of Great Horned Owls have slowly made their way down the walking trail towards the site of last year's nest. Today the larger female was hidden from the camera amongst the interior branches of a nearby oak tree (about 100 meters from the 2023 nest site). Since it was clearly smaller in size, the owl in this video is the male of the pair; he spent most of the hour I watched him moving around an area from ~25-150 meters from the former nest. Included in today's action was a recorded hoot and one dive into flight.
Whether this is the same mated pair from last year, hopefully in a month or so these two will choose their 2024 nest site and settle in to bring the world a few more owlets.
