Hello 👋 friends and welcome back to RtR!
Jumper cables do come in lots of different sizes. The first thing to look at and the most important is the gauge of the wire. This means how thick is the wire. The thicker the wire the lower the gauge. The lower the gauge the more electricity can flow through which means more power. They go from 1-12 gauge again with 1 being the best and most expensive to 12 being the thinnest, cheapest, and least powerful. Most mechanics will recommend that you go with a 4-6 gauge cable. The problem with the higher gauge wires is that it may be able to jump a weak battery but it might not work if the battery is dead. Not a position you want to be in. If you have a truck you will definitely want to go with at least a 4 gauge wire just because you will have a bigger battery that will need more power to jump.
The next thing you need to think about is the length. They come in 10ft and 20ft. Most of the time a 10 ft cable will do fine but if you get in lots of spots that won’t allow for a vehicle to get in front of you you may want to go with the 20 ft just in case.
Lastly make sure you get a cable that has copper on the ends of the alligator clips. Copper will conduct electricity the best and last the longest. There are a lot of cheeper cables out there that paint the clips. That paint will fall off in time and it’s just bare metal underneath which is not as conductive as copper making the cables worthless.
