She once stated that when she was young, she was a better singer than most of the girls today...she wasn't lying... she really was.
@Dion_Mustard
3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. She was certainly one of the greatest soul singers of the early 60s if not the Best! You cannot argue with that range and power. She's certainly my favourite. However there were also some astounding soul singers around during that time who were equally as gifted and some would say on a par with Aretha such as Etta James...no one could sing like Etta...then you had singers like Dee Dee Warwick (sister of Dionne), also phenomenal though virtually unheard of..Ruth Brown is another. Then there were singers like Baby Washington & Betty Lavette - both virtually unheard of but amazing soul singers. And of course not forgetting the Motown greats like Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Gladys Knight. etc. Aretha stands out the most in my opinion.

being jamaican we never relied on radio stations to determine which songs are great , we recognise quality when we hear it , i. e. JOHNNY NASH 'S D0N'T TAKE AWAY YOUR LOVE , and many others , we made them hits in our dance halls and clubs and didin't much care what the rest of the world thought , so it's no wonder we have our music category at the grammy's , love & peace .
