Great video! I only have 2 fig trees at this time, but have been cautious and watching them. One has had some leaf "rust" while the other one is healthy, so far. I have not yet up-planted them to a larger container, but have begun to wonder what to expect as fall approaches. Thanks for this timely piece on fig trees.

I’m falling in love with fig trees. I have a small Italian Honey and I believe she started getting root rot and was also stressed. I believe I watered her too much during our recent heat wave in PA. Her roots have some off white good roots and some darker brown / orange rusty roots. I treated her and reported. I pray she recovers.
@BACKYARDGARDENER

Make sure you have a well draining soil figs do not like to be sappy wet. Use a potting mix not potting soil. I hope you are Italian honey recovers💞🌱

Thanks so much for this video! I recently bought a fig tree. I transplanted into a large pot. It is stood against a south facing wall, in full sun (in the Netherlands). Leaves started turning yellow and dropping off. After that, many of the remaining leaves started curling and then dropping off. I don’t really know whether or not it needs more or less water.

What about a new cutting that was just up-potted? I can't remember where it came from, but now in Louisiana I'm sure I have more humidity than where it came from. They look splochy yellow, but they're not dropping yet.
@BACKYARDGARDENER
3 жыл бұрын
With new cuttings humidity is good for the cutting. it keeps it moist but you have to be careful and overwatering and make sure you have plenty of drainage holes in your container or cup. If you have leaves on that cutting cut them all off. so the energy can focus on getting your roots at the bottom and not focus on keeping those leaves green. they will grow back

We are in central Texas and had our tree in the ground since before January. It came out dormancy with a lush set of green leaves. Fast forward to now the leaves are turning yellow and falling off. We water deep once a week. Also apply Jobes 3-5-5 organic fruit tree fertilizer about a cup every two months. Although we had forgotten to fertilize recently. The tree is in the ground but gets natural shade in the afternoon from an adjacent tree. Is it possible the heat is responsible? It’s been over 100 for the last two weeks. Curious if we should be watering more often. We have two other trees in the same line (plum,pomegranate )that are doing fine with the same fertilizer and watering regimen. Plenty of folks in the neighborhood grow in their yard so I know the conditions are okay. We applied fertilizer this past weekend and seeing if it bounces back. Any ideas? Different fertilizer? 10-10-10 ? Or more water?
@BACKYARDGARDENER

For some reason the Fig Tree could be getting stress. Mulch around the bottom of the tree very good to help retain its moisture. As funny as it may sound it could be getting too much water.
@thepiecesfit5049

I wanted to report back that a fertilizer application and switching water frequency to twice a week and the tree is bouncing back. Ton of new green leaf growth. Seems like this is the right track to recovery. Thanks!

Very good information, I have been growing figs now for a little over one year and I'll tell you that I got bit by the "collection bug", I now have over 75 fig trees and I hope to add maybe 15 more after the new year. Many first-timers hear that figs are from an arid area and that they don't require much water, well depending on your location and many other things their over-all heath is dependent upon you providing everything that they need if they are in containers, I hope to try placing a few in ground next year but only if I have more than one of that variety. Good luck with your figs. Gitfiggywitit65.
