I have a 1960's Japanese Pearl Challenger Mahogany kit in blue sparkle and that little kit sounds so huge and Punchy, the Snare is a 5x14 and it sounded nice with the cheap snare wires and old heads but once I put some Puresound Blaster 20's and new heads (Remo CS) it really came to life. I had to put a new throw off but that wasn't a problem.

Lovely drum! I'm in the market for a MIJ snare (or two) for myself. Nothing quite like those old lauan shells that lack finish on the interior for a dry, throaty tone. Thanks for sharing, and great playing too!!

I'm such a huge fan and advocate of these mij snares. I've got about a half dozen or so and as long as you can get the throwoff to behave, you're good. They sound great. Way better than you'd ever expect from a drum that you can get for under $50, and as stated in the video, they come in some pretty funky finishes. Thanks for bringing attention to these awesome snares!!

1960's era Tempro and Whitehall labelled drums (along with some other 'MIJ' drums) from the 1960's were made by Pearl. I had a Whitehall 5-pc drum kit which was the first 'real' drum kit I purchased back in 1971 I found out that it was actually made by Pearl for Whitehall. It was in a white on black 'onyx' finish (sort of the reverse of the well known Ludwig black onyx from the same time period) and the drums themselves seemed to be made quite well and as I recall they sounded pretty good. The snare was no great shakes..just a simple steel shell 5 x 14" with a snare throw off very similar to that Tempro snare. The hardware wasn't all that great either but all in all it was a decent kit. I got compliments when I played out with it. I sold it to help finance purchase of a car many years ago wish I still had it. Some years after I sold it found a single 16 x 16" loner Whitehall floor tom in the same finish and bought it 'just because' it reminded me of that Whitehall kit I had. That drum was from later period Whitehall and it was made by a different manufacturer..no where near as good construction as those first Whitehall drums I had. It sounds good though I recently used it in combination with several other floor toms and a snare for a 'drum salute' for a pipe band I belong to. Whitehall had some really cool finishes the white/black onyx like I had also they had 'root beer' swirl a 'tiger stripe swirl', a blue 'bowling ball' swirl' along with the usual sparkles.

This one's the opposite of junk. Love the sound, especially at the higher tunings.

That is an excellent sounding snare. I like luan drums in general. Both my main gigging sets are MIJ/MIT Pearl stencils from the 70's with upgraded spurs.Just finished a restoration on a late 70's MIT Gretsch Blackhawk with similar shell construction.

The snare beds make a big difference in the performance of a snare drum.If you have a vintage MIJ drum, and it doesnt have a snare bed, find a snare drum that DOES have a bed,and simply take a file to the shell and copy one that does.Do this to any of those old MIJ snares, tune them properly, with good heads, and they all will sound great.

I've collected a number of these MIJ kits over the years and some of them do have their magic. And yes... there are a few gems where the companies that built them went even further with quality control and bearing edges. "Tempo" being one of those... Not to be confused with "Tempro". Great video... and thanks for showing these rare drums some love. ;-)

Hoshino badged sets and Hoshino's version of Camcos are the top top find of MIJ in my opinion. You can get a pro Hoshino kit comparable to any high-end Tama drums today for 300 CAD in perfect condition, chrome cleaned and all. Crazy!!!! Too bad they are rarer than dragon eggs :(

I bought one- 80 bucks. At first when I took it out of the box and played it I said - oh this might be wack- then I tuned it and now I’m amazed at how cool it sounds. Wow! And so cheap! I ordered another one! Might be my favorite snare at the moment

The drum is just a nice vintage snare. The playing though is killer. You’re bouncing off it and really making it talk! Third listen… (my snare work needs work)

Not surprisingly the lugs look a lot like those on Pearl’s 75th anniversary President series.

Interesting, it actually sounds like an 60s Rogers Powertone to me. In either case, sounds great.
