I remember checking out this book several times in elementary school during the 90's. I'm 23 now, but I just could not remember the name, author or specifics of the plot after over a decade since last reading it as a small child. After a Google search knowing no more than its Native American basing, geometric design, and a vague plot about a child "proving" himself, I finally found it after all these years! I didn't even know it was a movie or how old the book really was! Thank you so much!!!!

I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR THIS FOR OVER 20 YEARS. This is quite possibly the earliest picture book I can remember, and it was from my school library when I was in kindergarten. You could find most of the books you wanted, but this book right here was just about the most sought after. 9 times out of 10, you would not find this one on the shelf because every kid wanted to get their hands on it. Those 1/10 times where I did manage to grab this book, I made the most out of it each time. I am so happy that I managed to finally figure out the name of this wonderful story. The fact that I can remember how most of the story goes is a testament to its wonderful storytelling.

Like most of you, I read this as a youth in the early eighties. It was my favorite book as a kid, and was lost during one of the many moves we had as a family. Fast forward forty some years, and this is now my 2yr olds favorite book. I had never seen this film until today, and am shocked that a film exists. @islandcrime, thank you to you and your girlfriend for hunting down the 16mm, digitally transferring it, making it assessible to the world via YT, introducing it to a new generation, and reviving fond memories for so many. ✌🏽

I was looking for this earlier this year. This was my favorite book as a child. I used to read it at my school, Tribal American Consulting Corporation in the 70's. I still talk about the book to this day when explaining the trials that a person may have to go through in life in order to become something wonderful. Thank you for uploading and sharing this cherished memory.

I remember both the striking and beautiful book and film from my childhood, so I was disappointed after a bit of Googling that it's not an authentic retelling of a Pueblo story and doesn't accurately represent Pueblo culture. :(
@VinlandAlchemist

Perhaps not accurately, as it was written by a non-native who was full of inspired ideas, but it is apparently based on an actual Acoma tale. Whether more accurate or more inaccurate though, is anyone's guess...

A fabulous pueblo tale. I remember when I was in the first grade or so about 35 years ago, my homeroom class went to the library and the librarian read this to us. I was mesmerized and asked my mother to buy the book for me. All of these years I've kept it, but never knew it was originally a short film until now.

i only first read the "children's" book recently- i'm 34 yrs old. to me personally the story is extremely profound- it further relates for me native americanism to my mormon christianity. mcdermott's telling of it is stunning, beautiful. i have read it repeatedly w/ my children; without my prompting, they also compare the son to Jesus Christ. to watch this film now, i am further amazed by mcdermott's art.

I saw this on public television when I was a small boy in the mid '70s... sometime in the late '90s/early '00s, my son told me about reading a book in school by the same name, and I'd told him about this film - I'd remembered the melody ever since (especially from about 10:47 in this video), and had played it for him then on a flute I had made... I've been hunting for it all over the 'net for years to no avail, and took a break from the hunt a while back - now I find it here and can finally show my son!! THANK YOU!! ^_^
