Thank you for your amazing and interesting work on this channel Kuljit ji I am curious to know what tabla makers who have been doing this work for several generations would say when you ask them why exactly they place the gab off center

This is one of the challenges - not having a level playing field for debate/discussion. Glad that people are using this channel to express their opinions. Thanks for your comments

I think it's a good point but on the khol the "gab" or clay patch is in the center on both sides. That's because one usually plays full open sounds on it and not as much "dampened" sounds. I think the reason it's a bit forward on the tabla is because you generally have the base of your hand dampening the drum head. So by having the black "spot" where it is traditionally, you actually have the "weighted compound" at the point of maximum amplitude.

Thank you. That's a good point. I have also tried playing with the spot closer to me, and it's definitely easier to create 'mend' because the 'runway' is shorter and easier to access during fast tempos. Regards - and thanks for commenting.

Interesting. You make a good point that can be applied to many things!

I disagree. Baya utilizes meend. That’s why gab is placed off center. The atta placement in center of head was used as gab for pakhawaj style playing which was open hand and closed hand technique and didn’t use meend technique.(sliding technique). Placing gab off center allows for more room for sound modulation . Otherwise gab in center would deaden sound easier because less space for palm placement to create modulation. But I’m sure there can be good technique developed for gab in middle that will produce good sound. Sukvinder Singh Namdhari plays pakhawaj like tabla baya with open hand technique excellently.

Thanks Brian. Yes, I know Sukvinder well and have recorded him at my studio playing pakhawaj style tabla. Maybe my playing technique is bad, but I personally don't notice any difference in the two gab placements. The only 'weird' thing that I do is slide over my central spot when creating meend glissando. Thank you very much for commenting. Best regards. Kuljit

Thanks for replying. I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s bad technique, The legendary Shamta Prasad played his baya with the gab closer to him and would slide over it. And play his gege’s with palm close or touching gab. The off center gab only provides for more sliding room for palm without touching gab. Bikram Ghosh displays beautiful baya sound modulation.

I have ans the daga is not played on that side only i that side only on the maidam where there less space to keep palm because while playing tabla your hand very near to seyhi so that the hand go not much bhind for that reason

That is a good point, but there are many well-known tabla players who play with the sihai closer to them. Respect

Could you please give a more comprehensive demonstration of the difference in how your bayan sounds?

Yes, I will do so in my next series of videos. The most noticeable difference to me is that the central spot helps with producing a clearer pitch/note. Normally, there are a 'mixture of pitches'.

The positioning of the gob (black thing) obviously affects the resonance (vibration) of the surface which in turn affects the sound. I often rotate the bayan depending on what sound I'm looking for, so I prefer is to be a little on the side and not right in the middle. That's my two cents worth.
