I am the Steve mentioned at the start and my full quote is that due to Warhammer I’ve made more friends in my 40s than I lost in my 30s, I’m 41. Warhammer in all forms is so good for people to meet like minded people. For middle aged men it’s an incredible experience, I played 5 beautiful wonderful like minded people last weekend and it was amazing!

After my grandfather passed of cancer when I was fourteen, I've always tried to dispell the discomfort that comes with the topic by joking that it 'grows on you'. And though levity can help us to process difficult situations, when the disease exacts its final toll a shroud falls upon you that makes it hard to see the bright side. Your eulegy was unexpetedly moving to me, thank you for sharing it. You have my condolences.

A call for good comments? Here we go! I haven't yet had time to get a single Old World game on table- I'm a father of two young kids who works nights and takes care of them during the day while their mother is at work, so gaming is a pretty low priority. And still, still!, this show remains the highlight of my week thanks to your insight, positivity, and the general vibe of two buds hanging out and discussing a mutually beloved hobby.

Sorry for your loss Val, I lost my best friend from my childhood to cancer last week also. He was a big part of my life and families life 17 years. He also was a fighter, I was lucky to have been able to spend plenty of time with him before the end. He was so young and had so many plans. He was also so optimistic about the future once he got better, but alas! I hope you find solace in the people around you and keep the good memories alive. Sending all my love from Australia. -Isla ❤

Alex was definitely the nicest person I’ve ever met through Warhammer. First met him when I moved to Ontario and started getting back into 40k. Talked loads and made me feel welcome to the community. After I started traveling to more events I regularly ran into him and would catch up. I last ran into him at CCBB22 and hadn’t been to any 40k events in years so I had no knowledge of anything till a few weeks ago. I wish the best for his family during these rough times.

I believe the term you are looking for about Old World as a game being emotional is that as a game system it is evocative. The dice rolls call forth feelings. Sometimes those feelings are pleasant to experience, and others they are not. But that is a strength of the system - it causes you to experience humanity through a game of warhammer and provides you with stories to recount later.

I appreciate this show so much. Been listening since around the time the KZitem channel started, and you guys have consistently inspired me. I live in Japan and the Old World community is in its infancy here, and while there are some Japanese game stores hosting events, there have only been a few primarily English-speaking expats like myself getting into the game. This show has been the hype drip feed that has kept me going as I have been building up my first army and making my way through the ruleset, and I am about to have my first actual game of Old World on Saturday. I am unbelievably hyped, more so than I have ever been for any 40K game since I jumped back into the hobby in its 8th edition. Thanks Rob and Val for your enthusiasm, and in particular for the time you take out of your busy lives to make this show!Keep up the fantastic work. Cheers a bunch for getting me into this fantastic game and world.

Hey guys, just to even the balance on positive comments ... Rob I have always been a fan of your AOS content but have absolutely loved you and Val and square based since the release of The Old World. I have a confession to make, I didn't love Warhammer Fantasy. I was much more a 40k guy ... but I am loving TOW and much of that has to do with the fun of listening to you guys and rebuilding (and raiding my AOS horde) to build armies for TOW. I have been wargaming since 1992 and am now almost 60 and many of my best friends are gamers. We now run BrisCon in Brisbane Australia (it was on last weekend) and the number of familiar faces across multiple game systems I now know because of rolling dice is incredible. As you said Rob, we are sh#t at making friends and my regular weekly group is as much a support/chat/banter/friendship group than a gaming group. In a gaming comment, I find it hilarious that my favourite games at the moment are all flashbacks in a way (TOW, LI, Bloodbowl and Warmaster Revolution) ... I swear it is not because I am old! Vale to your friend Alex Val.

My only trophy from old fantasy was a teams event. Still have it somewhere in the house. Also has my favourite story from those days of being told to push for a win. Figured I could probably get something like a 14-6 but was a risk. Then terror bombed off 2 massive Bret Lances. Redirected into the 2 other Bret Lances who also failed terror tests and made basically 3/4s of the opponents army flee off the board in a turn

Guys, I love your content. Highly entertaining and insightful, especially the deep dives. Still, I feel like there is a big elephant in the room that is being ignored, and that is the following: The Old World rulebook specifically states that from the command group, the standard bearer should be placed in the center of the front rank, yet when wounds are allocated to the unit, it is the champion that will be the last man standing. This seems like an egregious oversight and inconsistency, and I need influential people like yourselves to speak out on this inconsistency in the rules. I don't mean to express any hyperbole, but to me it feels literally unplayable. Help us Square Based podcast, you're my only hope...

RE: 3D printed armies, I've been kind of impressed with how Old World players have taken the idea of "limitation breeds creativity" and really run with it, especially with the handful of armies like Wood Elves, Chaos Dwarves etc. that you literally couldn't buy GW models for on release (and in most cases still can't) or things like [hero] on [mount] that don't have a reasonable proxy model. Seeing the kitbashes and cool 3d prints people have incorporated has been awesome, and the fact that people generally seem on board with letting everything rock on the table speaks volumes about how passionate the community is when it comes to just playing and enjoying the game for what it is. I'm still on the outside looking in trying to get my army painted up so I don't have the full perspective, but it's really promising to see a community so enthusiastic about their game. It really strikes me as the ultimate hobby sandbox right now and I think this period, where people are getting creative almost out of necessity, is a really special time to be following/playing Old World.

If anyone has done historical wargaming and have done Napolonics. Warhammer Fantasy Battles and now Old World (even more old world) is napolonic battles with wizards and monsters and it’s amazing. There is a shape to the battle with the formations and when you look at a battlefield it looks like the Osprey battle books, there is a flank there is a left hook or refused flak. Idk I just rambled I love it. Also go play Blucher for Napolonics it’s amazing and the appreciation for Warhammer will only increase.

Great show guys. Firstly, a lot of what you’re saying about Tournament and teams makes me feel like people are playing ‘the tournament game’ and not ‘ToW’ These formats make it less about the individual battles and more about scoring tournament points. Interested to hear how you might solve that. The other thing ai wanted to say was about problems in the meta. I agree that these things may be ‘beatable’ or able to be worked around, but as they stand they are format warping. If you can’t beat one, you just lose, handedly! Looking at the balancing philosophy of say, Magic the Gathering, things are changed when they are format warping. They don’t win everything, they are beatable but their impact on the meta is dramatic. I think dragons fit that bill. Maybe screamy mimi too.
@SquareBasedOldWorld
4 ай бұрын
I very much agree about the impact of format warping or "meta defining" choices. This is why we came out so strongly against single entity spam and adding a rule of 3/6 to prevent that from dominating list builds. However the meta defining elements like T6 and/or ridden monsters, and Level 4 casters ... that is something that we think should play out and is above our influence to try and change. I suspect the next FAQ will also seek to balance things as well and we might see some more substantial tweaks to maybe shift things around a bit.

Great video! Never played in a team event like you talk about, but seems intriguing. I'm so curious about the VC scream lists - how are the big screamer monsters effectively reserve moving away? They have to get close, and then they only get a 10" move away (while having to wheel and such). Are they peeking out just barely to scream and sidestepping 5" behind something?

I think dragons are not dominant because most people go to tournaments with lists tailored to deal with them. They have turned into a stat check, much like Knights are in 40K. This obviously opens spaces for people betting on not fighting a dragon and bringing different stuff to the table. It’s gaming the meta basically.

On the meta front, how can there be a "defined meta" at the moment because 6 of the factions don't even have their armies of infamy out yet with the arcane journals, not to mention the unique magiv items. The O&G infamy lists build completely different to the grand army that they may as well be different factions and in my factions jounral (TK), the magic items in the journal are some of the most spicy we have access to. Lord only knows what Elves and Chaos are going to get.
@SquareBasedOldWorld
5 ай бұрын
The meta game is simply how players play the game. Certain things have certainly emerged as "good" and so players adapt their selections to either take those things or counter them. As further rules are released those elements will continue to shift. I feel like I'm mansplaining but yeah. That's all a "meta" is. If a game has never been played there would not be a meta per se, but we're well past that now.
@zeferous130

@@SquareBasedOldWorld Ah sorry - i meant more "settled" like older editions would get to but obviously as things are all rolling out this year in stages, I'm guesing things will be a but more volatile (although from the stats in your last video, it sounds like Empire might need a doozy of an Arcane Journal if those trends continue). Either way, it'll be fun. Other than lvl 4's and big dragon hero's, is there anything that has jumped out and been consistently good across the events you've run so far? The consensus in the discord I'm in for TK is basically that a bunch of units are "good or atleast good situationally if you build into them" but the only universal consensus is that Skelly Cavalry spearmen are steaming piles of rubbish haha.

58:00 Never tried AoS. But 40K is probably a better game than TOW. From a strict mechanics perspective. But. It also FEELS more like a game. In TOW I charge with my cavalry. My Champion heroicly sacrofices himself to stop the enemy Lord to kill all his men. In 40K? I move 4" to the side so my other unit is within 6" and thus get a +1 to hit. And then I use THIS Strategem that feels more or less purley mechanical to have reroll 1s to wound when that unit fires. Like... its a game. A good game. But doesnt give me the right feel. Also the over abundance of special characters emphatises that. My first game of 40K in 10 years? 1000pts vs Guard. He had Lord Solar AND Ursula Creed. Because it was the optimal way to build his list. Two namned characters in 1000 pts. Felt wrong....

I think because of FBIGO that the downside of losing combat isn't quite as catastrophic so for most armies it's a nice to have rather than a must have. Ironically undead (who used to never take a bsb) get old school full LD rerolls and now for them it seems to be a very strong choice!

Is there a link to the rules for teams play? It sounds pretty interesting but I can't get all the details from the show. One of the things I learned playing Magic the Gathering is that I prefer multiplayer games. One on one can be fun, but there's often like 4 of us who want to play at the same time. Maybe that's doubles, not team (team sounds more like a track meet or swim meet where there are still individual competitions but the points are consolidated to a team).
