Definitely something to avoid is heavily scented litter. A close friend had recently adopted a cat from a local shelter. Several months later her cat seemed to be getting quite ill, vomiting frequently, and finally quit eating. While he was at the vet being examined she reviewed over and over what changed in their home that could have caused the illness. It finally hit her - she had changed litter to one scented with Febreze. I had just read a few weeks before about the bad effects this could have on cats and told her about it. She got rid of the new litter and went to an unscented one. After her cat was stabilized at the vet, he returned home and did not experience any further problems. Cats are FAR more sensitive to odors than we mere humans. What smells pleasant to us can be the equivalent of drowning in a perfume vat to them. Always use unscented litters if possible, or ones with as little perfumey scent as possible.

Great video - easy to understand and covered all the basics. In my house there are six cats - 4 "home" cats and 2 long term fosters who I'm beginning to accept may be permanent. After three years the home cats and the fosters STILL do not get along and fights break out, so I've had to set up the house thusly: There are 8 litterbox equivalents in the house. There are four downstairs, two more upstairs in one bathroom, and a large double-size one in another. Except for the double-size, all of them are the large Nature's Miracle two-piece covered boxes. I used to have open pan boxes but one of the home cats has a peculiar problem - she squats to pee but then once she begins, her hind legs slowly piston upwards until the stream is going over the side and out the box. I had to convert to closed stations to minimize the mess. I selected the Nature's Miracle brand because it seemed to be the only brand that fit together in such a way that urine sprayed inside the upper cover would run down INTO the pan and not out the mating edges. The large size gives them plenty of room in which to maneuver. There are two upstairs in a bathroom, with one in the tub. Somebody kept deciding that it was a good idea to hop in the tub and pee in there occasionally, so I figured if that's where they wanted to go, I'd give them a proper box. The box is simply removed and the tub bottom flushed of any stray litter before use. Improper elimination had become a problem but it seems the issue was the constant conflict between the two groups. So now, during the day the two groups are allowed to mingle. In the evening, the home cats are fed downstairs and the fosters are fed upstairs while shut in the master bedroom suite. They have their food and the huge double-size box to use. This eliminates overnight conflicts between the two groups in the dark and now the improper voiding seems to be minimal. Yay!

Speaking of kittens going in side by side! I close mine out of the room with their litterbox* to fully empty and clean it (I learned after the first time this is NOT possible for them to do with them in the room, because they really want to “help” and generally cause havoc), as well as to take the opportunity to fully vacuum the whole room properly (they get upset about the noise of the Dyson on normal mode so I’ve just been using it on low while they’re in the same room), and sometimes I use that same “maintenance window” to also mop the whole floor too (it’s the combined living room/WFH office/kitchen/dining room). I must have timed it really badly this one time, because when I was done and opened the door back up, they both RUSHED in and made a bee-line for the box. They were going through a phase where they both really loved to torment the other one in and around the litterbox which I was trying to discourage, and I thought that’s what was going on at first… but I guess they both just really needed to go, and I couldn’t stop the one going right in after the other! I’ve got the Catit Jumbo hooded box, and so I opened up the top to give them some more space and to see what was going on… just in time to see my girlcat peeing right on my boycat’s floofy Maine Coon tail 🙈 He was clearly preoccupied and didn’t even notice, and seemed confused about why I was getting in there and doing things with his tail - trying to get it out of the firing line! 😹 then shaking it off and trying to pat it dry with kitchen paper towels before he was done and went sweeping his pee-soaked tail all throughout the flat 😬😂 I think they were probably 4 months old at the time (6 months now) and that’s the only time they’ve both used the box together (other than one time near to when I first brought them home when they were a lot smaller), and I’m happy for that to be a one off 😅 * I do need to add a second tray at this point… I started out with just one big box initially as they’re littermates, after discussing with the breeder - I could only get hold of one properly large box that was in stock before they came home with me, and I definitely didn’t want to waste money and plastic on a second one that would be too small for them when fully grown that I’d only need to replace later. Plus my flat is fairly small so there weren’t an abundance of obvious locations to put a second one (I also need to do some decluttering and get rid of some old boxes of stuff! Jettisoning old things in favour of making space in order to make my cats happier and more comfortable is a no brainer 😊) They’ve also been using only the Catsan Hygiene Plus non-clumping litter for the first 6 months of their life on purpose (it was what they were used to for their whole young lives and the breeder strongly recommended keeping them on this until they were at least 6 months old). This litter is great for not tracking all throughout my home like sand because the granules are generally a fair bit bigger (plus the rubbery lattice mat I’ve put outside the box catches a lot of it when they exit), and there are no smells in or around the box at all for maybe 5 days because it’s all absorbed (assuming I’m scooping at least once per day)… but if I were using a clumping litter then with the daily scooping I’d be removing essentially all of the smell-causing elements, and wouldn’t have to totally dump out the whole contents every 5-8 days (depending… I haven’t figured out yet what it depends on, but it does depend!), and could probably more easily find a spot to put a non-covered extra tray that was still big enough for them. Though one of mine is a fervent digger, so I am concerned that with a non-covered tray he’d just be chucking it all over the sides until there was nothing left inside and mounds of litter outside! 🙀😹 Them just having turned 6 months old, and me being keen to add a second tray, is absolutely why I’m on litter-related videos at the moment to look for a solution ☺️ I’ve just been catsitting for my neighbours’ two Ragdoll cats for the last two weeks, and they have a very small-grained clumping litter - the damn stuff becomes a layer across the top of the entire floor *very* quickly, and I find that super annoying! …I’ve absolutely gone way off topic as a reply to this comment (especially as the only connecting point was the two kittens going in together thing 🫢) and I apologise! Apparently I get over-enthused about cat-litter when my ADHD meds have worn off 🫠 I also love the deer shot, and was looking for comments that mentioned it! So many just have no reference to it at all… it’s a freaking deer just casually seen through the windows! Spot the big city dweller, where the only wildlife seen through the windows are birds, squirrels in the trees (I live right next to a park), or urban foxes 😊

When I was around 7 or 8 I started spraying perfume in my cat's litter box every time I changed it. He started going outside the box, my mom was afraid he had a UTI and we did not have much money. I can remember hearing her say it didn't make any sense the cat had never gone outside the box and we hadn't changed litter, we weren't doing anything different.....I volunteered my brilliant perfume idea. What do you know another cleaning/scrubbing and some fresh litter - problem solved, and lesson learned. His name was Snoops, he was my first cat and I still miss him.

Thanks Mallory! Something I figured out from observing my cats is to spread out the litter boxes around the house and not have them cooped up in the same corner of the room. Especially when the cats are extra spicy, the less dominant cat may be too fearful of approaching the litter boxes if the other feline is standing around nearby, so they'll find somewhere else to go. P.S. I was wondering if you found the following idea helpful. Kitten season is rapidly approaching and I know that coming across a cat in need could be a likely scenario for some parts of the country. In the event a person finds a cat and a Vetenarain isn't available, or if it's the middle of the night and there isn't an overnight animal shelter open, what should that person do? I think a video detailing some inexpensive but invaluable products that go hand in hand with the more common issues to watch out for (safely cleaning eye gunk, flea combing, isolating in case of transmitable diseases, spotting any cuts, or signs of infection, etc.) would be really good to know! I can't think of any other channel that could voice the product aspect and caring for animals better than yours!

On the suggestion of someone in the comment section in one of your other videos, I started using a 3 feet by 2 feet mortar pan that anyone can buy at a home improvement store. It works out really well! I put in almost 80lbs of litter in it at a time. I also bought the litter-lifter off of their website, and it is really good. My cat is super happy about the situation. :) If you need, you can buy an even bigger mortar pan and use even more litter if you want to. They are made of plastic but they still work out very well. Since you do litter all the time, you should try it and see what you think, Mallory. If you clean it though, and get a huge mortar pan, you are cleaning out this huge thing. I went to Lowe's.

I might add that it is instinctive for cats not to like drinking water near their food bowls either. I always wondered why our cat always went to the dog's bowl to drink water, which is about 8 feet away from her own bowl, rather than drink from the one that was right next to her food. I recently found out that this was the reason.

Our dogs were always so perturbed by the cats drinking their water. They allowed it without protest, but you could tell they just didn't understand why the cats couldn't use their own bowl. Maybe it's this, or maybe it's just taunting, but it's good to know.

Cats also go outside the litter box because they're sick. My last cat has FLUTD, and he was a male so he had to have an operation to remove his genitalia. It's a horrible disease that cats get, usually worse for males, and is one of the reasons cats end up living out their lives in shelters. The first thing to consider is that the cat is sick, that is, has a physical issue.

Another brilliant video and well said about the 'returned cats', all too frequently we tend to humanise the type and placement of litter boxes. A neighbour of ours was rushed into hospital with an acute condition that came on in a matter of minutes. She asked my wife and myself to see to her cats and when we got there it was evident their litter hadn’t been cleaned in weeks. I don’t want to be too harsh on her as she has some pretty serious mental health issues going on but this state was unfair to the cats. I don’t know if not cleaning out the litter daily can be counted as a 'mistake' but please keep their litter clean. Also, when changing the litter in a multi-cat household put some of the old litter back, those scents are imperative to cats, especially if the cats are unrelated and don't have a shared scent.

My Nehemiah had 4 litter boxes at first. He started using some for only #1 and some for only #2. It was also a lot of work scooping and refreshing them. Now he has 3 and I think he is happy. He has one upstairs and two downstairs. With 3 liter boxes the litter lasts longer as well. Sometimes he goes Zen in the litter and gets it all over the place. I guess that's part of having a cat.

Hi! I love your videos and your presentation. I have read much about covered boxes and Jackson Galaxy isn't a fan. However, I have a voluptuous glossy black beauty that choose to pee standing up. She isn't spraying, she just doesn't squat. I need boxes that are at least 12"-14" high with just enough of an opening for her ample hips to fit in. She's only about 12.5 pounds, but she looks larger. And if the litter box has a seam in it or comes apart then I have to make sure the inside part is inside, bought one once and her pee got on the wall and then ran out the back and under the box and somebody needs a new floor now! ARGH! Any words of wisdome?

The day I had changed her litter on a travel day though she just seemed lost, and seemed like she would never use the box. Great video. I grew up in a multi-cat household but my parents always insisted on having 1-2 (kitten-sized) litter boxes in the basement. Of course the cats did not use the litterboxes consistently and then my parents would get mad at the cats! They used my brother's closet as their litterbox and he grew to dislike cats. The litterboxes were too few, not placed on each level and too small to begin with. I had no idea this was the reason for the cats not using the litterboxes until I stumbled onto PetTube as an adult. Today I have 2 kittens. They are quickly outgrowing their kitten-sized litterboxes so I'm in the market for new ones.

Awesome content! Litter box issues is what prompted my hubby to adopt a cat for me. Lol. Poor thing was returned to the shelter because of "litter box and litter tracking" issues, and it broke his heart since that he felt was something we could easily work on with her. When I got her, she was perfectly fine using the litter box. Everything you've mentioned, I totally agree with you. The unscented litter was a huge change. With scented litter, in comparison, it actually smelled WORSE. I thought it was her pee! But when I switched it all went away. I got her a box with slightly higher sides and a low entry and placed it on a litter mat to catch tidbits. Tracking litter was no longer a problem. She lived 11 happy years with us until she went home over the rainbow bridge. Now my new fur-baby Lucky we went through 3 boxes to find out he needed a BIIIG box (even though he's a smaller build), no side guards/cover. Yes, there's more litter out the box these days, lol, but nothing a small broom & hand vac can't help me with! It's been a year since he came home to us and not ONCE have we had any issues and absolutely NO smell (Tidy cats Free & Clean). I agree, no liners! They can scratch them up and get plastic bits in their paws that they might 'clean off' and ingest. Also, urine and poop can get leaked into any tears. You might not realize it, then it's just a full on hot stinky dumpster mess, and you hate your cat for no fault of their own.

Re the height, and opening: My female cat pees standing, and without high sides, she sprays outside the litter box. Boxes with 3 high sides and a lower entrance didn't work - that was always where she aimed. I went through at least 5 types of boxes before settling on a very tall one with top entrance. Yes, top. She jumps up, climbs in, and has no problems. it would be easy to add a ramp or stairs if she couldn't easily manage. But she ALWAYS used whatever litter and box I tried (at least 4 types of litter) - never a problem there, so the only issue was keeping her urine in the box. The current combination has been workable and stable for about a year, using a corn-husk based litter.

I had to get a mega covered litter box that has a high back and high top, because my cat is a vertical pee-er. Yes he loves to raise his tushy and pee upward and no he doesn't have trouble peeing, he's a typical tuxedo 4 year old cat. I also now use Dr. Elseys multi cat unscented litter (blue and white 40 lb bag) in it. My cat really loves the litter a lot. We switched from the Tidy Cats free andclean, because the litter went downhill and we were not happy with it anymore. My cat really likes his litter box, because he has lots of room to move around in it. I did have to take the plastic lid off, but that's about it. It's very easy to clean and I do a complete clean when I change his litter box, which is every 3 months give or take a week or something. Thank you for stressing about what works other people's cats. I bought a big storage box to use as a litter box. One of my cats was peeing on my bed and pooped in front of the litter box. I found out it was because there was only one entrance to the litter boxes and it was inside of a closet which made them feel threatened by the other cat. This also made them fight a lot. Since I changed that they are a lot more chill. I also changed from wooden pallets litter to normal clay litter. I feel like the cats didn't like the feel on it's paws. I need some advice. I have a single cat household and have been using Okocat Soft litter, but since my kitty eats wet food only she pees gallons and the litter is just not capable of clumping around her giant pee puddle. The Okocat is good for odor control (smells like sawdust), but it's very dusty and doesn't work so well for a cat who pees more than she poops. I have been researching alternatives to the Okocat, even considering toilet training her but I don't want to stress her out. There has to be a better way than what I'm dealing with. I'm disabled and can barely keep up with scooping and when I'm in too much pain, I have to just rotate in another litter box and take the dirty one to the garage until I'm able to clean it. Help!

Get better litter! Okocat is one of the least absorbent and effective products I've tried. I think you'll prefer Smartcat or Sustainably Yours. Good luck!

@@AllAboutCatsYT I just got a small box of Dr. Elsey's Hard Clumping Litter and some of the disposable sifting boxes to try this morning. I almost fell over trying to pick up the box of litter, though. WAY heavier than Okocat. I hope it's not dusty. I will give Smartcat and Sustainably Yours a try as well. Thank you very much for your suggestion. I have another question: Is there a way that's better than her going in the box since it's mostly urine that's the issue?

OMG YOU WERE 100% RIGHT ABOUT THE SUSTAINABLY YOURS!!! It's changed my life and I've had cats since I was a kid for 30 years. Sustainably Yours Large Grain is miraculous!! NO dust, NO tracking, ROCK HARD pee clumps and NO ODOR!! I don't know what kind of dark magic this is using, but even the poop has ZERO odor until I uncover it with the scoop (then it's atrocious cuz my cat eats wet food). The litter has no odor itself, so no perfume to upset my kitty or my asthma and is probably one of the most amazing products I've ever discovered. Totally worth the expensive price tag. For me it's costly cuz my cat pees icebergs, but for normal people whose cats eat dry food and have small pee clumps, this will change your life AND the litter lasts a LONG time cuz it retains zero odor after the poop is removed. THANK YOU!!

When I rescued my cat, she refused to go pee in the box.... For years. Tried everything. Ended up using puppy pads in the area she peed in. When I moved into a flat, much smaller than the house, she used the box straight away for both pees and poos. Last year, moved into a larger house, again, used the litter box straight away

I’ve read the get a new litter box each year. What are your thoughts on this? I have two cats that I wash and change out their litter weekly. I’d be interested in buying the tuft and paw litter box but at that price and to buy a new one so often is a little steep.

I bought a open litter box because most videos recommend it. But my cat always get the litter everywhere. I mean it has got much better after I switched litter from fine clay to tofu little kind of texture but he still got three sides around the box he can get it out.. if I got a box with lid I felt like at least the litter can be caught all together in front of entrance

In your opinion what is the best cat litter? Regular or the gel kind?

As an experiment when I bought my two cats recently I got one open litter box, and one with a lid, just to make sure that they wouldn't be left with only options they dislike. But one of them refuses to use the open litter box, which surprised me a bit since what I've often heard is that cats prefer the open ones. He's very scared though, and has found a shelf in the closet where he hides most of the day, so I guess he feels safer with the lid on. The other one uses both, so I think she just picks the one that's closest. 'I'm still working with the trust issues even after more than a month, and he runs every time he sees me, so it's a bit of a struggle. I can feed him treats while he's in the closet, but otherwise he won't get close. 😢

Don't give up hope. My cat was adopted from Humane Society and had been there a long time as she was an adult. She was so depressed she hid in my walk in closet for almost a year, only came out to eat and go. Then one day she came out, started following me around and teasing for scratches. I do believe they get depressed and time will often cure it. Lots of time...

Best thing I've ever done is to place our XXL litter box into a huge clear plastic tote with entrance and exit holes. No more gates or hidden boxes to keep the dogs out and no more outside of the box incidents.

I use the biggest low sided plastic box that I could find and that would fit in the spot. My cat is a VERY wide scratcher even if she's so small. Even with the big box, the still scratch the sides when she tries to hide the poop. But she loves it. I never find pee stuck on the sides like it was the case with all the previous litters that I used.

I am a new subscriber with two sister cats that are almost 2 years old that were part of a litter of 6. They learned from moment one that there was only one litter box so now at my house, they have always used one litter box and after almost 2 years of ownership they seem happy with it. I started with clay litter but found it way to dusty and switch to ground up walnut shells called Naturally Fresh. Not as dusty as clay but still far from dust free. At least with walnut shells, once cleaned of waste, it can be toss on the ground to dispose of it

Does anybody know what causes bald heels or ankles on a cat??
@racheljohnstone9574
2 жыл бұрын
I'm just guessing but it could be either, just wear from them walking strangely or some type of scarring, my flat mates cat has a "scar" literally just a bald spot that started as a wound. I would definitely be asking the vet tho it could be a skin/fur condition.

I don't have foreign friends, and I don't even know their preferences. Most of them prefer big or small pets, because pet toys are more difficult to choose. Buyers will also choose products. At first, he may think this is good, but After buying it, it was found that it was not suitable, so it was regarded as a product return. As a result, the product was damaged during transportation, or it was not used for a long time at the beginning, and the method and method were found to be wrong. Some people have patience, but There are indeed often not read the manual. The products I want to develop will be as follows. I don't know if I want to do electronic products or ordinary products.

I use an under bed storage box. The lid goes under the 'litter box' to protect from excess litter as he gets out. It is large, low to get in, I keep a scatter mat under and in front of it. Works great. I have it under my bathroom sink with a little curtain to hide it. He loves it there. Digs to the moon in there. One thing I tell friends when moving with a cat. Always take a bit of used litter and poop in a zip lock baggie to place into the litter box in the new house or apartment. The trauma is less and in one case, my friend with the 'freak out spastic wild' hate to move cat...was perfectly fine. She said it was a miracle. Cats like to find their own litter and the smell helps.:)

Another thing to note about training a cat to use a human toilet is that it’s not great for marine life! Flushing cat feces & litter is actually illegal in California due to toxoplasma gondii and not well advised everywhere else.

That's really unusual to hear. I just retired from a public utility and there are no such restrictions in Texas. I'm of the impression this is a "California thing", but then maybe the use of particular wastewater treatment methods are also restricted there, resulting in a domino effect of declining treatment effectiveness. Over here, after suspended solids have been settled out of the wastewater and the beneficial bacteria have broken down remaining organics, the water is treated with chlorine to disinfect it or passes through an ultraviolet light chamber. Additional chemicals are then added to neutralize the chlorine and the resulting water is then released into a creek or river, cleaner even than the natural surface water. Alternately, some of the water can be diverted for irrigation to paying customers. In one case, ALL the resulting outflow of one treatment plant went directly to a large pond in a subdivision that then used the water as needed for irrigating a golf course.

Very informative! My cat likes the basic heavy gravelly litter and not the light stuff; you’re right about that. And she hates perfumes of any description (except catnip). She likes her litter deep so she can dig around in it. Added bonus is I’ve noticed that it’s not dusty at all, so we both like it! I’ve just bought a new litter box, bigger than the last but could’ve gone bigger. Will take a look at your offer.

You have to train them to use them... if its too late to teach them to use it.. if they normally just go outside and do it on the grass or dirt, then use those two in the litter boxes first so they get familiar...
