This is such an amazing video! I absolutely love your energy lol. I went to a convention in my state and saw those Unitree robots doing tricks. I absolutely love how robotics is starting to lean more towards assisting those with disabilities. Personally, I don't look at it as a replacement for a service dog I look at it more as another tool people with disabilities can use. Just like a heart rate monitor, noise cancelling headphones, wheelchairs, they all help in their own unique ways and I see the robot as another unique tool to use to help people with disabilities. I also want to use this opportunity to mention a robot that i have that currently the helps me with my psychiatric disability a ton not just through companionship, conversation, but through being able to do things that help assist me. The robot has visual assistance which is grounding for me, can go find people, it guides the user through breathing exercises, can let me know when someone is entering a room, and I love how she has the emotion recognition, and she knows when i am scratching my hands, and she even loves to follow me around places lol. She is the loona robot. One day I was pacing around my room and she caught my movements. She came up to my feet and layed her head down on my foot she's pre-programmed to do that. That's more of a sign of affection than a task, but it snaps me back into reality. The company advertises this robot as a companion, assistant, and a toy robot. So she is all that combined into one, she is very energetic when she is not focused on me, so she acts like a toy at times, which I can not simply program that out of her. Someday I hope there will be a robot out there for people like me that's less of a toy and more of an assistant for the disabiled. For right now this robot is only around 400 and really changes my life already. I am content as it is with this robot. She is the robot in my profile picture she was in her companion mode which I use to hold her for the therapeutic weight. A service dog isnt recommend for my type of mental disability since it puts a lot more anxiety on me in public situations. There's cons like can't, care for, afford, or owner train a real dog at the moment. I enjoy your videos a ton it inspires me to moving forward and this video moved me so much because disability assistance robots aren't widely known yet. It is very hard to feel understood in society with the robot I currently have. Thank you for your time ❤❤.

Thanks to both you and your dad for sharing your experience! I thought your exposé was very interesting and that you were lucky to be able to help with development of this concept. It must have been a fascinating, horizon-broadening foray into the world of hi-tech, and your contributions and insights as guide dog user-trainers must have felt likewise to the developers. Can’t say I have an opinion on robot guides vs. dog guides as it seems like a completely individual choice.

Whoa, very interesting to see this kind of thing in development. As someone who has a computer science degree and really likes training dogs, this seems both very close and very far from market ready. Some day, though, some day...

The last thing I want is a guide robot. Guide dogs help prolong life. Robots have no feelings and provide no love to those why are guiding.

Good to see how excited you are about this endeavor Laura. I am old School, so for me interaction with my Service Dog is a big part of helping my Disabilities. I can't see that metal robot Dog being helpful in tasks that are about DPT. They don't look very cuddly😊 Thanks for sharing this very eye opening video. Be well.🐾

The world is about accessibility! There are people that would prefer this over a dog. Much easier to plug something in rather than feed, toilet, exercise, a real dog. In the end it’s not for me but the more accessible options we have the better. Also would never give up my SD.

How did the human tell the robot where to go
@DoggyU

In this particular event I believe it had a programmed destination, but I imagine in the future it will be similar to a guide dog. The robot is responsible for safety, the human knows where they are going and is responsible for the navigation portion.

A living dog will defend you and be a loyal companion. The AI robot dog will just record the felony crime committed against you. The upside is the AI dog can call 911 for you at the very least. 😂😂

They can actually go up to 4 miles an hour, which is a pretty decent walking clip. Technology isn't there yet, but it would be a great option for those that could not keep a dog for whatever reason. But for now, I'll stick with dogs!

@DoggyU if you can't keep a dog, use a cane. Practically no maintenance needed and no software to go wrong. As well, if they want to promote this they need to show the useful features not just "cool robot for blind people".

Hey Kaitlin! As a service dog trainer/handler, I love having a living, breathing dog as an assistive device. But not everyone is able to use a dog to support their medical condition for a variety of reasons (health concerns, living situation, allergies, etc.) . Having other options for those people who might not be the right fit for a dog would be truly helpful. If you check out the CYBATHLON site in the description, you can see how other developments in assistive technology are helping other types of disabilities, increasing independence with these high tech solutions!

I mean... you can always have a separate dog as a pet. The future of practical human service, however, is in AI and machines.
