Pilots who flew with the aid of the Transcontinental Airway system, such as Charles Lindbergh, in the early days of aviation from the 1920s to the 1940s, could deliver air mail by navigating with concrete arrows pointing in the direction of the next beacon and or arrow. Prior to the advent of lighted airways, flight during the nighttime was not safe and nearly impossible. Routes formed by lighted beacons and concrete arrows across America made the transportation of mail faster than trains by allowing aircraft to safely fly at night.
Flying by lighted airways and painted arrows is now possible in Microsoft Flight Simulator thanks to the add-on "Arrows Across America" which is available for free at www.flightsim.to
