@iGoddess

How can you not love these animals? So adorable and the enrichment ball is so cool! It's like that with any animal, if they don't know and trust you they all can hurt you pretty bad. You have to earn their trust and vice versa, you have to teach them how to live with you and you have to put in the time and effort to take care of them by educating yourself about the animals behaviors and needs. Once you've earned their trust and know that you're a huge part of their lives, that you care for them, feed them then it's very rewarding for you and the animal. These monitors are very intelligent and you can teach them a lot by just putting in the time and effort. They'll learn to appreciate you, trust you and they'll learn thad a human touch can actually feel good and they'll seek out being loved and rubbed by you. Nothing wrong with a little TLC, cause it just feels amazing! In the wild they'd never learn to know how it is to be loved and taken care of by a human being, cause they're afraid and understandably so. So I'd never recommend to get up close and personal with a wild monitor lizard or any other wild animal for that matter. But if you raise them, teach them and earn their trust then they'll love you for it and they'll show you that love back in their own way. And that is the most rewarding thing EVER !!!! There are risks with any animal, you just have to learn and understand the risks that come along with your specific animal. Learn to read your animals behavior, they'll let you know what they like and don't like and you just have to work with them, respect them and give them everything they need. They'll love you for it !!!

Really, I think the problem is that, like any animal, lizards are individuals. Sometimes they're more aggressive, sometimes they're more tame, and saying they are only one of those things would be a dumb call. Of course, working with them their whole lives, and instilling a positive image of their owner helps immensely, but that doesn't mean they won't bite or still be aggressive sometimes.

@@chickensdontsurf I feel like reptiles must be respected for them to "like" your company. Even with bearded dragons, you have to start slow, letting them know your presence in their cage, cleaning, changing water bowl, while showing you're not a threat. Monitor lizards are another level of awareness, intelligence than most reptiles, they understand what's going on, and they react strongly to what they don't like. And you have to respect the boundaries they give you until they decide they trust you enough to let you do this or this. Reptiles learn with respect, space and food. Work with him slowly, show you're not a threat and respect his limits and then, you will be good buddies who spend time with each other outside the tank for fun.

It’s better to discourage the keeping of monitors. People are stupid and want every animal to act like a dog or like toys... that’s without counting the load of humans that place these creatures on a small enclosure and do a lot of stupid shit.

I used to think this way. Then I came to encourage them with helping educate, esp since you can get smaller monitors, and enclosures can easily get to correct sizes.

They aren’t great pets but with enough handling and bonding (and captive bred) they will can become tamed like this.
