I appreciate the love guys! The paints are definitely one of the highlights of my career. I agree on the tester bottles - they suck! We didn't have a say in the shape or style of our demo stuff. The retail bottles are really nice :D Super happy to see how much they've funded! The additive colors are a bit glossy, and surely intended to be barely added to colors. This was selected because of how dark that pigment is (they are both single pigment). Jon mentions it a little - but NO colors other than black have black pigment, only few have white added :D Hand mixing all the colors / temps / and naming was something I wanted to really give a love letter to the hobby I've been a part of for over 25 years. Rock on!

I have determined that there is a sweet spot between Stoney and Chip that encompasses people who like to push themselves between the building, painting, and gaming parts of the hobby, almost in equal measure. Maybe they even dabble in some commissions. Since it's not quite "Ace", I'm going to call it "Jack" (as in "Worse than Ace, King, and Queen" and also "of all trades"). The Jack likes to vibe with the hobby and is as excited to build and paint minis, as they are to use them. Likes to say "Walls are for leaning" when talking about hitting a hobby wall or plateau. The Jack is just as likely to watch Cult of Paint video as they are to watch Auspex Tactics. At a convention, they probably dropped off a mini at the competition area on their way to their first tournament match. They aren't hoping to win either, but they enjoy doing a little better than last time. The Jack likes to use the whole buffalo when it comes to Tabletop minis games. I like to think of folks like Goobs and Uncle Atom as Jacks

I'm pretty sure I fall most into the Stoney category. I've been painting what has grown into an army of 182 mini's over the last 3 years. I've been almost solely focused on that army and don't really call any miniatures finished. I instead switch between mini's based on what I'm feeling and slowly improve them. I haven't played the miniature game, but may in 10th edition I also love painting stoned so that checks out hahaha. Thanks for the vid.

I had a bit of a side positive for Reds. They are a great way to show that being in the hobby isn't as hard as it sounds. They show the game, the simple way to be painted, the simple way to be based. They can kind of help people interested with maybe some of the hesitancy a person might have. Definitely have had people in passing tell me they might like kill team or something but know they can't paint. So the answer would be to show them the simple basics and let them enjoy from there.

The hobby is definitely therapy for me, at points in my life when things have got me down I've bought minis and painted as a way of distracting myself. In a way, it helps me to visualise a multi-step method of getting to where I want to be, which rejuvenates my hope that things can get better if I work at it. it's like a micro exercise in struggling through difficulties and not giving up. Also, being surrounded by visual representations of my hard work gives me the energy to power on and get work done.

Red Forman was played by Kurtwood Smith, not Ron Howard's brother Clint Howard. Btw, I was a Chip and I have evolved into a Stoney. Definitely the hobby is my relaxation outlet. I love collecting, painting, modeling, playing, and reading the lore pretty much equally. Very slow progression, but very little self-imposed pressure to paint to a certain standard. I paint a couple times a week and would consider myself a slightly above average army painter.

Aces - The Maverick (from Top Gun or Top Gun 2: Maverick) Chips - The Barney (Barney Stinson from How I Meet Your Mother) because he has "The Play Book" which he uses all the time and while the "plays" don't always work he keeps trying to refine with each attempt. Bunnies - "The New Guy/Gal". I currently have nothing as a TV or Movie reference, but lets face it the new person to any kind of scene can very often go balls deep going to every event, buying all of the clothes to fit in and or gets all of the merchandise.

My tweak would be to group them by what they find most satisfying in the act of painting itself: Chad - Nothing - Chad does not get any satisfaction from painting. They might commission someone to paint their models, or they might begrudgingly paint them themselves, but they hate it. Red - Efficiency - Red gets satisfaction from being efficient, either from a time or a money perspective (or both). The painted miniatures are often done as part of an army, and are valuable based on the ratio between effort and final appearance. Stoney - The Process - Stoney gets satisfaction from the process of painting. They may describe painting as "relaxing" or "meditative," and the final painted miniature is valuable as a monument to time well spent. Bunny - Novelty - Bunny gets satisfaction from experimenting with new painting techniques and products. The painted model is valuable as a prototype for future experiments. Chip - Improvement - Chip gets satisfaction from seeing how their painting improves. The painted miniature is valuable as a benchmark for further work. Ace - Mastery - Ace gets satisfaction from painting the best they can. They may or may not like the process of painting, but the satisfaction Ace gets is based on how good the final product looks. No matter what, I think people that paint also get satisfaction from expressing themselves and creating something, whether that's through lore-accurate paintjobs or expressing their own unique perspective.

I'm definitely a Stoney/Bunny/Chip. Generally speaking, I am a Stoney as I find painting the models meditative. I especially enjoy painting rank and file troops over anything else. I find that I enjoy Heresy models because they are less ornate. The mass effects of additional crap all over the character models to be overwhelming. The Heresy models have much less than 40K. Lately I've been painting lots of AOS and I've found that the old world models have less crap and over the top details modeled into them. I love to try new techniques, products, etc. and I love to see my improvement year over year. I can't finish models if I'm trying to be an "ACE".

I'm definitely an ultra-Stony with like 10% Chip. I just painted my black templars in the Zorn palette exclusively with oils, but it's just for fun. I love trying new things but it doesnt bother me if it looks good or not: if the colors are in the right place, I'll varnish it and worry about highlights later! Lenses? Solid green, no highlights. Armor? Ivory black with some titanium white smeared on! Currently I'm slapping speedpaint on Rumbleslam minis just to get stuff done. I work as an imaging tech in a hospital setting, so it definitively was therapy during COVID for me. It's funny, my friends all have better painted minis than me because they follow painting guides. But they confessed how jelious they are of me! I get a few models done every week which makes me the most productive in the group and they look about the same from 3 feet away. They asked me my thought process for painting my orks in my custom scheme: "Orks are green, green and purple look good, green and orange look good, and orange and purple look good." Meanwile, my friend has so many unpained Deldar because he cant find a guide he likes. My advice? "What's your favorite color?" 😂

The Bunny, of which I am, could be called Yamcha (Yom-chuh). This is a character from Dragon Ball Z who, at times, is very skillful; and at other times, complete doodoo. In Super, he is depicted as a wishful Super Saiyan who is often reminded that he can't do what Goku does because he hasn't trained enough. He's capable of it, but he gets distracted very easily by his enthusiasm of the idealized Super Saiyan without committing to the work Goku subjects himself to. Still, Yamcha continues to strive (often times more mentally than physically) towards his goals and continues to catch the spark every time he witnesses the incredible skill demonstrated by other Super Saiyans. And, (no, this isn't just because I just watched DBZ Super - OK, it totally is...) for Chip, you're easily describing Vegeta (Vedj-eat-uh). He has skills, and he's always striving to learn more, but he gets frustrated that he isn't the best yet. So, therefore, he pushes himself by focusing on the techniques and skills of Goku until he can surpass him. He is theorized to do so later in his future, but in the media, he's always a step behind. Still, he beats himself up; he pouts a few times in self-pity; he constantly berates himself for his shortcomings. As a result, he dedicates so much more time than many - possibly even than Goku - at training.

I’m like a mix between a chip and a stoney: I painted for like 4+ years in school, and got relatively good, and I feel learning techniques comes from understanding the subject and the medium- both things I did in my art classes. I look up specific techniques and painters for inspiration and stealing their technique. But (right now at least) I love the lore or Warhammer a lot, and painting, whilst I want to get better, don’t feel bogged down with my finished products. I feel a plateau may come, but I don’t mind for the chaff units I have rn, as long as they are good enough

My lady-friend and I observed that there is a missing profile -- a variant of the Ace, but one that doesn't feel any "stress". Let's call it the "Zen Master". This is a person who is advanced in the hobby, but feels no pressure to compete or advance their skill level at an accelerated rate. It's just a hobby. To relax. Learn as you go. Maybe they have competed in a painting competition, but it's just to prove something to themselves, not to prove something to "the community". The person enjoys painting figures, painting terrain, and/or playing games -- and just learning as they go!

I paint/model/play about equal amounts, I feel like my paint jobs are decent and look good on the tabletop and I'd like to get a little better but I'm also okay with that happening over time without really pushing for it. Good episode! I’m kind of a bunny, but my problem is I change focus every 10 min. Seriously I fall in deep passion about some art aspect fit a week or two to a month then some reality sets in I relax and work on my sketchbook for a while, then bam! Something else captures me. I can’t buy much stuff because I’m kind of a geezer just past the fringes of hoarding. I need to minimalize, very seriously. During the most hearthot portion of my mini crush I bought a double handful of minis, the original hero quest game, a big range of proacryl paints, and the Squidmar brushes. I had to use extreme restraint, but rationalized that showed enough commitment without risking serious mass. I don’t play anything GW although damn I love the art, nor do I play d&d. Since then I have fought with leather work, pin striping, paper quilling, bookbinding, watercolors, pixel art, hydroponics, bonsai, etc, etc. it’s like a damn kaleidoscope. I listen to a bunch of mini channels and podcasts, have for years but not sure when I’ll get to it. My main recurrent focus is illustration, and I have largely weaned myself from anime towards fantasy illustration. Fewer waifus more fantasy maps. When I get rid of a bunch more stuff I’ll have a work space. Seriously I don’t have enough room to set up. I work on a clipboard in bed. I had to drop WoW and reclaim those hours. I really hope I can get great at something before I keel over. I have some serious design skills and a lot of painting techniques but I need more anatomy, composition, perspective etc. Thank God for Pinterest and Procreate.

I think a lot of painters are in the mix of trying to get models painted to put on the table, but also trying to improve, but trying to improve how they look on the table and not how they look in a display/camera/close up. I know me and most of the people I play with fall here. Speedpaint videos are popular not just because of speed, but because of this is the level we are in, try to improve and test new things but have no ambition/desire of trying to paint something for display. That's not the same as not being proud of results. :D Also we hardly ever post something online because some well meaning soul so often feel the need to hand out tips instead of quiet admiration. Like do you know how much paint you have to slap on a model to get an OSL effect that you can see on a model in a brightly lit room on a table behind some terrain as opposed to a zoomed in photo? Also I just slipped with my brush but felt done with the model, just tell me I'm a good boy and move on, when I want actual feedback I will ask for it. Thank you.

I think on the radar graph of these profiles, I'm heavy in the Stoney and Bunny axes. I paint for fun (and for gaming) and I'm happy with my skill level, and while I do like to learn more efficiencies (bordering into Red territory?) but I don't chase it. I'm a Bunny when it comes to games - case in point is I had to take a metaphorical step away from my computer when I nearly preordered all the Star Wars Shatterpoint releases when it was first announced, and had to remind myself I should at least wait until the rules are released.

I think I fall on the Stoney but with deadlines. When it comes to army painting I'm more of a Redd, I'd rather get them done and completed and will have less enjoyment while doing a big project like that, I feel the pressure to get it all painted for game day and sometimes that causes burnout. If I'm painting for me, that only is ever seen by me unless I share it online, then I'm definitely more of a Stoney. When you guys first started the podcast I think I was a Chip. I used to care alot about improving constantly, now I just paint, and probably improve passively. If I'm not painting an army every 5 or so models I try to get better at some diffrent technique. But its all just a chill no pressure growth.

I feel like I'm a bunny desperately trying to transition into a Chip but failing for the lack of time and focus (ADD is a b1@tch). Also, I think there is another category where someone is committed to a single game, they will play and paint in various ratios but only miniatures from that game/franchise. It's especially prominent (and partly understandable) in the communities around GW games. For them the hobby is that game and nothing else exists, they will only improve their painting when it is somehow "required" from the perspective of it. For example when a sculpt appears with fire or smoke in it, they will learn how to paint that but only then. On a completely unrelated note: Warzone Eternal made it into the link list! Woop woop! Didn't make the cut for the podcast itself though ;_;

A brief summary of the Profiles, as I understand them. Chad just wants to play the games, not interested in painting. Red begrudgingly paints his army to a low standard, so he can play with painted models. Stony enjoys painting, but is not very driven to improve. Bunny is a newbie who is excited about painting and probably not great at it, yet. Chip is a so-so pro. Ace means you are a painting god.

He is not wrong about the cheese, I can almost taste it too. It would be interesting if you guys could find a way to rate a painter and assign them a profile like Scott did for painter's tables. That would be a difficult prospect though. lol

There is no such thing as a plateau... There is however fear of putting in the effort necessary. I for one was all of your categories and still am.. whatever I am trying to accomplish momentarily

My name is Chad, and I'm ironically not that at all. More of a Stoney or Chip I think.

I guess im a bit of a deflated chip? I like learning new tricks to apply to my minis, but im not going hard on learning. I started without youtube and all that, so i kinda developed my own way of doing stuff. Im not opposed to adding new tricks to the arsenal, but im perfectly happy doing stuff as i've done them so far. I try to make it a point of adding at least 1 new trick to the minis when i start a new army/project. I would have been a decent stony, if it wasnt for the 40k editions to suck so much that i kinda lost interest in gaming altogether. I still like my chaos marine models, trying to get them all done, but they most likely wont see tabletop use anytime soon. I guess in battletech im a stony. I like gaming as much as painting, and it provides great social days. I dont really give half as much about painting those models perfectly as i do for my necromunda gang. My chaos marines are probably gonna end up getting "redded" just to get em out of the way😂

I think a lot of us start as a bunny, especially those of us who come in from the painting side of the hobby.
