Those days of listening to him overnight are gone, those nights with the black skies and the stars Art Bell and Coast To Coast AM are over. That was before social media, before smart phones.

A BIG thanks to YOU sir... for getting me trough so many late night shifts. You brought so many wonderous thoughts of joy into my world, as my mind ran wild with all your great stories. I wish I could have had an hour of your time... I always had so many questions. farewell...where ever you are now Art... You were a gift... to the people of the night.

Thank you for this tribute to Art Bell. I used to listen to Art on the Amateur frequency 3840.0 when I lived in Northern Arizona. Southern NV was close to Arizona, plus Art's exceptional equipment and antennas made him sound like he was next door. He had a small group of folks who would meet up with him on that frequency late at night. Even truckers with Amateur licenses would call in. Most were in NV, AZ or CA. I would listen to him for hours talk about various subjects with the group. It was like a mini version of Coast to Coast but with subjects like new military aircraft coming out or new Amateur Radio equipment he had tried out or movies etc. If you called him on the frequency, he would answer and be SO very polite and professional. He never made anyone feel uninvited. Even when people would come on the frequency and be stupidly rude, he would handle it like a professional. Never rude or mean to anyone. I worked at an isolated communications site in the mid 90's. I worked mid-shifts and alone. I would tune one of the HF receivers to Art's radio broadcast. It really made the night pass by and filled it with an eerie, otherworldly atmosphere. Art is/was old school Amateur and Broadcast Radio -- a gentleman. The kind I remember from long ago who introduced me to radio. It is very sad to me that he has passed on. Knowing he was in the world and on the radio was comforting to me, like when WLO, WCC and KPH were on the shortwave radio. This video shows Art within a few hours before his passing. He smiles, waves and gives the peace sign. That's how I will always remember Art. On a final note: a door has closed with Art's passing. One that will never open again. 73 es BCNU Art.
