Arenal, in central Costa Rica, includes La Fortuna, Lake Arenal and the small town of Nuevo Arenal, one of Costa Rica’s best kept secrets. We are in love with this area of Costa Rica because of the weather and rich countryside. There is so much to do, like boating, sailing, fishing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, kiteboarding, and kayaking. There are hanging bridges and waterfalls yet for us to see.
We stayed at a beautiful Airbnb just outside of Nuevo Arenal and enjoyed the changing weather and sunsets. It was January and nearly every day it rained at least a little, but usually just for a short time and then it would clear and be sunny. The variety of birds we saw were amazing and entertaining while enjoying meals and breathtaking sunsets on the patio. Always the sunsets….
We traveled to La Fortuna several times and were entertained by a band of young coatis playing in the road. We hiked through Arenal Volcano National Park on a rare day when the volcano was visible. Then. we splurged and luxuriated one night at Baldi Hot Springs , a beautiful resort with 25 pure hot springs and waterfalls. Dinner that evening in La Fortuna, was at Skipper’s House a local restaurant specializing in tasty seafood preparations and creative cocktails. While I enjoyed a relaxing spa day, Aaron spent the afternoon with his drone in downtown La Fortuna enjoying ice cream and chocolates. Later that evening, we enjoyed a delightful meal at Toucan Alley just outside of La Fortuna on the incredible Lake Arenal. Our last night was spent at La Rana German restaurant on Lake Arenal, where the owner fed the colorful local birds right in front of our table.
