Arrkula Yinbayarra (Yanyuwa for ‘Together We Sing’) is a group of strong cultural Songwomen led by Marlene Timothy from Borroloola, located in the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory. They use music as a powerful tool to strengthen culture for a younger generation and to revitalise the traditional languages of the Yanyuwa, Marra, Garrwa and Gudanji.
With encouragement from Marlene and mentoring from family member and acclaimed singer-songwriter Dr. Shellie Morris AO, the group formed to perform at Borroloola’s Malandarri Festival in 2022, singing songs about their history and contemporary social issues.
“The solution to our social issues is to keep our language and culture, and to be proud of who we are,” said the group.
For their first performance outside of their community, Arrkula Yinbayarra came together at the NT’s Daminmin Festival in July 2023. They were selected to participate at MusicNT’s Bush Band’s Summit and Bash in Alice Springs and will make their interstate debut at this year’s Woodford Folk Festival.
Arrkula Yinbayarra will be recording their debut album in October 2023.
