For sure! Having spent quite a bit of time with them on Yap, I can tell you that they are first-rate world cruisers!

I was watching this to find out about Jeanneau's going around the world but loosing the rudder is an absolute disaster for any boat and has caused a few vessels to be abandoned at sea. I am not sure I would want to take a production boat like the Jeanneau's around the the world like this, probably prefer finding and older Amel or something. Great video really enjoyed it and what a great couple..

Hi Shawn, I appreciate your comment. As luck would have it, Hilma happens to be here in Annapolis and we were talking about their losing the rudder and how we were able to outfit them with a new one in fairly short order. Because Oskar and Lisa have now sailed their Sun Odyssey 45 over 35,000 miles, they are well versed with all that comes with owning and living aboard a production boat. I’m sure they would be happy to answer any questions you might have. And you’re right, they are a great couple! Onwards...

Great video Paul. It's great that you share stories about sailors buying previously owned Jeanneau yachts. We love the new line on the market but they are not easily affordable for many sailors. However there are many older Jeanneau models that are great too. Thanks for sharing this real story. Keep them coming as many of us countdown to liveabord life and look for inspiration.

Glad you are enjoying them Cedric! Having been a successful boat builder now for over 60 years, Jeanneau literally has thousands upon thousands of boats out there (power and sail) enjoying life on the water. So many stories to tell, so little time!

Great video Paul with the exception that Yap is actually in the north Pacific, 10 degrees north of the equator :)

One Jeanneau sailboat right here, currently in Sydney, Australia! We are one of the many sailing couples, also KZitemrs, and we've got a Sun Odyssey 319 which might be a little too small for comfortably crossing oceans, but we've got quite big plans in not so distant future. :-)

Yes, apologize for that. I hd a problem with Oskar's lapel mic and I tried to adjust for this during the editing process but never could get it exactly right.

Does it make me want a Jenneau to think it just dropped a rudder in the middle of the ocean?
@JeanneauAmerica

At first glance probably not! But no sailor goes to sea thinking that things will never break, they do of course. In this case the rudder post was eaten away by electrolysis caused by a loose wire in the binnacle. The important part of the story is first. how the owners, Oskar and Lisa dealt with the problem and second, that despite the fact that their boat was no longer in production, we were able to get a replacement rudder to them in relatively short order so they could continue their around the world adventure. All and all a very good outcome.

Well done Paul must have been wonderful to meet the crew of Hilma is such a magic location. Some excellent visuals and interview, but personally found that the sound quality was pretty mixed especially early on and at times the background music too distracting, but nonetheless an epic episode of a real adventure aboard a lovely Jeanneau.

Thanks Malcolm and thanks for your continued support of Jeanneau and the wonderful people who own them. Yes, I struggled with the audio a bit on this one. Most important thing however is the story of Hilma and her crew and the great adventure they're having. On we go!

What do you think Caused the Rudder to drop completely off / away and fall into the depths of the ocean.??
@JeanneauAmerica
4 жыл бұрын
It's a good question, thanks. What they found was that beneath one of the compasses a "hot"wire had come lose and was sending stray 12 volt electrical current down through the rudder quadrant and to the rudder shaft. Over time, the electrolysis eroded the rudder to a point it became so thin, it snapped. You can learn more about the specifics here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/tYKar36Ih59-YIo

Did they ever find out what happened to the rudder?
@paulfenn940
5 жыл бұрын
They did and thanks for asking. Turned out that a wire had come loose under the compass at one of the helm stations which was sending stray 12V current out through the rudder shaft. Over time, the diameter of the shaft was eroded by electrolysis until it eventually broke.
