I love when you aren't sure how a skit is going to end and then the comedian hits on the only ending that really would have been appropriate. If they get a man to help them or if they truly give up, the video would make it seem like, even if in only a small way, Julie was admitting inferiority. But by making it a stupid mistake, she maintains that women are capable of anything while still being able to critique overzealous yet underdeveloped commitment to an idea. Great job!

I don't think that's the reason why she could open the jar in end. It's to show that she can't put the devil into the box again once it's out: she's already renounced feminism because of silliness, it would be even worse to switch back with such volatility. It gives meaning to standing behind what you support in the face of obstacles. In a very comical way. Plus admitting difference is not an admission of inferiority, that's what's so silly about renouncing feminism over a pickle jar.

When I was 19, I moved into my first apartment and I had a housewarming party. One of my coworkers, an older woman whom I looked up to a lot, was in attendance. And boy am I glad she was because, among other things, her housewarming gift to me was doling out little golden nuggets of wisdom and practical advice that I apply on a daily basis even now, 20 years later. One such tip: to open a tight lid, run it under hot water for a minute or so. It warms up and loosens the seal and the lid opens easily. A revelation! It works every time and I don’t have to resort to more barbaric means to get to my precious pickles! (It also helps to twist it the right direction though, lol)

How to open a stuck jar; * Run the lid under hot water * Bang the edges of the lid against the counter * Put a rubber band around the lid to give more grip, and more rubber bands around the jar for your other hand * Pry under the lid with a fork to let a tiny amount of air in, to equalize the pressure * Turn the jar sideways while opening, then tilt up once you break the seal, since lateral rotation around a horizontal axis is easier for your graspers than rotation around a vertical axis * If you can heat the jar in a bowl of hot water, this will increase the pressure in the jar beyond ambient, so there's a force acting from the inside of the jar to get the lid off And most importantly, don't over-tighten the lid or refrigerate unopened jars that don't require refrigeration until after opening to avoid having the issue again. 👍

A rubberband grips it and I‘be never had a jar break me down again, but a stuck jar has definitely had me completely deconstruct my life before. It’s funny because I asked my male roomate to open it a few times when I really gave up, and it was really stuck. After a entire fucking day I called my mother at 1 in the morning and she answered and was like “what? You’re this stressed about a jar? Put a rubberband on the lid so you’ll get a better grip. God I thought you were in trouble calling so late”. Needless to say the rubberband worked, and it reconfirmed to me that women will find a way to do things when they need to, sometimes we just have to reach out to our mothers that fought for equal pay and our grandmothers who fought to vote. Sometimes they have more figured out then it looks like

For anyone: sometimes you just have to give things some thought and some trial & error. For parents & would-be parents: Don’t forget to teach some basic life skills for your kids: cooking, dish washing, laundry, chores, budgeting, simple house repairs, cyber safety, etc.

Haha, for anyone actually struggling run the lid under hot water for 10-30 seconds and then bang the lid on the edge of the counter. It will screw off like a dream

here's my emancipation tip for opening jars: wear dish washing gloves. Rubber, friction, better purchase, less entropy.

Love how balanced the couch is - Julie in green, but the pillow is orange, and Gina is in orange, with a green pillow behind her. *attention to details* (and yes, I did notice you were turning it the wrong way, lol!) Love you, Julie!!

Get leather gloves and an aluminum tray and smash the jar with a hammer while in the tray. Store pickles in another jar. Rinse and repeat every time you need pickles. Invest in jars--oh wait you opened it.

What a brilliant video! Julie Nolke certainly deserves all the accolades for her sharp and insightful writing. But I find the point in this video to also be so sad (and well articulated by Nolke). In their confusion about gender roles, these two women towards the end accept a patriarchal scenario in which women are seen as essential mother figures, weak, helpless, dependent on men. They talk themselves into that position and together find a sort of solidarity in accepting their apparent station in life. When the jar does open at the end, it seems the moment for a change of heart has passed. They are tired now and simply accept their final mistake about the lid. To me, they seem defeated at the end as the feminist spark is long gone.

Perfect situation for some mansplaining: should you ever encounter a jar like this, take a knife and squeeze it between the cover and the glas and wiggle it a bit. If you get it right you will get some air in the jar and it won't be pressurized that much anymore, which is why you have hard time opening it. You are welcome, m'ladys.

Yeah, that works much better when you're trying to spin the lid _off_ instead of spin the lid _on_
