Playlist this as 88 but I know for a fact that I was listening to this on the south side of Chicago in 1986

The label who released this was founded in 1988 so you probably listened to an early unsigned demo record.

@@jimbotron70 no, it wasn't a demo, most of these records were pressed and used in mixes for years before a record label purchased and licensed the right to release them. I've seen records with a supposed release date of 1990 that we were listening to in 1986

I'm not from America, but I can believe there is every chance the OP heard this in 1987. I used to make dance music in the UK (it's the same process). Tracks were pressed onto dub plates initially for select DJ's, then a limited run was pressed, then a full run. Finally after this, if the track does really well, a commercial label might pick it up and press even more records. This process could be spread out from a few months to more than a whole year. The whole point of the process is to gauge interest but also keep tracks scarce at the beginning so there's hype and anticipation from fans who want to get their hands on the vinyls. It definitely worked. Record shops were always buzzing with people trying to pre-order / reserve new stock coming in.

Would this phenomenon is is the fact that much of this music was made in garages on the south side of Chicago and were pressed into records and mixed very early. The 88 label is probably when that record was bought by a record label as opposed to just being played in the neighborhoods where the DJs made them @@jimbotron70

This is a combo 707 and 909. The rim shot, claps, toms, kick, snare, and hi-hat are the 909. The tambourine is the 707. There’s another version of this song that uses the 707 exclusively, so kzitem.info/news/bejne/p653uKxvq36lf2k is what you seek. Peace.
