This film, produced in 1954, takes you inside the political headquarters of NATO to understand how the newly created international organisation functions.
While NATO’s “vast protective shield” stretches from North America to Turkey, and from the Arctic Circle to the Aegean, representatives from 15 member countries work together at NATO HQ, at the Palais de Chaillot, Paris, to make this happen.
At that heart of the process, the North Atlantic Council, with at its helm the NATO Secretary General. To translate policy into action, committees work on specific issues and projects, as is the case of the Infrastructure Committee, shown in this film as an illustration of how the 15 member countries work together on a daily basis.
In sum, “Around this table” seeks to explain the political aspect of the Atlantic Alliance and the work of its civilian staff. It complements the film “Alliance for Peace” (first produced in 1951), which focused more on the military aspects of the organisation. “Around this table” was shown to groups visiting NATO Headquarters, to military personnel and to audiences in member countries.
