The world's attitude and response to the tragedy of October 7th made being a Jew feel very lonely and isolated. In these trying and disheartening times I found myself taking comfort in the words of the immortal Reb Shlomo Carlebach's introduction to his famous song Yisrael Betach Bashem.
In concert right after the Yom Kippur War, Reb Shlomo, as only he could, conveyed into words the collective feeling of a nation that has grown and thrived for millennia despite being like a sheep among seventy wolves.
"Israel has no friends in the world, the holy land, the holy people of Israel are all alone." But, sang Reb Shlomo, "you know what we have, Yisrael Betach Bashem, we have one friend in heaven."
The approaching holiday of Purim brings to mind a teaching of our sages, that Haman's decree was more impactful in strengthening Israel's faith in Hashem, than the collective efforts of our nation's great prophets and prophetesses. In times of calamity and misfortune, we truly realize and internalize the truth that we have no one to lean on but our father in heaven.
This project was many months in the making. First recorded and shot in November, the production encountered some delay. But overall, the project was blessed with incredible divine help and culminated in a production that exceeded my wildest dreams.
