Transformers: Age of Ultron was released a year after Avengers: Age of Extinction. Both feature combat droids meant to be used for defence. Both have a silver robot take over the droid army. Optimus Prime's redesigned to look like Iron Man and also fly now. Both have good guys that are each marketed to a specific colour or stereotype. Obviously, one is a lot better than the other.

A fascinating one to me is "Exorcist: The Beginning" and "Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist" Both films star the same lead actor (Stellan Skarsgård) playing the same role in the same basic premise. Dominion (Dir. Paul Schrader) was the original attempt, but the studio wanted a more audience pleasing horror movie and had Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, Elm Street 4) to come in and shoot a whole new, similar movie with a different script. They released "Exorcist: The Beginning" to overwhelmingly negative response and then decided to allow Paul Schrader to release his version which received moderately better responses. Both have been released as a double feature together on DVD. What's most interesting to me is probably the fact that it's not even alternate cuts using reshot/deleted footage between the two. They shot two different movies with the same actor and roughly the same story with different scripts.

I heard from a screenwriter a on a podcast a while back explaining why this “two similar films” thing happens in Hollywood. The reason being is that studios who get hundreds of scripts every year often get the same scripts. They employ script readers (yes that is a real job) to sift through them all and those same readers will come back saying “this is pretty good” and sometimes they will be the same script or concept. These scripts are not all bought individually so if they are shared anyone can just look and read them if they like. Sure it’s weird as an outsider looking in thinking “hey it’d be too easy to get these movie confused” and your right but the studio mind set is “you don’t make it someone else will.” Better not lose out.

My favourite odd film craze is string of 3 movies over 4 years focusing on the disappearance Roman 9th Legion: The Last Legion (2007), Centurion (2010), and The Eagle (2011).

I figured a pretty big one they missed was Batman V Superman, Civil War, and Transformers: The Last Knight coming out over the span of two years and all having protagonists fighting one another as selling points of the movies.

The funny thing about the illusionist was that all the tricks they do were real tricks, but they only work from fixed perspectives. The growing plant does not work if your show it up close in real life. You have to be an audience member in front of the Giant sheet of glass that the "Hologram" stuff is happening against. the people being shown on the glass were usually in the orchestra pit (out of direct sight) but seeing them through the reflection of glass you didn't know was there is what freaks the audience out. The modern camera work takes it far past the line of believability though.

3:29 the thing about EDtv is that it's actually a remake of the 1994 Quebec movie 'Louis 19' (AKA 'King of the Airways)! So, you could say EDtv's idea came up before Truman Show, and before the huge push for reality TV as well!

Embarassingly I pooped my pants this afternoon. I was at the beach when it hit me and I thought about dropping it off in the ocean but got too nervous because there were people everywhere so I told Mum to drive me home as quickly as possible and just as we got home and I was about 10 metres from making it home to the toilet I shitted hard in my board shorts. Just wanted to share

I only just realised that Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis both starred in the same but different movies. Was one of them really liking the sound of their spouse's new role and thought they'd jump on board? Who copied the other? That's gonna keep me up tonight

Always had the same thought but about Kunis and Portman instead- hot off the back of Black Swan where they're playing rivals for a part, they both play the same role in their identical next film. Did one hear about the idea through the other? Weird coincidence if not.

EDTV has grown on me over the years but it's no Truman Show. Though EDTV does feel closer to the world we live in. I worked at McDonald's back in 1999. For some strange reason we had a staff meeting in the lobby of a cinema and afterwards they gave us a free ticket to anything we wanted. Phantom Menace wasn't out yet so the 2 best options were EDTV and The Matrix. Out of 17 people I was the only one to see The Matrix and I was the only one in there. It's strange what people are drawn to.

I now have a pavlovian response to the Mr Sunday Movies title card. I hear that and I hit the like before anything else can happen. You've done this to my brain. I may have already been predisposed to that so it might be a bit my fault too. When I was a kid I had a CD clock radio so I could wake up to whatever I wanted. I chose the Star Wars OST. More specifically the track as they approach The Death Star. Made sense at the time. Starts out quiet then builds to when they get pulled in by the tractor beam. As a kid I didn't appreciate what would happen if I woke up to this track hundreds of times. 20 years later as I watch that scene and the music kicks in I get this anxious feeling like I need to be somewhere. It sticks with you. Leaving a like isn't so bad in comparison.

Twin movies happen because studios can sit on scripts for years and when they hear another studio is pushing a volcano movie, they pull out their stash of scripts and pick one to compete. Whoever gets the biggest stars to sign on tends to get the biggest profit. Same reason you'll see competing food companies come out with similar products around the same time (ex: Wendy's and McDonald's both introducing spicy nuggets recently or Burger King and Checker's introducing fish sandwiches around the same time).

The craziest of these is Enemy (2013) and The Double (2013), which are both about the paranoia that follows from the protagonist meeting another person who looks identical to himself. Double doubles. Also, it seems weird how one of these doubles is always a significantly better movie, like Enemy over The Double, Deep Impact over Armageddon, The Prestige over The Illusionist, etc.
