I actually really liked the take of giving Green Arrow such a gritty start, initially with a downward spiral, but as he grew, he slowly, but surely ascends into Superherodom. Like he literally starts as a playboy, gets isolated, becomes a killer out of necessity, makes some connections before returning home revenge fueled. The dude starts out like Batman, but then becomes an all round healthier person. He disproves Batman and other heroes who think they can't be happy. They must be solitary figures, blah, blah, blah. II was so invested in his hero journey of becoming the Green Arrow we know and love. It was even divided into phases. He's the criminal/ killer the Hood. Got to rebrand because the name was perverted by killers. He is the anti-hero/vigilante, the Arrow. And finally the Hero, Green Arrow. But executive meddling muddled it all up. They switched directors and went in a whole different direction so when he literally became Green Arrow, I felt nothing. I mean, Season 3 and 4 are bad, but I liked the concept and overall direction that season 3 needs to be Oliver's darkest hour/moments and season 4 overcorrecting his past behavior, but struggling to find balance. So season 5 becomes introspective with Oliver reflecting on all that has happened in the 5 years since he returned home. It's the same amount of time he spent on the island and has transformed just as much since then and has once again become something else. Someone else. The Green Arrow. (Immediately though, season 5 spat in the face of his development and returned to season 1's killer and said this is your hero, right! I am still mad about a lot of season 5 which made me drop the show, but I am not getting into it!)
@FreddyAndBessy
4 ай бұрын
I was so on-board with this response until the last paragraph you put haha. I love Season 5! I always interpreted Oliver’s return to killing as part of an addiction. He was able to conquer it for a while, but as soon as he did it once (Damian Darhk), it was easier to continue justifying it, leading to where he find him in Season 5. I agree with you on the introspection with the character, though! I love how we got to go to the core reason why Oliver began killing in the first place and seeing how that affected him in the present.
@JakeSmith-mq5dc
4 ай бұрын
@@FreddyAndBessy Oh, i didn't think of it like an addiction, I thought of it like they were desperately regressing the character and trying to course correct the show back into the grittiness that the show and character have LONG since outgrew. No one likes it when the main character regresses just for views. Ben 10 comes to mind. That is an interesting view I hadn't considered before. That's a good concept for the 5th season, him closing that chapter in his life by overcoming that killing addiction. (Admittedly, I barely remember season 5 now, so I can't really say much on that matter) Still hate how the show changed direction from the original plan they had set up and what it became because the directors had already told us what to expect and had us invested in that journey. Season 5 should've been when the comic book persona finally melded with the show's version. Where this Olver finally becomes fully recognizable as the Green Arrow we all know and love rather than the nicknamed Green Batman that critics call him.

Arrow is definitely my favorite Arrowverse show, but the campy/soap opera-ish did wear on me. I often wonder why live shows don't take the "villain of the week" approach that animated shows used. Where to start, first off thanks for the video. I always enjoy a good video that brings me back to when Arrow first kicked it all off. I wasn't as big of a DC fan before I started watching Arrow, so I'll always be thankful that Arrow was what brought me into that universe. As you mentioned the first 2 season really were amazing, especially when you consider that they were on CW. I wish that streaming was where it is now, back when Arrow started. The thought of getting a higher budget season with less limits is something I continue to wait for(outside of the few we've gotten featuring smaller characters like Peacemaker). Flash was another show that I fell in love with, but ended up having the same issues as later seasons went on. Looking back on both shows I remember being so excited as each new season premiered, only to get disappointed. I have a hard time understanding how you can start so strong, but continue to fumble the ball when there's tons of history that can be used if they ever ran out of ideas. When it comes down to it, there's so much that goes into making a show and I know that I personally couldn't do a better job. Both Stephen Amell, Grant Gustin and so many of the actors/actresses did a great job with what they were given and these shows will always hold a special place in my heart.

Great video bud! I truely loved S1&2 and if you had asked me "what was the best show on television?" I would have unironically answered "Arrow". As far as I'm concerned season three was the end of the "arrow trilogy". The writers all but threw their hands up and said "we are out of ideas" and LITERALLY had Ollie and Felicity drive off into the sunset.! All that was missing was ""THATS ALL FOLKS!" Honestly I was just happy to have any TV show that took a DC Superhero seriously and I watched until the bitter end. And by Bitter End I mean killing off the first hero and the namesake of the arrowverse OFF F'N SCREEN therefore doing the dirtiest of dirty to WB and our hero. BUT say what you will about Arrow, it had bright spots throughout every single season whether it was a character we've never seen or nod to DC lore it was fun and you could tell that the writers and its lead star (very rare)cared about the comics and cared about the fans.

I think it's too bad that Arrow have gotten hate that doesn't deserve,in the first place,during this years I saw a lot of superficiality, insults and comments with no argumentation,full of nostalgia and many times stupidity or hypocrisy and so on,I saw a really toxic audience,and second,we have to consider that Marvel was(and still is)the one in charge,with the greatest success,on the other side DCEU was so problematic and have gotten a lot of shit,then Netflix is the most popular steaming service in the world,and so on.I personally think that the only mistake was season 4,and fortunately the 5th fixed everything, then as its characters and situations the show evolved,the fact is,Arrow's journey was unreachable,incomparable,it changed me like I never would've expected and like nothing else did. Oliver's whole journey and evolution,everything he has been trough,lost, changed,faced,strugge with, defeated,who he was, who he became, what he became,and how,then the complexity into interpersonal relationships, conflicts,differences in methods or choices,forgiveness,mistakes and flaws,guilt,negative and bad sides, redemption,delicate trust, the subtle treatment of right and wrong,law,necessary or not necessary unorthodox approaches to fight the scum,or working together despite risks or issues,the greatly impacting motivation and perseverance,how greatly they explored the vigilante figure, all there's around it and its complications,how incredibly they connected the storytelling between past and present,the many symbols and messages,villains like Slade Wilson,Adrian Chase(or what about the freaking"Emerald Archer" documentary)are just few of the many things that makes this series and these characters so special, unic,real,extraordinary,SOMETHING ELSE,and the amazing music fits perfectly with all of it.

hey man @NERDY B4 IT WAS COOL just wanted to say I'm thankful for these vids you're putting out. These give great commentary and justice to shows I've enjoyed for quite a sizeable period of time. Great points too about Arrow being a so heavily based on Batman. Kinda similar with how Supergirl's Kara was kinda forced to be a girl Clark Kent. Love these shows and your vids help the community of fans stay active through these discussions. Cheers, man!

Your videos on the arrowverse are awesome! and I loved how you mention the "comic" version of Green arrow. I would BEG of you to PLEASE make more videos talking about the comic counterparts of Arroverse characters and where the shows got their "ideas" from. Like a rundown of how "Crisis on infinite earths" played out in the comics as suppose to the CW shows. Thanks!

A lot to unpack with arrow, Imo those who say it was only liked because we were all younger in the first few seasons and matured out of the show so that’s why we thought the later seasons were worse but it was really the same bad show the whole time is wrong imo. As a guy who can’t really watch movies or shows more than a couple of times before it gets boring and less likable to me, the second third and fourth times I watched arrow seasons 1 and 2, they were still solid imo. To me, after the first few times I watch something I can’t watch it too many times over before I start disliking it, so when I watched Arrow and flash for the first time (seasons 1 and 2 only) they were way better than the following times i rewatched them. However, both shows just fall off a cliff after their second seasons and are unwatchable to me. I’ve only rewatched a few episodes here and there once or twice from those shows because after watching them for the first times, I knew I didn’t have to watch them again to know they sucked. Looking back, both shows are just filled with tons of untapped potential. I wish arrow used the whole first season as Oliver working alone and narrating the episodes like he does for the first four of the show before diggle joins him. I love diggle (in seasons 1&2) but I thought Oliver alone was just so much better and more fun than whenever he had other people helping him (not as in going to ask lance for help once in a while, as in the whole “team arrow” bs). Another problem is obviously the amount of episodes and the time of each episode, as u can easily watch every episode in 15-25 minutes and skip many of the scenes because it’s just useless filler that doesn’t really change or impact the story. I did think the overall main story of s 1&2 were very good but I never liked how every season has to have a city or world wide stakes on the line. Doing that over and over just makes it feel less impactful and meaningful. It’s the same as anything else, the more it’s done, the less special it is. I didn’t like Sarah at all in s 2 and I thought Roy was misused in s 2 as well. I thought giving him the syrum was a mistake and he should’ve been just taken in and trained properly without dealing with that syrum, it was just unnecessary and didn’t develop his character well imo. Even in s 3, I just feel they didn’t really have Oliver and Roy form a strong connection and we really should’ve felt them as partners more. That all ties into the cw’s need to give every show a team tho. Which is why I thought Oliver should’ve been completely alone in s 1 and only have him and Roy in s 2 and beyond and maybe add in diggle a little bit. I also liked Tommy’s character and his development, as for the majority of s1 he was a mystery imo, we didn’t really know what side he was on or if he was somehow connected to the villain etc. He was kind of ruined with the whole laurel love triangle thing, but his friendship with Oliver and his character growth was good and I think he was missed in the later seasons. A mistake to kill him off imo. I also think they played with Oliver’s identity being discovered far too many times, and didn’t give Oliver enough time as the man running his company. I always thought the episodes where Oliver was working with lance on the dl was way better than the cops being after him all the time. They shows need to create conflicts between characters was also annoying, as I thought it would’ve been cool to see the Oliver Roy vs the world dynamic and yes they should have the occasional disagreement, but having arguments that don’t actually impact the story and are resolved the same episode are just unnecessary. Their moral principles could’ve been in conflict once and a while as that’s human nature, but the show never lets us see them be successful imo. It always feels like there’s never really a victory until the season finale. I thought that Oliver was a much more fun character in s1 then every other season because he’s just locked in 100% and has a specific purpose and after that so much outside shit just changes him and pulls him away from what he used to be and it’s less fun. I thought the mythical set up he had for most of s 1 was much more fun than all the rest of the show, where he is always hiding in the dark and trying to avoid being seen by everyone. And I would’ve accepted him not being like that anymore if he was actually working with the police full time and they backed him, but they didn’t so his willingness to be out in the open more and be seen by anyone and everyone just made no sense. I’m not even gonna talk about the other seasons because to me they’re just bad in every possible aspect.

Well I actually remember the "green arrow stole Batemans villains" argument started with deathstroke and this still happens today because a lot of batman fans forget deathstroke is not one of batmans villains he is a teen titans villain the complaints came in HARD with ras which yea absolutely ra's is like mostly batman very rarely fighting other heroes

I kinda buy Oliver's brooding personality in Arrow, his experience on the Island, with Argus, that would leave one with a severe case of PTSD, so much so that being the jokey guy would be a mask. And I'll admit it, I would have rather they had hired Marie Avgeropoulos from the 100, and cast her as Helena Wayne from Earth 2 who got left on Earth Prime after Crisis.

Great video! Big fan of the Arrow show. I didn’t even know the show existed but once I found out, I binge watched the first two seasons on Netflix. Batman being my favorite superhero, I wasn’t too mad about the obvious comparisons when the story of the show was done well. I loved seasons 1, 2, 5 and liked 3, 8 but all the other seasons really fell flat to me. It definitely has it flaws, like every CW show it seems. After the show ended, I lost interest in the other Arrow-verse shows, except for seasonal crossovers (which latest Flash Armageddon was very underwhelming) and occasionally watching Legends.

If I could offer a counter point to your critique about the comic book portion. Oliver was darker in the 80’s during the Mike grell run so arrow was definitely taking inspiration from that run.

Seasons 1, 2, 5, and start on 7 (until he got out of prison) were actually quite good. Season 6 made me give up on Arrow for a while though. I got through approx. half of the season. The episode where they had the big fight in the woods with OGs vs. "noob team" where Wild dog goes at Oliver with a hatchet and gets hiss ass handed to him so bad that he ends up in hospital and then Dinah gets in Oliver's face that it's his fault was the pinnacle of stupidity. Only good thing about season 4 was Matt Ryan as Constantine.

You should do a video-essay about Legends of Tomorrow; I think now it is one of the best shows of the arroverse by focusing on being funny and orginal , even the soap opera stuff are presented in a funny way so that it isn´t as annoying like in other shows.

I broke off with this early into season 4. One of the things that bothered me the most was how every supporting character was turned into a superhero. I could suspend my disbelief and accept a billionair playboy training for years and becoming a badass super ninja - but then, his sister? Her boyfriend? His ex-girlfriend? His DEAD girlfriend?! This is just a sign of a writers' room that is all out of ideas.

A large problem is that American shows gotta take any concept and stretch it to the max. So a show, especially a comic driven one, that could be done in a tight 10/11 episode per season, gets dragged out to 20+. Anime uses their filler to at least throw in some funny episodes or gags. But with broadcast tv, that filler gets turned into an extra dozen unnecessary episodes of will they won’t they, or your ex girlfriend dying at sea who turns out to be alive who dies again after you banged her after you cheated on her sister again who also dies but comes back as a evil doppelgänger who you would bang but can’t because of her unresolved daddy issues which gets him killed before she too also dies again as well 🤦🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️

You nailed it, Arrow Season 1&2 were so good. It's the same with the Flash season 1 and 2. For me it was even harder in Arrow Season 3, seeing Stephen Amell trying his best to sell the whole league of assasins plot but it was just so convoluted, that it made no sense in the end. I also think season 4 wasn't as bad, but the change in tone and off-putting visuals (idk man season 4 just had a weird vibe :D) of this season really threw my expectations for season 5 into the gutter.. But god damn season 5 felt so good again, an awesome villain, better executed characters, way better dialogue and so on. It felt like the show I felt in love with again. And I still don't know what to think about season 6&7. They were interesting and 7 made a decent job to introduce season 8 as the series finale. Season 8 was also so cool, and like you said, it felt like a farewell from Stephen, who kinda looked bored in season 7 sometimes. I was glad that they decided to keep the finale shorter and don't fill the season with useless nonsense. Arrow was a good one. Thank you for your honest portrait of the show, one can tell you love the show and the characters. It's greatly appreciated.

My biggest issue was them basically dropping the list, like sure you should have had the side quest here and there but that should have been the focus. Also abandoning the Arrow and Canary relationship makes season one almost a separate universe
