wasn't "elder sign" supposed to be the 45min arkham experience?

Yes come up but it failed period I used to own everything for it but I realised that just takes too long and it's too clunky for what it is and it's too slow paced for what it is

Elder sign takes me an hour to solo with three characters...it's thematic, emergent story, and full of drama, pitfalls, and emotional roller coaster..., throw some cthulu ambient on youtube and it's a win every time!! Well..everybody fucking dies though...but I love the ride

I like this one better. I think there is a bit more strategy than Mr. Garcia gives this credit for (especially the solo variant), and more replayability.

I completely agree with this assessment... however, I think the feeling of helpless randomness fits perfectly into what the game is trying to accomplish. Final Hour is trying to replicate those last few turns of a game of AH during which things have gone beyond bad-to-worse and now border on catastrophic. The amount of control FH gives you is about as much as you have at that point in AH. Personally I do like it for how it goes about doing what it sets out to do. That said, I’m glad play time is nice and short. More than an hour and I probably would get bored and give up. My biggest gripe is that it’s overpriced for the content. I seem to remember Elder Sign running $30 or $35 and you get a lot more out of that.

I can see what most of what he's saying but, and only watching it be played, the action selection method and the way the cards have two distinct outcomes to be resolved (with the added omen signs to consider) really seems to be a legitimate and interesting solution to take the "alpha-gamer" issue. It may not be fully realized but there is something there that I wouldn't mind see being expanded upon.

Just buy Elder Sign and the Gates of Arkham expansion. That's a much better version of Arkham Horror condensed into around an hour.

I'm surprised that Zee scored this game as a 5/10 being that this game is essentially a cross between witch of Salem and pandemic, both of which feature highly on his best cooperative game list. Yes it's random but this game really shines when played solo as there is much more control over the action priority. I have been really enjoying it but I don't think FFG will be releasing many (if any) expansions / character packs based on the overwhelming poor reviews. I'm happy to be in the minority though.

I’m with you Neil, absolutely love it. And love bringing it out to the table. Feels like a lot of the reviews are “it looks ugly therefore bad game” Personally I don’t even think it looks THAT bad, sure it could be a bit cleaner, but to me it does feel like the “final hour” other players are tripping over each other trying to frantically get this riddle solved, someone accidentally activated a zone that’s crucial for survival, I honestly find it really enjoyable and rated it an 8.5.

It’s a weird twist on Pandemic Cthulhu... the weird twist makes it unenjoyable and random though. Yet another coop game trying to make people talk and interact less.

This feels kinda one sided review, I don't understand where the "game is spitting out random stuff" argument comes form. You see the monsters, you can expect whats gonna happen next. I actually like the card-action system, I personally dont like pandemic like coop games where there is gonna be one player who tells everyone what the optimal play is, this is eleminated here cause you cant talk while selecting what cards to play. This works pretty well with 2 players. If you dont like the alpha player of pandemic and cant get a group to play 3 hours of arkham horror and would like something lighter I think this is worth trying out.

Thanks for the review, Zee. As someone who is a huge Arkham Files fan and has bought all the related games, this will be the first one I decide to skip. Arkham Horror 2nd edition was my favorite game of all the time while it was new, but with the expansions it was taking longer and longer to set up and play. When Eldritch Horror came out, it became my new favorite, but I was really disappointed by the last expansion and the half-assed campaign mode. None of the others have really captivated me very well. The LCG came close, but I don't like having to constantly rebuild a deck every time I want to play as a different character. I'm hoping I enjoy Arkham Horror 3rd edition more as more expansions come out. But this Final Hour game looks like no fun at all.

I think a 1 hour Arkham is just not possible to have story in a game. They just push that 1hr mark maybe 90 someday I am hoping under 2hrs one day that is the best I can hope for.

I had a similar reaction to it. Plus for the game length, minus for almost everything else. This is part AH, part AH:LCG, part Gloomhaven, part The Mind, part... I dunno, Mastermind, but the all those parts never really click and it all just makes for a random, ugly, themeless experience. I think any other Arkham Files game is a better choice, even Elder Sign.

Fantasy Flight Games could make an "advanced" choose your own adventure book with dice mechanics similar to AH and code words to open and close story paths. Throw in a few tokens and mini die and blamo. . . Wait thats AH the card game in book form.

I'm a bit confused about who this game is for. The simplified mechanics and bright colours makes it look like they're trying to sell Lovecraft to kids. Even then there's a sad lack of any kind of atmosphere that would make it interesting for younger players.

This time I have to disagree with you (only in one aspect). Story/Reading means time. The only way to make Arkham games shorter is getting rid of stories and that not always works, like in Elder Sign for example.

@@Zaidkw their downfall started way before the Asmodee purchase. It started with X-Wing miniatures really (as far as i'm concerned). While X-Wing is indeed a great game, they made so much in terms of profits from that single game that everything from then on was all about mimicking that success. Miniature games upon miniature games, tiny expansion packs that are just about the equivalent of boardgames microtransactions, lack of proper amount of dice in just about all their games, having to purchase twice their base sets because they include only 2 of 3 possible needed cards for their lcgs... Mechanics reused in just about all their games... seriously, the x-wing damage system is now found in almost all their games since 5 years ago. The Gears of War AI system reused in the Mansion of Madness 2 app... Arkham Horror 3 is a collection of best off mechanics all seen before in their own games. Art copy-pasted throughout all their games. The 90s were Game Worshop years. The 2000s were FFG's as they ramped up the quality of boardgames. I'd say the 2010s have been with other companies that have surpased FFG's production quality. Stonemeier comes to mind (even if i personally don't like their games THAT much). Also Iello, Matagot, PlanB/Next Move, CMON... those are the new leaders in term of quality.
