@kampfkustomer2343

This is VERY important. Many older pedals were specific to amp types: a DS1 or Dist+ were designed to run into Marshalls. TS9 into a Fender (which is why Mesa guys love them, similar tone stacks). Not to mention add this to say what a given designer thinks a "Marshall In A Box" should sound like. I have various clones of the Riot, Sansamp GT2, a Line 6 Butler Tube Driver on my M13, GT500, had a Pinnacle Deluxe, and just rebought a Joyo British Sound (Tech 21 British) to get me back where I want to be. The Riot & GT500 sounded E P I C through a Brown Eye clean channel or various clean tube Marshalls. Through my Quilter TB201 I couldn't get that back, despite the Lead Channel being extremely similar to a clean JCM800. Woods > Strings > Pickups > Effects > Preamp > Power Amp > Speaker > Mic. No matter what you choose, these are all stacked, and have to do so well. At least to your ears.

The ds-2 metal zone the one that everyone hates. is my favorite it has an EQ built into it high, low, and mids. It used to be the standard to scoop everything on guitar amps. Hi, just stumbled across your video. About a hundred years ago 😉 (because I'm old, and make involuntary noises getting up from chairs these days) I worked in a guitar shop in London and a local sound engineer dropped in for a chat. I was having a bit of a noodle on one of the shop guitars through a Boss MT-2 *takes cover* and this sound engineer says try putting it in the effects loop and stick a rack EQ in there aswell. It blew. My. Mind. The sound was an entirely different beast, since then I've always tried distortion or overdrive pedals in the loop and sometimes it really works, sometimes its a bit m'eh. If you have an amp with an effects loop, throw the pedal in there, then maybe get an EQ pedal and a compressor to put in front of the amp if you're running a combo.

Was that the opening riff to Dokkens the Hunter? Also, do most two channel amps have no “preamp” on the clean channel? Thank you for all the informative videos! It'd be great if you made a video on buffers. Some questions I have are: There are terms floating around like "high integrity buffer" or "buffers made to drive the signal long distances" vs not? Is there quality or type variance among dedicated guitar buffers vs buffers inside overdrive (or any other) pedals? Can a buffer's effect be undone or type switched by the pedals that come after it? (If there are fundamentally different types of buffers) How many feets of cable, a buffer can keep the sound intact? Are we set for life if we have one or two buffered pedals on our board? If so nobody would use a dedicated buffer. But would they? for some other reason? Are people taking it too far by adding a dedicated buffer to their already buffered pedalboard?

I bypass my preamp and go straight into the return because I don't care for the preamp...I can get a decent tone...until the rest of the band joins in. The mid control on that pedal is just weird. Unfortunately, I keep going back to my Metal Zone. Also, not everyone is using tube amps these days...and guitar stores (at least in my area) are few and far between, and don't have the more boutique stuff to try out, so I get stuck listening to demos on super high-end and colored videos that just don't provide a realistic display. Bluesdriver trick. I often play a PRS Custom 24. Core model with HFS bridge pickup. Mid heavy. Not good for jangly stuff like Beatles or Petty covers. Well it is! Run the Blues Driver on, tone noonish, level at unity and gain 1 o’clock. Now full up the PRS clips choppy and honky. Turn the guitar down like around 6 and instant twang! Hard Day’s Night twang. Full and not spikey thin like a coil tap. This is how I have been able to use that guitar in a variety of situations for twenty years. It is a solid state pedal and sometimes I use it for eq as much as gain. Try it.

Good point here..and since you are showing Boss pedals I have to say that the only time I really liked the tone of Boss pedals was on a Roland amp. You might have noticed an amp that looks like a Roland on Bosses manuals

I have the Behringer clone of the Mega Distortion, called the Heavy Distortion, and its easily one of my favorite dirt pedals! Glad to see the circuit getting some love!

GOOD tips Bri! Pedals will always react differently in different amps! Still you seemed to have too much low end flub to that sound! Might want to dial back some more low freqs on that amp! Most Fenders are very bassy sounding!

Deluxe reverbs take pedals great. If you have a good pedal you can play anything through it. I use mine for anything from country to rock and can get metal depending on the pedal you use.

Gain-staging is always a matter of not only setting cascaded gain stages to achieve the headroom (or lack thereof) that gets you the sound qualities you want, but also shaping the bandwidth appropriately. Keep in mind that overdriving one stage with a preceding one (or two!) will yield additional harmonic content due to clipping. When you start out with too much harmonic content and use *that* to push a subsequent gain stage, harmonic of harmonics are generated, and not always in the proportions you want. Equally important, the note fundamentals can get perceptually lost in that harmonic haze. Often, what we tend to call "transparency" is the ability to still hear the individual notes making up a chord. Removing some of the top end from the initial, or boosted, signal before it hits the amp can assist with this. Conversely, one of the reasons why beginning "bedroom warrior" guitar players will use a fuzz as their first pedal is because all the "harmonic haze" it produces makes individual notes indistinguishable, and lets the novice player sound (to themselves at least) like a whole band, complete with crashing cymbals. Eventually they learn that, when playing with others, one needs less distortion than you think, and needs to tame the treble more than you'd do in your bedroom.

Just as there are optical illusions that fool the eye, so too are there audio illusions that fool the ear. One of these is the brightness added by double-tracking guitars. Another is the perceived but not really there distortion of multitracked guitars. A new player who doesn't know about these phenomena can be forgiven for wicking up the distortion in order to try to cop theirs heroes' tones. It often takes a while to learn that compression and sustain are what is (probably) desired rather than out-and-out distortion. Plus trying to sound like an entire band, too, of course. I've caught myself doing that.

I use my MD-2 into a Hot Rod Deluxe like a TS: volume all the way up, barely any gain, tone to taste. Hated it in my early 20s, love it in my mid-30s.

@@johnlewis8527 From the Under Lock and Key album 1985. I have seen them live at least 5 times before Don and George started having their personality conflicts. They opened at least 3 of the shows with Unchain the Night. Black stage with George doing the opening lick. I am very familar with the early Dokken stuff.

I like the MD-2 pedal a lot, but the "low" frequency is awful, so turning that all the way down produces some really cool tones, messing with the High, Gain, and Distortion.

So essentially plug it in and twist knobs until you get the sound you like!
