There is quite the history about this, here we go:
The Summer of 2001 my family bought a house in Apex, North Carolina, and I wanted to on some random whim to make a movie with spoutting out random ideas from my head thinking it was going to be some grand Blockbuster movie. There was no grass in our backyard and we lived right next to the "now-been-completed-for-over-a-decade" Apex Peakway that was just a strip of dirt land that seemed to stay in development hell for for the majority of the 2000's.
Army Men: The Movie: "Hunting the Desert Fox" is the product of a 15 year old me with severe ADD, too many war movies, and parents that didn't know what I was up to until it was too late. This was shot on my grandmother's camera (that I think we still have to this day in storage someplace). The Army Men idea came from me playing the old Sarge's Heroes and World War games from 3DO on the Nintendo 64 and Sony Playstation quite a lot, and wanted to make a movie based on those toys.
I somehow gained the support of my neighbor that lived next door to me to hold the camera at one point, and putting my brother through this because i'm the oldest and “Whatever big bro is doing is always cool and a good idea,” so I made him with putting his life in danger with legal North Carolina allowed fireworks to blow up plastic little figures for the sake of our no-budget Blockbuster War Epic. Most of it was done by me doing the voices and handling said fireworks for special effects. Also there is my mom berating me filming the family cat, and the family dog coming into the shot stomping over plastic army guys in our backyard.
I'll say looking back on some of these shots they do look kinda cool for something done on the fly. The black and white footage randomly cut in is from that documentary I mentioned earlier, which is intercut with the Army Men movie because I didn’t know till later making more movies how to properly time the tape on the camcorder to make sure other footage doesn’t slip in. This to me add’s to the charm of this movie.
I made the thing and never really watched it until many years later, where it was so painful to watch I never felt my body cringe so badly. However, to my brother he still believes it's the greatest film ever made, it was part of his childhood. As of this rip this is my third time watching this film, and as much as I cringe I still laugh my absolute butt off.
I’ve for years refused personally to ever show this to anyone, but I figured if my family gets any enjoyment from this, maybe other people will too. I have no idea if this is the worst piece of filmmaking ever done, but maybe I set that bar lower or maybe it is slightly above the worst movie ever made, who knows. It’s a fanfilm after all, it can be as good or bad as I want it to be because I was just having fun making something.
My brother and I have thrown around the idea for a "G-Day" movie for a very long time, and I joked with him "Ok yea if I ever put this online and it becomes popular and we get a bunch of money donated to us then well do G-Day, hahaha." Maybe I did plan on making another movie doing the same thing again, but it never happened and we grew up. Of course, if some Hollywood bigshot wants to throw money my way then i'll see what we can work out.
“USE THE RED LIGHTER!” - You’ll understand this quote when you watch this film. This has been an inside joke in my family for many years and will continue to do so.
