DP Oliver Maier tried out ARRI’s new Signature Zooms 16-32 mm and 24-75 mm while shooting the project “125 Years Carl Orff,” which he created on behalf of the Carl Orff Foundation with editor Jochen Kraus and art director Holger Geisler. The lenses were used to capture Martina La Ragione’s choreography of “UnHeaven,” based on the schoolwork of Carl Orff.
The shooting concept was:
- Low light, magic hour
- No makeup
- Natural skin tones
- A strong backlight (ARRI Orbiter) to test flare handling
Oliver Maier shares his impression of the Signature Zooms:
"I wanted to test the ARRI ALEXA Mini LF with the two Signature Zooms at T2.8 and 50 fps in a normal shooting situation. I was pleasantly surprised by the lenses' distortion-free image. No matter what focal length I set, the lines were straight, with no edge blur or vignetting. And yet on the control monitor the image didn't look technical or digital, but organic and attractive. Skin tones are soft, smooth, and cosmetic, but also vital and natural. The image shows a clarity. The feathers, the dust kicked up by the dancers, the small particles in the air - everything is very crisp. These two Signature Zooms harmonize and are very well matched, with no breathing and nice bokeh. For a project like this, a small, lightweight camera setup is important, so it helped that the Signature Zooms are short and light. The package of ALEXA Mini LF and Signature Zooms convinced me and I would use it not only for the next ballet film, but also with great pleasure for my next automotive shoot."
