USMC here (66-70) kinda like Marine Corps boot camp without all the stress. Goals are the same, how they are reached is different. Bottom line…we are all on the same team. Total respect for all branches. Semper Fi!

I’ll never forget the smell of those brand new fatigues. We had the ball cap in 65. Fort Jackson living in tent city, May till July.

Ah, 1963, the year before Army Drill Sergeants replaced Platoon Sergeants as builders of new soldiers.

That's back when the Army wore those olive green uniforms with mix-matching name tags. They wore their uniforms super starched.

One problem is how the ARMY went from E-8s as PLT SERGEANTs/ DRILL SERGEANTS to E-5/E-6 DRILL SGTs, such a huge drop in Experience and Respect for what they earned !!

This was the era I believe that was mostly drafted because from WWII to Korea to eventually after this Nam', they were struggling with able and capable men. My grandfather was drafted in 56' and did two years, couldn't wait to get the hell out. His MOS was 22M maintenance on Nike/Hercules silos. He was in around the time they took anyone and everyone including Elvis.

Moreover, child aid, ( for the wife, if with children) motherhood and child raising allowance, free education and universal health care after the service. Germany and Scandinavia are doing this forever! Advocate, not wishing.

The patches are 6th Army so I would assume somewhere in Texas, but can't think of anywhere they had basic training. I did mine in 63 at Fort Polk, LA.

Must say both theses drill instructors seen in this film addressing the men in his platoon specially the quite moments of getting to know each other seem a fair decent chaps treating his charge with firm but fair and in a respectful manner as human beings instead of screaming down your lug holes like a demented Muppet doesn't motivate me in slightest 👍
