Lots of fun but it's a bit hot to be doing anything! It's been a while since I had a studio with natural light. The things I had to do to light my other studio and try to make it look nicer on camera! This one will be easier to light, harder to dampen the sound. There is always something logistically difficult!

Thank you! I love how they look and it's very enticing to choose my next palette from them. I found this difficult to do though, so I hope the video helps any trying to do the same.

This was timely for me, I’m struggling with organizing my pastel sticks and pencils for the most efficient accessibility and space while I’m working on a piece. I did not have an issue until I increased the size of my project. Thank you, for sharing.😊

Yes it's not as easy as it looks when you start. I had a plan and then changed it and then changed it again! It's hard to know where to start. But I definitely recommend doing it as a way to see all your colours. It doesn't really matter how you order them, as long as it works with the way you think. I was tempted to keep all my lights and darks in separate trays. But in the end decided the spectrum looked nicer. Just go for it!

Hello Emma, your new studio looks so spacious, your pastels look beautiful set out. I've been tempted to try that with my little selection.

You really should! Even if it's only a small box that you're organising, it's a valuable lesson to see what colours you actually have and use within the spectrum.

I love that you have a shiny new studio with more space and organized your pastel collection in a form that works better for you. I did have a question: how do you know which color from which brand you’re using when they’re all together like that? Both to reorder when they run out and to reference in your tutorials.

Hullo Emma, I am amazed with your categorization of your sticks! You have some lovely colors! I do wonder if your mixing hardness' as well? I have trouble deciding on my stick placement in my small travel boxes. Getting that range of colors ready for use is so hard! I know that there are many envious hearts out here watching your beautiful studio space! I am excited for you and wish you only the very best ! I am looking forward to your future videos in this new glorious space! I think you may need to hang some art to help with the echo, but I am sure you have a few pieces to help with that problem! I know rugs are difficult to keep clean, but can save a dropped stick if it hits easily and dampen sounds too! Stay cool and please keep those videos coming.

Thank you! I don't have that many hard pastels to be honest. Mostly some darker colours and my lighter colours I prefer the soft pastels. I don't work like a lot of artists who work their way up from hard sticks. I get the value of it, it's just not how I found my way. So I have very few hard pastels to mix in and I'll probably keep them separate. As for the bouncy walls! I've just moved in and it's such a bouncy room! It will get filled with stuff though, including rugs to catch pastels haha. I might put up a few wall hangings as well and see if I can really dampen it. There's always something that isn't quite workable, but there's always a way around!

It is amazing you fit all your pastels except your black so perfectly into those 3 trays. They are great size trays - do you have a link to where to buy trays like this?
@EmmaColbertArt
2 ай бұрын
Hi Kathy, that was the hardest part of doing this as I bought 6 trays and only needed 3! Plenty of room to expand haha. I don't have a link to these trays as they were literally bought in a local home store as normal wooden lap trays. I measured out what size I'd like for my tables and these seemed perfect. You can buy pastel trays but the only difference is they're a bit more shallow and without the handles normally. I quite like these and they were a lot cheaper too!

I tried that and I found it a nightmare because of all the all round trips. I am somehow relieved that you found it difficult as well to decide! :)) 😅

I did the same with my pastels the other year, but made 1 big tray with segments..i thought I had loads of pastels and was surprised how sparse it looks..But it does make the work flow better. And the amount of times I re-jiggled I cant count.

Yes I bought more trays than I needed so maybe I have to buy more pastels? haha! I'm glad it has condensed them though, it means I can look at them all together and have them close to hand while painting. I always had to pause the camera, get up and go get another colour if I needed to. Just trying to take all those annoying logistical efforts out of my work now!

Where does an artist find these trays?
@EmmaColbertArt

I bought these trays from a local home store. They're just wooden lap trays which you can also find on Amazon. You can buy wooden trays specifically for pastels, but I found these to be quite similar and cheaper too.

Thank you! Yes it's a very bouncy room, especially with so little in it at the moment. So I will definitely be making more videos while I get it set up and hopefully it will be a lot less bouncy when I'm done :-)

It’s aesthetically pleasing and I can see the value, but I also see that being annoying keeping up. I’ll stick to pan pastels and pencils, less messy to store 😅
@EmmaColbertArt
2 ай бұрын
That's true, both of those are a bit less messy. However if you clean your pastels after you use them, which takes about 2 minutes, then you don't have to do this very often. Especially if you put a cover over them while they're not in use. I just don't so they end up with dog and cat hair on them as well as general dust haha!

Did you mix oil and dry pastels? Hard and soft? Don’t they become dryer while uncovered?
@mjpete27
2 ай бұрын
Hullo, I know your waiting for Emma to reply, but you really cannot mix your oil and soft sticks. You can include your pan pastels and sticks in one tray and I have mixed my hard and soft in with medium harness sticks together as long as the colors were right, some do not.

Emma doesn't work with oil pastels. They are all soft pastels
@EmmaColbertArt

As others have mentioned I'm all soft pastel. I really like oil pastels but never work with them. I do believe if you leave them out in very dry conditions they might dry up a bit but I'm not an oil pastel expert at all. I also use predominantly soft pastels so don't have that many hard ones to mix in. Totally up to the artist if they mix those, but as long as they're not oil pastels it's fine to store them together.
