@skips007 Yep. The base Atom doesn't have any type of launch or traction control, so it would operate like a normal standard car. They recommend launching in 2nd gear because there is no traction in 1st gear and it's super short (when trying to go for an aggressive launch).

@kosamf Newmatic means it uses air. so basically it's using air to switch gears. And he would have to use the clutch if he's taking off from a dead stop (which they never show) and even just going through gears it wouldn't be a bad idea to use the clutch

@buttnut1080 I think you need to search wikipedia for "sequential manual gearbox". An automatic (with a torque converter) and paddles does NOT make a sequential gearbox. The Atom box is a sequential manual dog gearbox like a bike, that's why it can shift so quickly.

@Raffo78910 The clutch has other uses than gear changes you are probably going to get quicker launches for a start, you can also feather the clutch to get the revs up and back in the powerband (ahem... not probably necessary for this car though.), could save your life in the event of a jammed throttle. I really think I would be using the clutch on downchanges to smooth them out a bit, besides using the clutch has to be more sypathetic to the gearbox.

@TheOfficialKC Your right, my bad. Apparently they only used the RS engine in its development (the first one off in '07) but the Hartley engine replaced it for production. I thought both the Caterham and the Atom used the same mill, but the Cat's is even s/c'ed.

@routhoula Performance is not measured by 0-60 times! Most high-powered cars are traction limited when it comes to standing start acceleration, more power simply means more wheelspin until the car has a decent forward velocity. Once the Atom V8 gets into 2nd gear, it will out-gun ANY production car (and most race cars) until very high speed where it becomes aero limited.

@aerlingus18 It would sound better if the test driver had gone anywhere near the 10600rpm limit. The Millbrook hill course does not allow this car to stretch it's legs, and the driver would be under strict orders not to bend it. I've experienced this car first-hand while we were doing some paddleshift development, and beleive you me, it sounds awsome. It's also extremely fast - at over 150mph in 6th gear it was still accelerating about as hard as your average 'hot-hatch' does in 1st gear!

@kosamf You still use the clutch to pull away as you couldn't just click it in to gear and go as it's not an auto box I've checked this out it definitely is a clutch peddle!! I see what your saying but one example off the top of my head is Damon Hill always used a foot operated clutch in the Williams grand prix car when most of the other drivers used hand operated ones!!! But in the case of the atom they have gone for a foot operated clutch/hand shift arrangement don't know why!!

@plinsavi Using the clutch does not give more control. On the contrary, if you have the car finely balanced in a corner on the throttle and dip the clutch to change gear then you will immediately be thrown off line, possibly leading to a loss of control. What I mean by "when conditions dictate" is that it's often not possible to shift when a car is in a certain dynamic condition. e.g. balanced under braking into a tightening corner. I suggest you go drive a race car before making assumptions.

@TheOfficialKC The engine IN THIS was built by Russell Savory.. AKA RS Performance, of Essex.. Its British. I guess you could call it Japanese too because it was developed by casting two 4 cylinder Japanese bike engines (honda i think, there are others that use Suzuki like the V8 in the Radical SR8, also British, Powertec RPA) into one block with a common crank.
