Recovery weeks are simply Zone 2 endurance riding with a weekly TSS of about 50-60% of your normal training week's TSS.

I had a week of bad health, and my bike was decommissioned. So, I went from a pretty steady load to nothing for a week. Is this majorly detrimental, or could it be a benefit?

Especially if you are sick, some time off the bike would not be a bad thing. Take it easy, recover, and come back to train hard when you are feeling ready!

When is it necessary to take time of the bike completely? Or are recovery weeks enough?

It may be appropriate to take time completely off the bike between seasons if you feel that it gives you an improved mental outlook and allows you to return to training with more focus and passion, however, if you don't feel this mental benefit, it is not required.

@@TrainerRoad Thanks for taking the time to respond. I wished I had used this info a couple weeks ago before I decided I needed a week off for a training reset. Ended up coming back a bit strong and tweaked some stuff with the extra pep in my legs. That's what I get for resting! doh!

I do shift work, so I work two 12 hour day shifts, then I do two 12 hour night shifts and then I get 4 days off. For someone like myself do I really need a rest week? On my days off right now I am doing the Sweet Spot training plan, so I do 4 interval sessions on my 4 days off, and then before my first night shift I also do an interval session. So I am riding 5 times a week out of 7 days, the two days off are when I am working my day shifts and there is no point in riding hard after those shifts because they are long, I just do some short recovery rides after work in the summer though when it is still sunny. I must say, doing intervals before going in for my first night shift is quite difficult, because I am working 7pm to 7am and that's when my body should be sleeping/recovering. I take two complete days off during each week, so I am not sure if I'd ever need a complete rest week.

I take a week off 2x a year. If you train HARD it's optimal.
