One of the reasons that the Tamiya Euro trucks have poor steering is that the Ackerman steering principle has been reversed. The steering tie rod should be to the rear to achieve the correct Ackerman steering and would require a number of modifications (e.g. moving the steering servo position to the front of the chassis and bending of the steering tie rod to clear the gearbox). The Tamiya American trucks have the gearbox further back on the chassis resulting in the steering tie rod being correctly fitted.

I wish they'd also address the play in all of the steering linkages. Yes, you can replace with better, but you'd think Tamiya would get it right at the start. Thanks for the info!
