Brilliant bonus video, Johnny…yes please to more like this in the future; there are various Rover tickets around that network that you could possibly utilise for this purpose! Personally I do something similar whenever I’m in Dublin; jumping on and off the Dart and Luas, with my Leap card (Ireland’s equivalent of the Oyster card in London) Hope you had fun with your American Football buddies!

Thanks Roddy. I may well do something similar in Dublin like you next time I'm there. The American footy went well. We came 2nd in our group of six, but lost in the quarter final 🏈

Great vid. River Leven is pronounced Leeven as you eventually thought. And passing the rugby stadium between Jordanhill and Scotstounhill is home of the of one of Scotland’s professional club rugby teams, Glasgow Warriors not Hyndland RFC. Good stuff

I liked the meandering around and I had never heard of the Glasgow roundabout ticket. I could have saved pounds! Presentation to camera worked well, my only disappointment was you didn't find a hostelry. I love the bits where you just have to stop eg Marylebone, or Wemyss Bay. I also enjoy the obscure references: they make me sit up and wonder what's he on about?.

My wife often says "what's he on about?" Pub time would have been around the Loch, and it was slim pickings for a drinker. Had a nice espresso by the water but that just aint the same. I'm in Aberystwyth tomorrow - I'll try to find somewhere!

We ended up at Helensburgh during our Scottish Travels last year as the Oban day trip was scuppered by the reduced timetable, as you say it's very like Exeter-Starcross. Were you 'Scott hunting' when you went to Paisley? You've joined my three main men (Scott, Steve and Mark) for videos to watch, looking forward to seeing many more.

15.21 - "Vintage" (reproduced) hand painted adverts above "The Laurieston" with one in particular depicting an original carriage. The red carriages went out of commission in the mid 70's when the subway was modernised. Artist Ciáran Glöbel began painting graffiti as a youth, before turning his craft into crisply painted lettering for his sign writing company Glöbel Bros Signs.

Why didn't you take a train from Queen Street direct to Balleoch? Did the cruise on Loch Lomond and I think it was called Maid of the Loch but I'm not sure. Queen Street St. was very different when I visited Glasgow in 2014, for the commonwealth games. (It rained heavily during the entire games!) Great vid!

I didn't go direct to Balloch because I also wanted to go along the Clyde to Helensburgh. The Helensburgh train was the first one that came into Queens St, so I started there. Anyway, thank you for watching and for the very kind comment 👍

Leven is pronounced Leeven, yes. There is another River Leven in Fife, that begins in Loch Leven - in Kinross-shire, and empties into the Forth at the town of Leven; plus another (sea) Loch Leven in Argyllshire - at the inner end of which is the town of Kinlochleven! Leven is a gender-neutral name and means, 'Place of the flood'. I assume you're aware that Balloch used to have two stations on the same line that you travelled - neither of which was the present one? Balloch Central, whose mains building is still extant, was a two-side platform affair just north of the former level crossing that was to the immediate north of the present Balloch Station; while Balloch Pier was just under a mile further on. Both survived into the 1980s and so, the line was electrified throughout, although most trains terminated at Balloch Central. Those that continued to the pier station connected with Loch Lomond steamer/ferry services and indeed, until the West Highland Railway to Fort William opened in 1897, formed part of a rail/steamer/coach passenger service to/from mid-Argyll & Oban - in competition with the Caledonian Railway route to Oban, which ran via Dunblane and Killin Junction to Crianlarich, from 1880 to 1965! It is also worthy of note that from 1894 to 1964, there was a third rail route between Glasgow and Bowling to connect with the previously isolated Caledonian & Dunbartonshire Joint Railway, that included the branch to Balloch, from 1865. Prior to the construction of this route, steamers had connected to it from Central Glasgow, running up the Clyde to and from Bowling). Often referred to as the 'Riverside' line, this is now mostly converted to a cycle-path and/or roads, running from near Whiteinch through Scotstoun, Yoker Ferry and Clydebank and much closer to the Clyde; although it crossed the extant, former North British Railway route at Bowling, where there was a High Level station in addition to the existing one. The two met half a mile or so to the west and, because the NBR route ran through land earmarked for bonded warehouses, it is the original GCD route that approaches Dumbarton itself - the old rival route running slightly to the north of it along what are now residential streets. Until the railways were nationalised in 1947, this part of the route and the Balloch line were jointly operated by the two rival companies... You should also be aware that the overall roof at Paisley Gilmour Street only dates from the early 2000s - each of the platforms had traditional fringed canopies up until then.

Thank you so much for that very comprehensive comment - much appreciated. I really should have included something about the two Balloch stations and I was completely unaware that the roof at Paisley was so new. 👍
